In the last several years, bone anchored hearing aids have proven to be useful in treating conductive and mixed unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, as well as for sensorineural unilateral hearing loss. The Sophono Alpha 1 model has the advantage of not requiring an abutment, with it being coupled by magnetism instead. We report the cases of 3 infants with congenital malformations of external and middle ear. Audiometry showed conductive hearing loss. All 3 patients were implanted with Alpha 1 model (Sophono). ABSTRACT The passage of radioiodinated streptolysin-O (SLO) and albumin through the round window membrane (RWM) was studied in vivo. When applied to the middle ear, SLO became quantitatively entrapped in this compartment and no passage to the cochlea occurred. However, flux of radioiodinated albumin through the toxin-damaged RWM was observed. We propose that the passage of noxious macromolecules, such as proteases, from a purulent middle-ear effusion may be facilitated by pore-forming toxins, resulting in cochlear damage and sensorineural hearing loss.

Ca2(+)-ATPase activity was studied ultra-cytochemically in the middle ear mucosa of the guinea pig. On electron microscopic examination, the most intense reaction was found on the microvilli. Reaction products were also observed on the cilia and around and between the secretory granules on the apical side of the cells in their secretory phase. The basolateral membranes contained few reaction products, while very little or no activity was found on the basal membrane.

Cations were precipitated with potassium-pyroantimonate in the middle ear mucosa of the rat and the distribution of the formed precipitates was studied by electron microscopy. The precipitate density in various cells of the different epithelia of the middle ear mucosa was determined on electron micrographs by counting the number of precipitates per unit area. Electron spectroscopic imaging was also performed to obtain information about the spatial distribution of the precipitates and their elemental composition.

BACKGROUND: Piezosurgery is a new instrument able to cut bone without necrosis and non-mineralized tissue damage. The aim of this study was to test the Piezosurgery as a new and alternative method for the excision of middle-ear tumors and to analyze its effects on soft tissues. MATERIAL/METHODS: The Piezosurgery device was used to excise eight glomus tympanicum tumors and two primary B-cell lymphomas of the middle ear.
