Pectin biopolymer mechanics and microstructure associated with polysaccharide phase transitions.
2019
Polysaccharide polymers like pectin can demonstrate striking and reversible changes in their physical properties depending upon relatively small changes in water content. Recent interest in using pectin polysaccharides as mesothelial sealants suggests that water content, rather than nonphysiologic changes in temperature, may be a practical approach to optimize the physical properties of the pectin biopolymers. Here, we used humidified environments to manipulate the water content of dispersed solution of pectins with a high degree of methyl esterification (high-methoxyl pectin; HMP). The gel phase transition was identified by a nonlinear increase in compression resistance at a water content …
The structural and dielectric properties of the Na0.96Li0.04NbO3ceramics
2007
Ceramic samples Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 were obtained using ceramic technology. The phase and structural analysis, the microstructure, EDS and EPMA, dielectric and hysteresis loops measurements have been performed. The dielectric and hysteresis loops measurements of Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 have been carried out. The dielectric measurements were performed both without and under axial pressure up to 120 MPa. It was shown that Na0.96Li0.04NbO3 ceramics have orthorhombic symmetry at room temperature and undergo a first order phase transition at a temperature of about 570 K. The axial pressure shifts the phase transition temperature and decreases the hysteresis in field-polarisation and field-strain dependenc…
Influence of BaTiO<inf>3</inf> on synthesis and structure of lead-free ceramics based on KNN
2012
In the present work lead-free compositions with a stoichiometric formula (1−x)(K 0.5 Na 0.5 )Nb 1−y Sb y O 3 -xBaTiO 3 (x=0.01, 0.02, 0.04; y=0.04, 0.07) were produced by solid state sintering method. Manganese oxide MnO 2 was used as a dopant in order to lower the sintering temperatures. The influence of BaTiO 3 on the microstructure, density, mechanical and electrical properties of Sb-substituted KNN ceramics was investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis revieled pure perovskite structure. Microstructural investigation of the ceramics samples showed homogeneous structure with a slightly rounded cubical grain shape. Phase transition temperature T c is shifted to lower temperatures in compar…
Dielectric Properties of Na0.5K0.5(Nb1-xSbx)O3+MnO2 Ceramics (x = 0.04, 0.05 and 0.06)
2011
Lead-free ceramics Na0.5K0.5(Nb1-xSbx)O3+0.5mol%MnO2 (x = 0.04, 0.05 and 0.06) were prepared by conventional sintering and hot pressing process; their microstructure and dielectric properties have been studied. It is found that increase of sintering temperature promotes the obtaining highly dense microstructure and increase in grain size while doping with Sb contributes to more dense and homogeneous microstructure and smaller grain size. Low frequency (100 Hz-200 kHz) investigations revealed the diffuse phase transitions. It can be concluded from experimental results that Sb doping improves dielectric properties. The obtained materials are expected to be promising candidates for lead-free e…
Microstructure, calorimetric and dielectric investigation of hafnium doped barium titanate ceramics
2013
Ferroelectric properties of BaTi1− x Hf x O3 ceramics with Hf content x = 0, 0.001, and 0.025 were examined. It was found that the substitution of Hf4+ for Ti4+ in BaTiO3 resulted in shifting the two low-temperature transitions (T 1, T 2) of the investigated samples to higher temperatures and decreasing the tetragonal-cubic phase transition temperature (T c). This is a well-known pinching effect. Thermal parameters of the transitions, such as the enthalpy ΔH and the entropy ΔS, were also estimated and discussed.
Enhanced UV emission from ZnO nanoflowers synthesized by the hydrothermal process
2012
ZnO nanoflowers were synthesized by the hydrothermal process at an optimized growth temperature of 200 °C and a growth/reaction time of 3 h. As-prepared ZnO nanoflowers were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV–visible and Raman spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and Raman studies reveal that the as-synthesized flower-like ZnO nanostructures are highly crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase preferentially oriented along the plane. The average length (234–347 nm) and diameter (77–106 nm) of the nanorods constituting the flower-like structure are estimated using scanning electron microscopy studies. The band gap of ZnO nanoflowers is estimated as 3.23 eV, the…
Structure, nanohardness and photoluminescence of ZnO ceramics based on nanopowders
2015
ZnO ceramics obtained from grained powders with different grain size by hot pressing and ceramics from tetrapods nanopowders obtained by press-less sintering have been investigated under identical conditions. Ceramics obtained by hot pressing were optically transparent but were composed of large inhomogeneous grains (d = 8–35 μm) exhibiting a substructure. Decreased values of elastic modulus within a grain and a wide defect-associated ('green') photoluminescence (PL) band at 2.2–2.8 eV in conjunction with a weak excitonic band indicate a high concentration of residual point defects in hot pressed ZnO ceramics. Utilization of more small-grained powders contributes to the formation of more un…
VIS-UV ZnCdO/ZnO multiple quantum well nanowires and the quantification of Cd diffusion.
2014
International audience; We report on the growth and microstructure analysis of high Cd content ZnCdO/ZnO multiple quantum wells (MQW) within a nanowire. Heterostructures consisting of ten wells with widths from 0.7 to 10nm are demonstrated, and show photoluminescence emissions ranging from 3.03 to 1.97eV. The wells with thicknesses⩽2nm have high radiative efficiencies compared to the thickest ones, consistent with the presence of quantum confinement. However, a nanometric analysis of the Cd profile along the heterostructures shows the presence of Cd diffusion from the ZnCdO well to the ZnO barrier. This phenomenon modifies the band structure and the optical properties of the heterostructure, an…
Modeling spectral correlations of photon-pairs generated in liquid-filled photonic crystal fiber
2020
The generation of photon-pairs with controllable spectral correlations is crucial in quantum photonics. Here we present the design of a photonic crystal fiber to generate widely-spaced four-wave mixing bands with spectral correlations that can be tuned through the thermo-optic effect after being infiltrated with heavy water. We present a theoretical study of the purity of the signal (idler) photon generated as a function of temperature, pump spectral linewidth and the length of the fiber. 511-6/18-8876 CIIC155/2019 APN-624 TEC2016- 76664-C2-1-R PROMETEO/2019/048
Diffusive behavior and the modeling of characteristic times in limit order executions
2007
We present an empirical study of the first passage time (FPT) of order book prices needed to observe a prescribed price change Delta, the time to fill (TTF) for executed limit orders and the time to cancel (TTC) for canceled ones in a double auction market. We find that the distribution of all three quantities decays asymptotically as a power law, but that of FPT has significantly fatter tails than that of TTF. Thus a simple first passage time model cannot account for the observed TTF of limit orders. We propose that the origin of this difference is the presence of cancellations. We outline a simple model, which assumes that prices are characterized by the empirically observed distribution …
