Detecting the T1 cattle haplogroup in the Iberian Peninsula from Neolithic to medieval times: new clues to continuous cattle migration through time
2015
Abstract The spread of domestic animals through time is one of the topics studied by archaeologists to assess human trade and migration. Here we present mitochondrial analysis of 42 archaeological cattle ( Bos taurus ) bone samples, from 16 different sites in the Iberian Peninsula and covering a broad timeframe (from the early Neolithic to the Middle Ages), to provide evidence about the origin and dispersion of the T1 cattle haplogroup in relation to human contacts and movements. The presence of the T1 haplotype in one sample from an early Neolithic site close to the Mediterranean coast of Iberia, and its continuing presence in the Peninsula during Roman and Medieval times, clearly demonstr…
A Multi-scalar Approach to Long-Term Dynamics, Spatial Relations and Economic Networks of Roman Secondary Settlements in Italy and the Ombrone Valley…
2019
AbstractIn Roman landscapes, the particular sites defined as secondary settlements (also known as vici/villages, minor centres, agglomérations secondaires and/or stationes/mansiones) have played an ‘intermediary’ role between the cities and other rural structures (villae/farms), linked to medium- and long-distance economic and commercial trajectories. The aim of this paper is to apply a multi-scalar approach to model their long-term spatial relationships and connectivity with the Mediterranean exchange network. On the macro-scale, we have analysed a sample of 219 reviewed sites to understand the diachronic trends and spatial dynamics of attraction/proximity to significant elements of the la…

Il medioevo fantastico di Maria Accascina. Il soffitto di Palazzo Chiaramonte. Bataille e Documents
2022
2019
After the Sicilian Vespers, the Cathedral of Monreale was neglected because of the to lack of funds, due to the war between the Angevins and the Aragonese. In the 14th century the inhabitans of Palermo, popes and kings pointed out that the wonderful church built by William II was in bad condition, and they were afraid it would collapse. The funds for the restoration were not enough, because the archbishopric had to pay high royal and papal levies. The Chiaromonte, lords of Palermo, controlled Monreale and the assets of the diocese were administered by knights, merchants, and notaries of Palermo. Moreover marammieri, carpenters and masons engaged in the renovation work came from Palermo. In …

The dry stone wall of 'Paretone dei Greci': an anthracological approach
2011
International audience; Dry stone constructions are a common occurrence in many Mediterranean landscapes. One of these structures known as "Paretone dei Greci" (Taranto, Southern Italy), was subject to an archaeological investigation. Soil and sediment material within this wall, as well as those above and below it, were sampled and processed for archaeobotanical studies. In this manner it was possible to understand its building technique as well as giving it a chronological context. Through an anthracological analysis it was possible to insert the "Paretone" within the surrounding agricultural landscape, thus better highlighting its function in relation to the history of the territory
