Study of microcirculation in oral lichen planus by video-capillaroscopy.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate “in vivo” the oral microcirculatory characteristics in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and to discover any differences in microcirculation in comparison with healthy patients. Study design Twenty patients with established diagnosis of OLP and 20 healthy patients were examined in our laboratory by means of contact optical probe videocapillaroscopy. The examined areas for each patient were the right and the left buccal mucosae. Chromophobe cell renal carcinoma and its variants--a report on 32 cases.

This paper reports on 32 chromophobe cell renal carcinomas observed in 697 renal cell cancers (RCC) of adults (peak in the sixth decade of life). The chromophobe cell-type differs from other types of RCC macroscopically, the cut-surface being predominantly of grey-beige colour. Histologically, there are two variants: one is the typical (light) variant (n = 22) and the other is eosinophilic (n = 10). Both variants have in common (a) reaction of the cytoplasm with Hale's acid iron colloid; (b) electron microscopic detection of cytoplasmic microvesicles (150-300 nm), frequently with 'inner vesicles', and (c) low glycogen content in comparison with the clear cell carcinoma. In vivo molecular imaging of gastric cancer by targeting MG7 antigen with confocal laser endomicroscopy.

Background and study aims: In vivo molecular imaging represents a powerful tool for the immediate diagnosis of gastric cancer. In this study, the monoclonal antibody MG7, which is a specific molecular marker against gastric cancer, was labeled with fluorescent agents to enable in vivo real-time imaging by confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE). Fluorescence Microscopy as a Diagnostic Tool for Dermatophytosis.

Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissues. Dermatophytes can cause discomfort but are not usually life threatening. However, the infection can spread and may lead to systemic fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. Currently available diagnostic methods include potassium hydroxide (KOH) testing and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. However, most diagnostic techniques cannot be performed rapidly; days to weeks may be required for conclusive results. Microvascular injury and repair in acute human bacterial pyelonephritis.

Acute inflammatory cell-capillary endothelial cell interactions, related to injury and repair, were investigated light and electron microscopically in acute human bacterial pyelonephritis. In inflammatory infiltrate-adjacent microvessels, the small capillaries were completely occluded by leukocyte plugs and the large capillaries were densely filled with acute inflammatory cells adhering to the endothelium. Hepatitis A-like non-A, non-B hepatitis: light and electron microscopic observations of three cases.

To date, three types of NANBH have been distinguished by epidemiological, clinical and experimental data. We examined the liver biopsies of three patients with an acute NANBH resembling hepatitis A from the infection route, incubation period and clinical course. The liver biopsies revealed lesions with a portal and periportal predominance, thus also exhibiting parallels with hepatitis A on the histopathological level.

Immunohistological and immunoelectron microscopic identification of TNF alpha in normal human and murine epidermis.

The presence, distribution and cellular localization of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) were investigated in normal human and murine epidermis using immunohistological and immunoelectron microscopic methods with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. The immunostaining revealed an intercellular plasma membrane and cytoplasmic labelling of the epidermal keratinocytes, but no labelling of Langerhans cells, melanocytes and Merkel cells. Large amounts of TNF alpha were regularly found in the sebaceous glands. These findings demonstrate that epidermal keratinocytes and especially sebocytes produce and release TNF alpha and that this keratinocyte-derived cytokine may be important for the …

Functional, biochemical and morphological studies on human bronchi after cryopreservation

1. Human isolated bronchi have been investigated as fresh tissue or after storage (7 and 30 days) at -196 degrees C in foetal calf serum containing 1.8 M dimethyl sulphoxide. 2. After cryopreservation, the maximal contractile response to acetylcholine (3 mM) was reduced (approximately 25%) but the difference did not reach significance statistically. Maximal responses to other spasmogens tested (histamine, [Nle10]NKA(4-10), bradykinin, leukotriene D4, U46619, and KCl) did not differ between unfrozen and frozen/thawed tissues.
