Lipid content and essential fatty acid (EFA) composition of mature Congolese breast milk are influenced by mothers' nutritional status: Impact on inf…
1998
To measure the lipid content and the fatty acid (FA) composition of breast milk as part of a nutritional survey of the essential fatty acid (EFA) status of 5 months old Congolese infants.Cross sectional nutrition survey.A suburban district of Brazzaville (capital of the Congo).A random sample of nursing mothers and their 5 months old infants (n = 102). Data collection procedures: The mothers were questioned on their socio-economic status, dietary habits, and their body mass index (BMI) was measured. Breast milk samples were collected from each mother. Milk lipid content and fatty acid composition were determined.Compared with milk from various countries, Congolese women's mature breast milk…
Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.
1999
The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea. Selenium contents of the analyzed infants' formulas ranged from 2.7 to 9.6 ng/ml and from 1.8 to 7.5 ng/ml for soy and milk-based in…
Effect of apolar phase dielectric constant on interfacial properties of β-lactoglobulin (dielectric constant and interfacial properties of β-lactoglo…
2005
International audience; In this work, we hypothesized that the difference in the dielectric constant value existing between two non-miscible phases such as oil and water could be partially responsible for both protein unfolding and reorganization of the protein structure at the interface. So, we replaced the oil phase, whose dielectric constant value is 2, by organic solvents chosen for both their non-miscibility with water and their range of dielectric constant values higher (range 6.1-7.2) than that of oil. Using a dynamic drop tensiometer, we studied both surface activity and viscoelastic properties of the milk protein at various interfaces. The aqueous phase (pH7; 25°C) contained the co…
A multicommutated flow system for determination of bismuth in milk shakes by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry incorporating on-lin…
2004
Abstract A highly sensitive method was developed for determination of bismuth in milk shakes by multicommutation hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) based on off-line sonication for 10 min with aqua regia 8% (v/v) and on-line waste treatment. The instrumentation and chemistry variables were studied in order to provide the best performance. The limit of detection in the original samples, established for a probability level of 99.6% (k = 3), was 1.67 ng/g Bi. The method provides a fast alternative in control analysis with a sampling throughput of 72 h as compared with 31 h obtained by the classical continuous measurement. Additionally, multicommutation reduces waste g…
Eight-week consumption of milk enriched with omega 3 fatty acids raises their blood concentrations yet does not affect lipids and cardiovascular dise…
2014
Adequate concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids (FA) may be maintained by consuming foods naturally rich in or functional foods enriched with those essential FA. We assessed the effects of an 8-week consumption of milk enriched with 400. mg of omega 3 FA on blood lipid levels and selected cardiovascular risk factors in adult healthy volunteers. Participants (n= 157) were randomized to consume - for eight weeks - either 500. mL/day of 1% fat milk providing 150. mg of eicosapentaenoic (EPA), 150. mg of docosahexaenoic (DHA), and 100. mg of α-linolenic (ALA) acids or 500. mL/day of non-enriched 1% fat milk. At week 8, we observed significant increments of blood EPA and DHA in the intervention g…
Milk versus caseinophosphopeptides added to fruit beverage: Resistance and release from simulated gastrointestinal digestion
2010
The influence of simulated gastrointestinal digestion on caseinophosphopeptides (CPPs) formation in milk-based fruit beverage was evaluated, together with resistance of a pool of CPPs added to fruit beverage. In milk-based fruit beverage, four CPPs were identified that can be justified by their presence in raw milk or due to processing. When it was subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion, 10 CPPs were identified, and only 1 presented the cluster (SpSpSpEE) (3 phosphoseryl group followed by 2 glutamic acid residues), which corresponded to αs2-CN(1-19)4P. CPPs added to fruit beverage are resistant to simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and 16 CPPs were identified originating from …
MIUSCAT: extended MILES spectral coverage - II. Constraints from optical photometry
2012
In the present work we show a comprehensive comparison of our new stellar population synthesis MIUSCAT models with photometric data of globular clusters and early-type galaxies. The models compare remarkably well with the colours of Milky Way globular clusters in the optical range. Likewise, the colours of M31 globular clusters can also be explained by the models by assuming younger ages then their Galactic counterparts. When compared with quiescent galaxies we reproduce the colour evolution at intermediate redshift. On the other hand we find that the colour relations of nearby early-type galaxies are still a challenge for present-day stellar population synthesis models. We investigate a nu…
Stellar Wakes from Dark Matter Subhalos
2017
We propose a novel method utilizing stellar kinematic data to detect low-mass substructure in the Milky Way's dark matter halo. By probing characteristic wakes that a passing dark matter subhalo leaves in the phase space distribution of ambient halo stars, we estimate sensitivities down to subhalo masses $\sim 10^7\,M_\odot$ or below. The detection of such subhalos would have implications for dark-matter and cosmological models that predict modifications to the halo-mass function at low halo masses. We develop an analytic formalism for describing the perturbed stellar phase-space distributions, and we demonstrate through simulations the ability to detect subhalos using the phase-space model…
Album: A Tool for the Analysis of Slitless Spectra and its Application to ESO WFI Data
2008
ALBUM is a general-purpose tool to visualize and screen large amounts of slitless spectra∈dex slitless spectra. It was developed for a search for emission-line stars in SMC and LMC clusters. The observations were obtained with ESO’s Wide Field Imager (WFI∈dexWFI) and comprise ~8 million low-resolution spectra. The tool as well as the results of its application to the SMC part of the database are presented. The inferred frequency of Be stars is compared to the one in the higher-metallicity environment of the Milky Way.
