GRAPHENE-BASED TRANSISTORS AND DETECTORS: FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION

Carbon and carbon-based systems have always attracted great attention thanks to the almost unlimited different structures they can be arranged in and the equally varied physical properties they own. These characteristics are mainly related to the flexibility of carbon bonding, which makes carbon an extremely versatile “building block” material. Most of the typical properties of each carbon-based system are mainly associated with the dimensionality of the structure itself. In this framework, graphene, the first two-dimensional atomic crystal available to the scientific community, has revealed to play a key role in terms of fundamental physics and potential applications, despite its short sto…

MICROWAVE-ASSISTED FUNCTIONALIZATION OF HALLOYSITE NANOTUBE SURFACE

2014

Halloysite, Al2Si2O5·2H2O, is a naturally occurring two-layered alluminosilicate, chemically similar to kaolin, which has a predominantly high-aspect-ratio hollow tubular structure in the submicrometer range and an internal diameter in the nanometer range. The size of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), generally varies from 50 to 70 nm in external diameter, ca. 15 nm diameter lumen, and 0.5 to 1 μm in length. Halloysite tubes have aluminol (Al-OH) groups on the internal surface and siloxan groups (Si-O-Si) on the external surface. The very large diameter of the halloysite lumen makes it potentially suitable for the accommodation of a range of guests. In recent reports, for example, the mesoporous…

GREEN CONDITIONS FOR THE SUZUKI REACTIONS BY USING MICROWAVE IRRADIATION AND MODIFIED HALLOYSITE/Pd CATALYST

2014

Halloysite nanotube (HNT) is an emerging biocompatible material with appealing perspective for technological applications, such as in catalysis1 and in pharmaceutical research.2 Halloysite is a double-layered aluminosilicate mineral that has a predominantly hollow tubular structure. The functionalization of HNTs is a good strategy to introduce an organic moiety onto the external surface and, therefore, to obtain innovative catalyst supports.3 We have modified the external surface of halloysite nanotube with octylimidazolium moieties (HNT-IL) by microwave irradiation in solvent-free conditions and we have have employed this material as support catalyst of Pd nanoparticles. The new HNT/Pd cat…

Simple two-step synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted pyrroles and 3,5-disubstituted pyrrole-2-carbonitriles from enones

2014

The cyclocondensation of enones with aminoacetonitrile furnishes 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrrole-2-carbonitriles which can be readily converted to 2,4-disubstituted pyrroles by microwave-induced dehydrocyanation. Alternatively, oxidation of the intermediates produces 3,5-disubstituted pyrrole-2-carbonitriles.

Review of Particle Physics

2020

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, …

Synthetic approach to the design of wide-band microwave injection-locked amplifiers

2010

In this work, a synthesis-based approach to the realization of wide-band microwave injection-locked amplifiers (ILA) is proposed. To this purpose, a transmission-type topology is combined with a feedback structure in which the "core ILA" is intentionally separated from the output (power) amplifier. A modular, matched, design of individual building blocks of the core ILA is then adopted, which allows their first-approximation exact modeling in the dynamical complex-envelope domain, following the theory earlier developed by Calandra-Sommariva. On this basis, analytic expressions for the main operating characteristics of the ILA (such as the locking bandwidth under small signal operation) are …

Approach to the Design of Transmission-Type Injection-Locked Microwave Oscillators through Behavioral Block Modeling

2010

In this work, an attempt is made toward the development of a systematic design method for the performance- driven dimensioning of the various elements comprising the structure of modern transistor-based microwave injection- locked oscillators with transmission-type topologies (TILOs). The proposed approach is based on the use of appropriate diakoptics of the various circuit blocks into a matched environment, and their behavioral modeling in the fundamental- frequency dynamical complex envelope domain with the help of standard circuit and E.M. simulation CAD tools. This will permit, in the end, to obtain closed-form expressions for the main TILO performances in terms of the design parameters…

Determination of selenium, zinc and cadmium in antidandruff shampoos by atomic spectrometry after microwave assisted sample digestion

2000

Microwave assisted pre-treatments for atomic spectrometric determination (inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, ICP-OES or flame atomic absorption spectrometry, FAAS) of metallic elements, usually present in antidandruff shampoos, are proposed. They are based on the digestion of the sample with HNO(3) into a closed reactor, which is irradiated at 800 W for a few minutes. Selenium was determined by ICP-OES. The limit of detection was 0.11 mg l(-1); the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for the selenium content in the samples was in the 0.6-3.6% range. The results obtained were in agreement with the label contents and the recovery of the proposed method was in the 100-106…

Design of PNIPAAM covalently grafted on halloysite nanotubes as a support for metal-based catalysts

2016

A thermo-responsive polymer such as poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) was covalently grafted on the external surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by means of microwave irradiation. This nanomaterial was used as a support and stabilizer for palladium nanoparticles. The obtained HNT–PNIPAAM/PdNPs was characterized by means of TGA, SEM, EDS and TEM analyses. The palladium content of the catalyst was estimated to be 0.4 wt%. The stability of the catalytic material at different temperatures (below and above the PNIPAAM lower critical solution temperature) was tested in the Suzuki reaction under microwave irradiation. In addition, TEM analysis after five consecutive runs was performed. The …

The measurement of impurities in silicon for solar cell production

2012

The power conversion efficiency of solar cells is largely dependent on impurity levels in silicon. In the current investigations two sample preparation methods of silicon had been used before analysis - acid dissolution at atmospheric pressure and pressured microwave assisted technique. Quantification of impurities in solar silicon was done by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and electrothermal atomic spectrometry. Microwave assisted dissolution of solar silicon was more effective compared to the traditional dissolution method on the hot plate, but complete dissolution of impurities and silicon matrix was achieved with a nitric and hydrofluoric acid mixture. The mass of solar si…
