CLAYS IN COSMETICS AND PERSONAL-CARE PRODUCTS

2021

Clays are used in various cosmetic formulations, such as sunscreens, toothpastes, deodorants, creams, hair cosmetics, makeups, nail polish, facial masks, and shampoos, among others, to improve the organoleptic and physicochemical characteristics, to increase the stability, or to facilitate elaboration. Together with their technological functionalities, clays are cosmetologically active ingredients with cleaning, anti-aging, anti-wrinkling, and sun-care functionalities. Talc, kaolinite, mica, and some smectites are the clay minerals used most frequently in cosmetic products, but several other phyllosilicates as well as modified and synthetic clays are also used. Sometimes, clays are useful i…

Green coffee, bioactive compounds’ analysis of experimental cultivation in Sicily: a new frontier in the Sicilian food sector

2023

Recently, climate change represents a new possibility for tropical cultivars fruit in Mediterranean areas. The focus of this work is the evaluation of the real possibility of coffee cultivation in Sicily, like coffee plants grown in tropical and subtropical regions. The objective was to evaluate plant adaptation to our climate and to study the chemical qualities of green coffee pulps and seeds: total phenolic content, antiradical capacity, fatty acids, amino acids, alkaloids, vitamins, proximate composition, polyphenolic profile and other bioactive compounds of cosmetic, pharmaceutical and agrary interest. Temperature, light and vegetative growth of Coffea arabica L. cv. “Caturra” plants we…

Utilisation des minéraux lourds comme indicateurs de paléoplacers alluvionnaires diamantifères en République centrafricaine (RCA). Use of heavy miner…

2001

Effects of Tray-Drying on the Physicochemical, Microbiological, Proximate, and Sensory Properties of White- and Red-Fleshed Loquat (Eriobotrya Japoni…

2022

Loquat fruits, highly valued by consumers for their characteristic aroma and pleasant taste, have a short post-harvest life and are susceptible to mechanical damage, loss of firmness, and initial organoleptic characteristics. The aim of this work was to develop a drying method suitable for storing loquat fruits in polyamide/polyethylene (PA/PE) bags containing two gaseous mixtures (treatments): MAPN2 (100% N2) and MAPP (21% O2 and 0.04% CO2), at room temperature (20 ± 1 °C) for at least 2 months. The effects of these conditions on the physico-chemical, microbiological, proximate, and sensory properties of fruit stored over a 50-day time interval were studied. The results showed that convect…

Investigation of carbonized layer on surface of NaAlSi glass fibers

2013

There are presented and discussed experimental results about carbonate shell on the sodium rich alumosilicate (NaAlSi) glass fibers and carbonization in wet air atmosphere and water uptake kinetic of such fiber fabrics. The analyzes of water uptake kinetic by regression technique, leaching and heating of carbonized glass fabrics helped to separate stages of fast and slow processes between fiber and carbonate shell and air atmosphere. The shell contains mixture of trona and hydrated sodium carbonate. Heating converts both substances to sodium carbonate. The weight uptake after heating encounters two fast exponential processes associated with water absorption on the surface of carbonated shel…

MAHONIA AQUIFOLIUM AS A PROMISING RAW MATERIAL FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY

2017

The development of the food industry leads to the expansion of the range of processed raw materials. Mahonia aquifolium today can be attributed to the non-traditional agricultural plants. However, the analysis of the chemical composition of the fruits showed that they contain significant amount of carbohydrates, vitamin C, various minerals, which recommend it for a wider use in the diet. Also due to the presence in the fruits of Mahonia aquifolium anthocyanins can extend of the use as raw material for natural anthocyanin dyes obtaining.

Isotope distribution of dissolved carbonate species in southeastern coastal aquifers of Sicily (Italy)

2007

Concentrations of major ions and the δ13C composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in groundwater and submarine groundwater discharges in the area between Siracusa and Ragusa provinces, southeastern Sicily, representing coastal carbonate aquifers, are presented and discussed. Most of groundwater analysed belongs to calcium bicarbonate type, in agreement with the geological nature of carbonate host rocks. Carbonate groundwater acquires, besides the dissolution of carbonate minerals, dissolved carbon (and the relative isotopic composition) from the atmosphere and from soil biological activity. In fact, δ13C values and total dissolved inorganic carbon contents show that both these sources con…

CO2 release to the atmosphere from thermal springs of Sperchios Basin and northern Euboea (Greece): The contribution of “hidden” degassing

2020

Abstract Greece is a region characterised by intense geodynamic activity that favours the circulation of hydrothermal fluids in the crust transporting volatiles from either the deep crust or the mantle to the surface. Elevated heat flow values are detectable at Sperchios Basin and North Euboea (central Greece), two areas defined by a system of deeply rooted extensional faults and Quaternary volcanic activity. This setting contributed to the formation of numerous hydrothermal systems, which are mostly expressed as CO2-rich thermal springs with intense bubbling. The CO2 output from six bubbling pools has been determined by flux measurements with the use of the floating chamber method. The hig…

Enrichment and activation of smectite-poor clay

2011

A new method of smectite clay enrichment has been developed. The method is based on dispersing clay in a phosphate solution and sequential coagulation. The product of enrichment is characterized with X-ray powder diffraction, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry. Sorption of methylene blue and hexadecylpyridinium bromide on raw and purified clays was studied.
