Ethnoarchaeometry can be used to test assumptions in ceramic provenance studies. Within the Late Roman Cooking Wares (LRCW’s) commercialised in the Western Mediterranean some fabrics such as Fabrics 1.2, 1.6/1.7 and 1.9 (Fulford and Peacock, 1984) have been proposed to have a Sardinian origin. This motivated a specific project to explore the nature of cooking pottery on the island and the raw clays as well as the production technologies that have been used traditionally for their manufacture. Ellipsometric thickness and coverage of physisorbed layers of Xe, Kr, Ar and N2 on graphite

Multilayer isotherms of Xe, Kr, Ar and N2 physisorbed on graphite (001) have been studied by ellipsometry. It is shown that the model of Dignam and Fedyk provides an excellent basis for the interpretation of the ellipsometric thickness in terms of the coverage and the polarizability of the admolecules. For N2 conclusions concerning the orientation of the molecule are drawn.

Palaeodietary reconstruction using the carbon and nitrogen isotope values of bone and dentine collagen is a well-established method and the biochemical processes involved are well known. Researchers have recently explored using bulk samples of dental calculus as a substitute for bone and dentine collagen in dietary analyses, because calculus can be sampled without causing damage to the teeth, and may be useful in situations where more destructive analyses are not possible, or where collagen is poorly preserved. Synthesis and structural and ionic conductivity studies of Na2ZrSi4O11

The compound Na 2 ZrSi 4 O 1 1 has been prepared both by solid state synthesis and by the sol-gel technique via alkoxides. The structure of Na 2 ZrSi 4 O 11 was investigated by the Rietveld method using X-ray diffractometer data. The powder diffraction data show evidence for a triclinic distortion of the basic monoclinic structure. The ionic conductivity has been determined in the temperature interval 130-560°C using a.c. impedance measurements. The Na + ion mobility is limited, with E a =1.04 eV and σ(300°C)= 2-9 10 7 S/cm. Samples with Ta partially substituted for Zr, according to the formula Na 2-x (Zr 1-x Ta x )Si 4 O 11 with x ≤0.2, showed the same evidence for a triclinic distortion. …

Inorganic arsenic species in groundwater: A case study from Purbasthali (Burdwan), India

A regional groundwater quality survey from 20 tube wells in the Purbasthali area of the Burdwan district of West Bengal province (India) identified arsenic pollution in this area. Arsenic was detected in 19 cases at a concentration level 0.5 to 135.9 micrograms/L. Speciation studies indicate that As(III) is present in only one sample and organo-arsenic compounds have not been detected. Iron, antimony and pH of such water samples were also studied to see if there is any correlation of the presence of arsenic and these parameters. The Peloritani Mountains (Northeastern Sicily) are part of a segment of the Hercynian chain recognized in the Calabrian-Peloritan Arc, geotectonically defined by a pre-Hercynian crystalline basement (Aspromonte Nappe + Mandanici Unit) overthrust and overturned on its Paleozoic (Cambro-Ordovician up to Devonian Carboniferous) volcanosedimentary cover. Simultaneous segmentation and beam-hardening correction in computed microtomography of rock cores

We propose a post-reconstruction correction procedure for the beam-hardening artifact that neither requires knowledge of the X-ray spectrum nor of the attenuation coefficients in multi-mineral geologic samples. The beam-hardening artifact in polychromatic X-ray computer tomography (CT) hampers segmentation of the phase assemblage in geologic samples. We show that in cylindrically shaped samples like rock cores, the X-ray attenuation value for a single phase depends mainly on the distance from the center of the cylinder. This relationship could be easily extracted from the CT data for every phase and used to infer the presence of these phases at all positions in the sample. Our new approach …

Pre-main sequence stars are variable sources. In stars with disks, this variability is related to the morphology of the inner circumstellar region (<0.1 AU) and that of the photosphere and corona, all impossible to be spatially resolved with present day techniques. This has been the main motivation for the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264. In this paper, we focus on the stars with disks. We analyze the X-ray spectral properties extracted during optical bursts and dips in order to unveil the nature of these phenomena.
