Strategies of migration and wintering of Italian lesser kestrel Falco naumanni populations.

2017

Avian migration is naturally a plastic trait, and tracking migratory birds is problematic because of distances and areas involved. Electronic data loggers (e.g. light-level geolocators, GPS/GSM tags, etc) provide a means to directly follow several individuals and understand migration routes and geographic patterns of population displacements in overwintering areas. Thanks to the collaboration between different projects (PRIN, LIFE+ LIFE11/NAT/IT068), we tracked lesser kestrels equipped with GPS/UHF and GLS devices and we analyzed the migration data of more than 20 individuals breeding in different populations of Sicily (Gela Plain) and Southern Italy (Altamura, Gravina). The weights of comp…

Purpose: The article aims to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic about legal migrants in selected European Union countries amidst the tighter restrictions and travel constraints introduced worldwide. Design/Methodology/Approach: The article uses data and source analysis and a modeling method to demonstrate the extrapolation of migration trends. Findings: The employed methodology enabled the authors to establish that in Poland, Portugal, Latvia, and Belgium, measures were taken to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of legal migrants residing on their territories during the introduction of the movement restrictions. Practical Implications: According to the authors, the ex…

Border Maps. (Counter-)cartographies of the Mediterranean

2020

Sense of belonging to Latvia in Latvian- and Russian-speaking residents of Latvia

2019

This study examined the sense of belonging to Latvia in Latvian-speaking and Russianspeaking residents of Latvia. The structural model involved opportunities for the fulfillment of personal goals and views of the situation in Latvia and the community as predictors of the sense of belonging at both levels of ecological systems. The Russianspeaking subsample consisted of 202 students ranging in age from 18 to 36 (65% females). The Latvian-speaking subsample involved 438 students ranging in age from 18 to 37 (67% females). The Sense of Belonging in Social Context Questionnaire and the Future of Country Questionnaire were applied. Belonging to community predicted belonging to Latvia in both gro…

Peer ethnicity and achievement: a meta-analysis into the compositional effect

2010

This study reports a meta-analysis on the effects of ethnic minority share in school on achievement test scores. Best evidence from the studies that have appeared thus far on this topic shows that these compositional effects appear small in general, but may be larger when the ethnic minority group is African Americans in the USA, than when the minority group consists of immigrants. A high share of students from an ethnic minority group seems to affect the achievement from students belonging to the same ethnic group more, than the achievement of students belonging to the ethnic majority or to other ethnic minority groups. Effects of the share of immigrants on test scores of ethnic majority s…

Performance Analysis of Memory Cloning Solutions in Mobile Edge Computing

2018

This paper deals with the problem of service migration in the emerging scenarios of Mobile Edge Computing. Mobile edge computing is achieved by moving the traditional cloud infrastructures, exploited by many today applications, close to the network edge in order to reduce the response times in the so called tactile-internet. However, because of user mobility, such an application architecture may pose the problem of service migration in case of handover from one server site to another. After introducing the current solutions for dealing with service migration and, in particular, the approaches based on service decomposition into multiple layers, we quantify the migration time and the service…
