A prior study of different sample pre-treatments for the determination of metallic elements in complete diet feeds was performed in order to choose the most suitable for these samples. The studied pre-treatment were: acid extraction (lixiviation), wet digestion (on microwave oven) and dry ashing mineralization (calcination). Lixiviation (acid extraction) with hydrochloric acid was selected due to its accuracy, fast and simple pre-treatment procedure. An on-line automated flow injection system with microwave-assisted sample digestion was used to perform silicate rock dissolution in acid medium for iron determination. For this purpose, a continuous flow system was built up by using an automatic flow injection analysis (FIA) system coupled to a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS), including a focused microwave oven unit. The purpose of this work is two-fold: first, we successfully validate our open-source tool EOF-Library, which efficiently couples Elmer FEM and OpenFOAM, against COMSOL Multiphysics, a commercial simulation package; second, we inform about significant discrepancies between our results and the experimental and simulation data found in a series of research papers. Efficient microwave-mediated synthesis of fullerene acceptors for organic photovoltaics

Two different processes, namely the Bamford–Stevens and [4 + 2] Diels Alder reactions, have been optimized under microwave irradiation for the functionalization of fullerenes. In this manner, all the main C60- and C70-based acceptor derivatives for organic solar cells such as PCBM, DPM, BHN and ICBA, have been prepared in higher yields and shorter reaction times with respect to the reported data. These findings represent a step forward toward the wide production of cheaper organic solar cells as a consequence of the cost abatement of the acceptors given by higher yields, lower waste production, and reduced reaction time which means a strong energy saving.

Very often, chemical transformations require tedious and long procedures, which, sometimes, can be avoided using alternative methods and media. New protocols, enabling us to save time and solvents, allow us also to explore new reaction profiles. This Tutorial Review focuses on the physical and chemical behavior of carbon nanoforms, CNFs (fullerenes, nanotubes, nanohorns, graphene, etc.) when non-conventional methods and techniques, such as microwave irradiation, mechano-chemistry or highly ionizing radiations are employed. In addition, the reactivity of CNFs in non-conventional media such as water, fluorinated solvents, supercritical fluids, or ionic liquids is also discussed.
Growth of paramagnetic defects by gamma rays irradiation in oxygen-deficient silica

Abstract We report an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of gamma rays irradiation effects on an oxygen-deficient silica obtained from fused quartz. We have found that three types of E′ centers, E α ′ , E γ ′ and E δ ′ , and a paramagnetic defect in a spin triplet state (S = 1) are induced. The EPR signals dependence on the microwave power have been investigated. The concentrations of these centers as a function of gamma ray irradiation show that for high dose a limit value is reached suggesting a generation process from precursors.

Abstract With the current remote sensing technology developments, and in particular those at L-band (1.2–1.4 GHz) frequencies such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity and the Soil Moisture Active and Passive missions, new approaches concerning passive microwave and its combination with existing optical technologies have become of special interest for the estimation of surface soil moisture.
