The Dual/Global Value of SARS-CoV-2 Genome Surveillance on Migrants Arriving to Europe via the Mediterranean Routes.
2021
Despite the pandemic, 34,154 migrants, refugees or asylum-seekers landed in Sicily (Italy) in 2020, representing the main point of entry by sea into Europe. The SARS-CoV-2 surveillance program among migrants arriving to Sicily via the Mediterranean Sea, made by the combination of clinical examination and molecular testing, has been integrated by full-genome sequencing strains using the NGS technology from the last week of February. To date, more than one hundred full-genome strains have been sequenced and 8 different lineages have been identified mostly belonging to the lineages B.1.1.7 and B.1.525. As global access to COVID-19 vaccines should be ensured, the need to provide more detailed i…
Language and literacy in new migration. Research, practice and policy
2021
Recent migration towards Europe is characterized by the massive presence of adults whose educational paths have been interrupted and who are thus developing literacy for the first time in a new language. A literacy test elaborated at the University of Palermo, Italy, showed that, on a sample of 774 migrants, about 30 percent could not read and/or write short words. This test assessed the learners’ abilities to read and write, whether in the Roman alphabet or in other writing systems, and whether in Italian or in other languages of learners’ repertoires. These learners with emergent literacy mostly came from sub-Saharan Africa, an area characterized by diverse forms of multilingualism, and a…

The essay take into account the increase in the number of abortion among migrant women in Italy in the wider context of the living conditions of these women which are often subjected to a multiple discrimination related to gender, migrant status, and kind of job. Exploiting for Care: Trafficking and Abuse in Domestic Work in Italy
2017
ABSTRACTCare workers are now an essential part of reality for many Italian families. Yet, despite advancements in regulating domestic work, abuses are widespread. This article explores why exploitation in domestic work is rarely viewed as such and addressed with policies concerning trafficking and exploitation. I look at the way in which the care issue has been addressed by the Italian state and at the peculiar relationship between employers and domestic workers. Furthermore, I focus on the gaps in policies on trafficking and exploitation. I argue that the interplay of these factors results in the “normalization” of exploitation in domestic work.
L’incriminazione dello smuggling of migrants in Europa: una ricognizione comparatistica
2019
Il lavoro opera una ricognizione comparatistica di varie discipline del migrant smuggling: internazionale (Protocollo ONU), sovranazionale (UE Facilitation package) e nazionali (Italia, Portogallo, Spagna, Germania), a partire dai dati raccolti nel corso della ricerca "The New Era of Smuggling in the Mediterranean Sea" (2017-19), finanziata da PMI
L'assistenza umanitaria delle ONG sotto inchiesta
2022

Smuggled migrants as victims? Reflecting on the UN Protocol against migrant smuggling and on its implementation
2021
After outlining the UN Protocol’s general approach to migrant smuggling, the paper raises the question of whether and to what extent smuggled migrants can be said to be victims of this crime. The author argues that an affirmative answer is possible in at least three different senses: smuggled migrants can be victimized by states fighting against migrant smuggling and irregular immigration (secondary victimization); but, of course, they can also be victimized by smugglers (primary victimization), in two ways: first, if smuggling is so performed as to put their lives, physical integrity or dignity at risk; secondly, smugglers also victimize migrants by profiting of their vulnerable condition,…
Il traffico di migranti. Diritti, tutele, criminalizzazione
2015
