Biomonitoring of bisphenols A, F, S in human milk and probabilistic risk assessment for breastfed infants

The present study addresses the presence of bisphenols A (BPA) and its analogs bisphenol F (BPF) and S (BPS) in milk of 120 mothers living in Valencia (Spain) and participating in the BETTERMILK project (year 2015). We also studied the factors that could influence the BPA levels and estimated the exposure and the risk for breast fed infants. The frequency of detection of total (conjugated + unconjugated) and unconjugated-BPA were 83% and 77%. with a geometric mean of 0.29 ng/mL and 0.15 ng/mL, respectively. Bile salt-stimulated lipase activity in human colostrum from mothers of infants of different gestational age and birthweight.

The bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL) activity was measured in milk collected at 3–4 days postpartum (colostrum) from 36 mothers divided into three groups according to gestational age and birthweight of their infants. BSSL activity changed with the length of gestation. Preterm colostrum presented a mean activity significantly higher than the term groups (small-for-gestational age and appropriate-for-gestational age) which had similar values. The ratio of BSSL activity to the estimated fat content was 6.33 in colostrum of mothers who delivered preterm and 4.20 in colostrum of both groups of term mothers. Food Hypersensitivity as a Cause of Rectal Bleeding in Adults

Background & Aims Rectal bleeding and lymphonodular hyperplasia (LNH) in children can be caused by food hypersensitivity (FH). Our aim was to verify whether similar clinical and endoscopy presentations in adults can be due to FH. Methods Consecutive adult patients with rectal bleeding were enrolled. All underwent routine assays, colonoscopy, and histology study. Results Ten of 64 (15%) patients showed LNH as the unique sign at colonoscopy. An oligoantigenic diet resolved the rectal bleeding in 9 patients, and the reintroduction of several foods caused symptom reappearance. Impact of lactation stage, gestational age and mode of delivery on breast milk microbiota.

There is an increasing evidence of the immunological role of breast milk (BM) microbiota on infant health. This study aims to analyze several determining factors of milk microbiota. A total of 96 milk samples from 32 healthy mothers (19 preterm vs 13 at term gestations; and 15 vaginal deliveries vs 17 Cesarean sections) were longitudinally collected. Microbiota composition was studied by quantitative PCR and the influence of lactation stage, gestational age and delivery mode was evaluated. Globally, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus and Enterococcus spp. were the predominant bacterial groups. Bimodal porous silica nanomaterials as sorbents for an efficient and inexpensive determination of aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products

Abstract An extraction procedure was developed for the determination of aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products. A sorbent based on UVM-7 mesoporous silica was used as solid phase for the sample clean-up, and the analyte determination was carried out by HPLC coupled to a fluorescence detector. The material architecture was characterized by transmission electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, 29Si NMR and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. After the optimization of extraction parameters, the influence of the matrix has been evaluated, obtaining recoveries in the range 78–105% for whole and skimmed milk and yogurt matrix. Recent aflatoxin survey data in milk and milk products: A review

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) occurrence in human and animal milk, infant formula, powdered milk, cheese and yoghurt represents a risk for health. The last four years (2010–2014) of data, as well as the most frequently and updated analytical methods applied for AFM1 quantification, are evaluated. Aflatoxin B1, considered the most potent toxic aflatoxin, is metabolised to form the monohydroxy derivative AFM1. This metabolized, expressed in the milk, is relatively stable, and it is not eliminated by heat treatments or pasteurisation, and thus represents a serious health concern.

Presence of aflatoxin M1 in pasteurized milk from Morocco

Fifty four samples of pasteurized milk produced by five different dairies from Morocco were surveyed for the presence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) using immunoaffinity columns and liquid chromatography coupled to fluorescence detection. Confirmation of AFM1 identity in positive samples was based on the formation of AFM1 hemi-acetal derivative (AFM2a) after derivatization with trifluoracetic acid. Analytical results showed that 88.8% of the samples were contaminated with AFM1; 7.4% being above the maximum level of 0.05 microg/L set by the Moroccan and European regulations for AFM1 in liquid milk.
