On Grinberg’s Criterion

2019

We generalize Grinberg’s hamiltonicity criterion for planar graphs. To this end, we first prove a technical theorem for embedded graphs. As a special case of a corollary of this theorem we obtain Zaks’ extension of Grinberg’s Criterion (which encompasses earlier work of Gehner and Shimamoto), but the result also implies Grinberg’s formula in its original form in a much broader context. Further implications are a short proof for a slightly strengthened criterion of Lewis bounding the length of a shortest closed walk from below as well as a generalization of a theorem due to Bondy and Häggkvist. The Hamilton Depression Scale and Its Alternatives: A Comparison of Their Reliability and Validity

1990

The efficacy of medical treatments is evidenced by a demonstrated reduction in the severity of the disorder being treated relative to a control condition. At the beginning of the era of psychopharmacology, in the late 1950s, neither a well-defined concept nor a well-defined measurement of the severity of depression, schizophrenia, or anxiety disorders were available. Consequently, it was difficult to compare groups of treated patients on the basis of treatment-specific rates of recovery. Hamilton was one of the first to recognize this lack and to create methods for standardizing the measurement of the effects of drugs across both patients and treatments. His idea was that a standardized mea…

Endosymbiont communities in Bemisia tabaci: a metagenomic approach

2014

Two Host Clades, Two Bacterial Arsenals: Evolution through Gene Losses in Facultative Endosymbionts.

2015

International audience; Bacterial endosymbiosis is an important evolutionary process in insects, which can harbor both obligate and facultative symbionts. The evolution of these symbionts is driven by evolutionary convergence, and they exhibit among the tiniest genomes in prokaryotes. The large host spectrum of facultative symbionts and the high diversity of strategies they use to infect new hosts probably impact the evolution of their genome and explain why they undergo less severe genomic erosion than obligate symbionts. Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa is suitable for the investigation of the genomic evolution of facultative symbionts because the bacteria are engaged in specific relations…

Influence of Bacterial Secondary Symbionts in Sitobion avenae on Its Survival Fitness against Entomopathogenic Fungi, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhiz…

2022

The research was focused on the ability of wheat aphids Sitobion avenae, harboring bacterial secondary symbionts (BSS) Hamiltonella defensa or Regiella insecticola, to withstand exposure to fungal isolates of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium brunneum. In comparison to aphids lacking bacterial secondary symbionts, BSS considerably increased the lifespan of wheat aphids exposed to B. bassiana strains (Bb1022, EABb04/01-Tip) and M. brunneum strains (ART 2825 and BIPESCO 5) and also reduced the aphids’ mortality. The wheat aphid clones lacking bacterial secondary symbionts were shown to be particularly vulnerable to M. brunneum strain BIPESCO 5. As opposed to wheat aphids carrying bacterial s…

On critical behaviour in systems of Hamiltonian partial differential equations

2013

Abstract We study the critical behaviour of solutions to weakly dispersive Hamiltonian systems considered as perturbations of elliptic and hyperbolic systems of hydrodynamic type with two components. We argue that near the critical point of gradient catastrophe of the dispersionless system, the solutions to a suitable initial value problem for the perturbed equations are approximately described by particular solutions to the Painlevé-I (P $$_I$$ I ) equation or its fourth-order analogue P $$_I^2$$ I 2 . As concrete examples, we discuss nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the semiclassical limit. A numerical study of these cases provides strong evidence in support of the conjecture.

Inverse eigenvalue problem for normal J-hamiltonian matrices

2015

[EN] A complex square matrix A is called J-hamiltonian if AT is hermitian where J is a normal real matrix such that J(2) = -I-n. In this paper we solve the problem of finding J-hamiltonian normal solutions for the inverse eigenvalue problem. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Analytic energy gradients for the spin-free exact two-component theory using an exact block diagonalization for the one-electron Dirac Hamiltonian.

2011

We report the implementation of analytic energy gradients for the evaluation of first-order electrical properties and nuclear forces within the framework of the spin-free (SF) exact two-component (X2c) theory. In the scheme presented here, referred to in the following as SFX2c-1e, the decoupling of electronic and positronic solutions is performed for the one-electron Dirac Hamiltonian in its matrix representation using a single unitary transformation. The resulting two-component one-electron matrix Hamiltonian is combined with untransformed two-electron interactions for subsequent self-consistent-field and electron-correlated calculations. The "picture-change" effect in the calculation of p…

Correlation at low temperature I. Exponential decay

2003

Abstract The present paper generalizes the analysis in (Ann. H. Poincare 1 (2000) 59, Math. J. (AMS) 8 (1997) 123) of the correlations for a lattice system of real-valued spins at low temperature. The Gibbs measure is assumed to be generated by a fairly general Hamiltonian function with pair interaction. The novelty, as compared to [2,20], is that the single-site (self-) energies of the spins are not required to have only a single local minimum and no other extrema. Our derivation of exponential decay of correlations goes through the spectral analysis of a deformed Laplacian closely related to the Witten Laplacian studied in [2,20]. We prove that this Laplacian has a spectral gap above zero…
