The lesser kestrel is a small colonial falcon with a broad breeding distribution range, extending from the Iberian Peninsula to eastern China. Most of the biological and ecological knowledge concerning this species, including migration, has been obtained from European populations. After the end of each breeding season, these populations move preferentially northward, showing pre-migratory movements (of 100–1,000 km) that are necessary to reach rich foraging grounds where they can fuel before commencing the true migration towards Africa. B8, DR3 antigens and production of human leucocyte migration inhibitory factor (LIF) by mononuclear cells stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A)

LIF release by Con A stimulated mononuclear cells was evaluated in 67 randomly selected healthy Sicilians typed for HLA antigens. The results show that B8 and/or DR3 positive subjects release less LIF than negative ones, suggesting that this immunological response might be controlled by HLA-linked immune response (Ir) gene(s).

Spontaneous lymphokine production by human B lymphocytes.

When human blood lymphocytes are cultured in vitro without any intended stimulus, they produce activities in the supernatant resembling lymphokine. This phenomenon was further investigated in the present study, where it has been demonstrated by physicochemical characterization and inhibition experiments that leukocyte migration inhibitory activity in the supernatants is due to leukocyte inhibitory factor (LIF). MANY chemotactic factors, usually proteins or peptides, have been isolated and studied, but little is known about the basic mechanism of leukocyte migration. This movement is termed chemotaxis if its direction is determined by substances in the cells' environment1. The chemotactic agent is assumed to convey information to the leukocytes by interaction with receptors. Annexin-1 (ANX-1) is an anti-inflammatory protein induced by glucocorticoids. Like glucocorticoids, ANX-1 and derived peptides inhibit eicosanoid synthesis, block leukocyte migration and induce apoptosis of inflammatory cells. Cytokines may possess either pro-inflammatory, i.e. interleukin(IL)-1beta, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-12 or anti-inflammatory properties, i.e. IL-4, IL-10. Effect of imidazo[1,2-α]pyrimidine derivatives on leukocyte function

Objective and Design: A series of six imidazo[1,2-α]pyrimidine (IP) derivatives were evaluated for their effects on leukocyte functions in vitro as well as on the inflammatory response induced by zymosan in the mouse air pouch.¶Materials and Subjects: Human neutrophils and murine peritoneal macrophages were used for in vitro assays. Effects of some isoxazolpyrimidine derivatives on nitric oxide and eicosanoid biosynthesis

Abstract The inhibitory effect of some isoxazolpyrimidine derivatives on iNOS and COX-2 endotoxin induction in mouse peritoneal macrophages has been studied. Three of these compounds inhibited nitrite and PGE2 accumulation in a concentration dependent-manner at μM range. None of these active compounds affected iNOS, COX-2, COX-1 or PLA2 activities, although some reduced iNOS or COX-2 expression. Besides, no effect was observed on human neutrophil inflammatory responses (LTB4 biosynthesis and Superoxide or elastase release). We have evaluated the effects of the novel anti-inflammatory agent florifenine, 2-(1-Pyrrolidinyl)ethyl N-[7-(trifluoromethyl)-4-quinolyl]anthranilate, on topical inflammation in mice, free radical-mediated reactions, arachidonic acid metabolism and some neutrophil functions. Topical administration of florifenine produced dose-related anti-inflammatory activity in 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear oedema and with a lower potency, in the response induced by arachidonic acid (AA).
