Abstract Nine psychiatrically disturbed women were studied, variously suffering from the effects of anorexia nervosa, vomiting, and abuse of diuretics and purgatives. Each had more than one source of electrolyte depletion, and each deliberately concealed at least one of these. All were potassium-depleted, and in all but one sodium depletion was also evident. During exacerbations plasma-renin concentration was raised, secretion-rate and plasma concentration of aldosterone were increased, and the metabolic clearance of aldosterone was diminished. UNLABELLED With the development of new computer-assisted target-controlled infusion (TCI) systems and the availability of short-acting anesthetics, total IV anesthesia (TIVA) has become increasingly popular. The aim of this study was to compare costs of TCI-based anesthesia with two standard anesthesia regimens. Sixty patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly divided into three groups. The increased risk of cholelithiasis during intake of oral contraceptives may be due to estrogen-induced saturation of the bile with cholesterol. In a randomized, prospective, crossed-over double-blind study 20 healthy women after roentgenological exclusion of gall-stones received either 1.0 mg of norethindrone acetate and 50 microgram ethinyl estradiol daily - as usual in oral contraception - for 21 days with 7 days of placebo treatment in each cycle or one fifth of this hormone dose in form of a continuous daily medication. Este artículo presenta un estudio sobre las terminaciones -i/-is y -e/-es en la comunidad de habla LGTBI. La motivación de esta investigación viene de la representación del género no binario en la lengua española, marcado recientemente por las terminaciones en -e, que además es utilizado para crear un plural inclusivo que evite el masculino genérico. En la misma línea, se han detectado usos, dentro de la comunidad de habla LGTBI, de otro grupo de terminaciones (-i/-is) que parecen anular la distinción de género. Abstract 1. The body weight, plumage, insulation, oxygen consumption and body lipids were studied seasonally in the house sparrow, Passer domesticus L. 2. The weights of body and plumage were greater in autumn and winter than in summer. 3. The insulative property of the plumage was better in autumn and winter birds than in summer birds. 4. The oxygen consumption of young birds was higher than that of plucked and adult birds. 5. The amount of subcutaneous depot fat tissue and its lipid content was greatest in autumn. Subtype-Specific Desensitization of Human Endothelin ETA and ETB Receptors Reflects Differential Receptor Phosphorylation

Endothelins regulate blood pressure in mammals through G protein-coupled receptors. Two receptor subtypes, ETA and ETB, exist which differ by their agonist profiles. Here we show subtype-specific differences in the inactivation of these endothelin receptors. Using a modified inositol phosphate accumulation assay, we found that stimulation of ETA by endothelin-1 results in sustained activation of the subtype, retaining >30% of its initial activity even 20 min after agonist administration, whereas the ETB rapidly deactivated after agonist stimulation, losing >80% of its initial activity within 5 min after endothelin application. Abstract 1. 1. Activities of 10 enzymes and accumulation of two metabolites under experimental hypoxia were investigated in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis . 2. 2. Pyruvate kinase (PK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malic enzyme (ME), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and fumarase (FUM) activities showed great increase at low oxygen levels. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity was not detected. 3. 3.
