Haven on Earth? Dynamic Connections between Gold and Stock Markets in Turbulent Times

2017

We find that exogenous structural shocks caused by terrorist attacks, wars, political turmoil and gold market specific events have a strong role to play in the analysis of dynamic relationships between gold and stock market returns. Our main finding is that the interaction between the gold market and stock market is much tighter than previously observed. Especially some of the gold market specific shocks have long lasting impacts also on the financial markets. Also some events, which may have been miss-interpreted as minor shocks previously, have in fact had significant impacts on both stock and gold markets. Furthermore, the dynamic correlations between all the analyzed financial sectors i…

The effectiveness of several market integration measures when facing a market turmoil

2003

Many market integration measures are operationalized to compute their numerical values during a period characterized by the lack of stability and market turmoil. The results of the tests give their degree of effectiveness, and reveal that the measures based on the principles of asset valuation, versus statistical measures, more clearly yield the level of integration of financial markets. Besides, cross market arbitrage-linked measures and equilibrium models-linked measures provide complementary information and reflect different properties, and consequently, both types of measures may be useful in practice.

Trading activity and price impact in parallel markets: SETS vs. off-book market at the London Stock Exchange

2011

We empirically study the trading activity in the electronic on-book segment and in the dealership off-book segment of the London Stock Exchange, investigating separately the trading of active market members and of other market participants which are non-members. We find that (i) the volume distribution of off-book transactions has a significantly fatter tail than the one of on-book transactions, (ii) groups of members and non-members can be classified in categories according to their trading profile (iii) there is a strong anticorrelation between the daily inventory variation of a market member due to the on-book market transactions and inventory variation due to the off-book market transac…

High-Frequency Data

2010

We introduce some of the most common types of high-frequency financial data: tick-by-tick data, trade and quote data, order book data, and market member data. We describe the types of variables that are usually available in the most popular high-frequency financial databases. We discuss the issues related to the handling of these data, including cleaning protocols, timing issues, and issues related to data size. We then briefly consider the issues related to the stylized facts detected in the empirical analysis of high-frequency data. Specifically, we consider (i) the irregular temporal spacing of the events at high frequency and its relevance for the econometric modeling of financial varia…

Correlation between milling parameters and microstructure characteristics of nanocrystalline copper powder prepared via a high energy planetary ball …

2007

The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. It is shown that the change of microstructure characteristics of as-milled Cu powder versus the ball milling conditions (under constant time of the ball milling) depend on only some energy parameters of the milling, for example, average size of crystallite is uniquely defined by energy of the shock, whereas the portion of edge and screw compo…

Droplet cell investigation of intergranular corrosion on AA2024

2017

An original method combining a droplet cell with direct optical interrogation of the reverse side of a 50μm thick foil AA2024 has been tested to evaluate the possible analysis of the current during intergranular corrosion tests. The foil microstructure and the selected orientation were suitable for recording the current generated during the propagation in volume of a well-defined grain boundary trace. Even if it is impossible to reach a charge and mass balance from these preliminary attempts, it was demonstrated that it is possible, despite hydrogen evolution, to record a current transient resulting from the full penetration of an intergranular path. Keywords: Intergranular corrosion, Alumi…

2020

For medical application, easily accessible biomaterials with tailored properties are desirable. Collagen type I represents a biomaterial of choice for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Here, we present a simple method to modify the properties of collagen and to generate collagen laminates. We selected three commercially available collagen sheets with different thicknesses and densities and examined the effect of rose bengal and green light collagen crosslinking (RGX) on properties such as microstructure, swelling degree, mechanical stability, cell compatibility and drug release. The highest impact of RGX was measured for Atelocollagen, for which the swelling degree was reduced f…

Microstructure Design for Fast Lifetime Measurements of Magnetic Tunneling Junctions

2019

The estimation of the reliability of magnetic field sensors against failure is a critical point concerning their application for industrial purposes. Due to the physical stochastic nature of the failure events, this can only be done by means of a statistical approach which is extremely time consuming and prevents a continuous observation of the production. Here, we present a novel microstructure design for a parallel measurement of the lifetime characteristics of a sensor population. By making use of two alternative designs and the Weibull statistical distribution function, we are able to measure the lifetime characteristics of a CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunneling junction population. The main param…

Microstructure and magnetic properties of colloidal cobalt nano-clusters

2010

The magnetic response of nanometer sized Co nanoparticles (NP) prepared using reverse micelle solutions are presented. The use of complementary structural and morphological probes (like transmission electron microscopy, high resolution electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy) allowed to relate the magnetic properties to the size, morphology, composition and atomic structure of the nanoparticles. All data agree on the presence of a coreshell structure of NPs made of a metallic Co core surrounded by a thin Co-oxide layer. The coreshell microstructure of NPs affects its magnetic response mainly raising the anisotropy constant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Influence of Morphological Aspects in the Reaction Pathway and Superconductive Properties of Bi2223-Ca2CuO3 Ceramic Composites

1994

ABSTRACTA variation of the solid-state matrix technique has been developed as a procedure for the preparation of 2223 bismuth superconducting phases [(Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca1-nCunO4+2n, n=3]. The adequate processing of samples of nominal compositions 2223+x 0021, obtained both by this procedure and by the polymer matrix method, has allowed the modification of the microstructure of the calcium copper excess, with no noticeable change in that of the 2223 grains. The study of the phase evolution in the processing of the samples has shown that the formation rate of the 2223 phase is faster when the particle size of the calcium cuprate is smaller. A dependence of the intergranular superconducting properti…
