Point-to-point readout for the ALICE EMCal detector

Abstract It is anticipated that the LHC will deliver Pb+Pb collisions at a minimum bias interaction rate of about 50 kHz after the second long shutdown of the LHC in 2018. This will be roughly two orders of magnitude greater than the current data recording rate capability of the ALICE experiment. Therefore a major upgrade of the ALICE detector is planned for the next shutdown to enable ALICE to record data at the full Pb+Pb minimum bias interaction rate delivered by the LHC. A new point-to-point readout system for the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) of ALICE has been developed, to replace the legacy readout bus, that essentially accomplishes this goal, and is being installed during the …
Bremsstrahlung and the underlying event structure

Abstract In this talk we address the problem of the structure of the underlying event and its dependence upon a specific trigger. Generally speaking, events selected without any special trigger, like the minimum bias events, need not have the same characteristics as those selected by the jet trigger or through the W and Z-boson selection criteria. We use perturbative QCD in order to unfold part of the structure. In particular we concentrate on the contribution to the underlying event structure which comes from initial state bremsstrahlung. Method specific Cholesky decomposition : Coulomb and exchange energies

We present a novel approach to the calculation of the Coulomb and exchange contributions to the total electronic energy in self consistent field and density functional theory. The numerical procedure is based on the Cholesky decomposition and involves decomposition of specific Hadamard product matrices that enter the energy expression. In this way, we determine an auxiliary basis and obtain a dramatic reduction in size as compared to the resolution of identity (RI) method. Although the auxiliary basis is determined from the energy expression, we have complete control of the errors in the gradient or Fock matrix. Time-optimal selective pulses of two uncoupled spin-1/2 particles

We investigate the time-optimal solution of the selective control of two uncoupled spin 1/2 particles. Using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we derive the global time-optimal pulses for two spins with different offsets. We show that the Pontryagin Hamiltonian can be written as a one-dimensional effective Hamiltonian. The optimal fields can be expressed analytically in terms of elliptic integrals. The time-optimal control problem is solved for the selective inversion and excitation processes. A bifurcation in the structure of the control fields occurs for a specific offset threshold. Time-optimal control of SU(2) quantum operations

We propose an analysis of the time-optimal control of SU(2) quantum operations. By using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we show how to determine the optimal trajectory reaching a given target state. Explicit analytical solutions are given for two specific examples. We discuss the role of the detuning in the construction of the optimal synthesis.
Measurement of damping and temperature: Precision bounds in Gaussian dissipative channels

We present a comprehensive analysis of the performance of different classes of Gaussian states in the estimation of Gaussian phase-insensitive dissipative channels. In particular, we investigate the optimal estimation of the damping constant and reservoir temperature. We show that, for two-mode squeezed vacuum probe states, the quantum-limited accuracy of both parameters can be achieved simultaneously. Moreover, we show that for both parameters two-mode squeezed vacuum states are more efficient than either coherent, thermal or single-mode squeezed states. On the Multifractal Character of the Lorenz Attractor

A detailed analysis of the Lorenz attractor in connection with generalized dimensions is presented in this work. Different methods have been employed to estimate these dimensions. Two of them are of standard type. A new method, based on the minimal spanning tree of the point distribution, is extensively tested in this work. It turns out that the Lorenz attractor is very appropriate for being analyzed through this technique, which produces a very clean estimate of the extrema scaling indices α min and α max . The production of mesons containing strange quarks (KS, φ) and both singly and doubly strange baryons ( , , and − + +) are measured at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at √ s = 0.9 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The results are obtained from the analysis of about 250 k minimum bias events recorded in 2009. Measurements of yields (dN/dy) and transverse momentum spectra at mid-rapidity for inelastic pp collisions are presented. For mesons, we report yields (〈dN/dy〉) of 0.184 ± 0.002(stat.) ± 0.006(syst.) for KS and 0.021 ± 0.004(stat.) ± 0.003(syst.) for φ. Bollard is a vital component of mooring system. It is the anchor point for mooring ropes to be fixed in order to secure the vessel or ship. Statistical Analysis of a Method to Predict Drug–Polymer Miscibility

In this study, a method proposed to predict drug-polymer miscibility from differential scanning calorimetry measurements was subjected to statistical analysis. The method is relatively fast and inexpensive and has gained popularity as a result of the increasing interest in the formulation of drugs as amorphous solid dispersions. However, it does not include a standard statistical assessment of the experimental uncertainty by means of a confidence interval.
