Integral functions of marine vertebrates in the ocean carbon cycle and climate change mitigation

2021

Summary In the last decade, the ocean has absorbed a quarter of the Earth’s greenhouse gas emissions through the carbon (C) cycle, a naturally occurring process. Aspects of the ocean C cycle are now being incorporated into climate change mitigation and adaptation plans. Currently, too little is known about marine vertebrate C functions for their inclusion in policies. Fortunately, marine vertebrate biology, behavior, and ecology through the lens of C and nutrient cycling and flux is an emerging area of research that is rich in existing data. This review uses literature and trusted data sources to describe marine vertebrate C interactions, provides quantification where possible, and highligh…

High Order Textural Classification of Two SAR ERS Images on Mount Cameroon

2006

Abstract Many researchers have demonstrated that textural data increase the precision of a classification when they are combined with level of grey information. However, the calculation of textural parameters of order two is often too long in a computer. The problem is more complex when one must compute higher order textural parameters, which however can considerably improve the precision of a classification. This work is based on statistical methods of order two and three for the calculation of textural parameters [Akono et al., 2003]. In this work, we suggest a new method of calculation of textural parameters, which is more general, not limiting itself only on order two or three, but whic…

Crossover, double-blind clinical trial comparing almotriptan and ergotamine plus caffeine for acute migraine therapy

2007

In this randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial, adult patients treated two migraine attacks: one with almotriptan 12.5 mg and the other with ergotamine 2 mg plus caffeine 200 mg. Treatment with almotriptan was associated with a significantly greater proportion of patients achieving 2-h pain free (20.9% vs. 13.7%; P < 0.05) and 2-h pain relief (57.7% vs. 44.5%; P < 0.01) compared with ergotamine plus caffeine therapy; significant differences were not seen at 1 h. Rates for sustained pain free and sustained pain free plus no adverse events (AEs) also were significantly greater after almotriptan treatment than after the use of ergotamine plus caffeine (P < 0.05). Almotriptan was as…

Characterization of waxes used in pictorial artworks according to their relative amount of fatty acids and hydrocarbons by gas chromatography.

2005

A study attempted to characterize natural waxes used in pictorial works of art was carried out by means of gas chromatography. The analytical treatment requires prior hydrolysis of the waxes to release the fatty acids (FA) (myristic (myr), palmitic (pal), oleic (ole), stearic (ste), araquidic (ara), behenic (beh), lignoceric (lig), cerotic (cer)) from the main esters of the waxes. The formation of volatile derivatives of the fatty acids was carried out by derivatization with ethyl choroformate (ECF). This derivatization reagent was chosen due to the speed, safety and quantitativity of the reaction. The analyzed hydrocarbons were n-eicosane, n-heneicosane, n-docosane, n-tricosane, n-tetracos…

On the tautomerization process of glycine in aqueous solution

2000

The experimental activation energy for the tautomerization of glycine zwitterion neutral form has been reported to be 14.6 kcalrmol. It has been generally assumed that this energy barrier is needed for proton transfer to occur. However, previous theoretical results do not support this interpretation. In the present work, we examine this question using density functional calculations, extended basis sets and a polarizable continuum solvent model. Our results suggest that the limiting step for the tautomerization process corresponds basically to H-atom reorientation in the -COOH group. This could be a general feature in the tautomerization of amino acids. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ…

Separation of homologues and isomers of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates by capillary electrophoresis with sodium dodecyl sulfate, carboxylic acids and …

2003

The ability of several anionic compounds, including carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and other bile salts, to separate the C(10)-C(13) homologues and the corresponding 20 positional isomers of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) by capillary electrophoresis was studied. Up to 19 peaks and a shoulder were observed with a background electrolyte (BGE) containing 10 mM phosphate (pH 6.8), 30% acetonitrile and 40 mM SDS, and 18 peaks were obtained with a BGE containing 10 mM borate (pH 9), 40% ethanol and 40 mM palmitic acid (PA). Resolution increased with the alkyl chain length of the carboxylic acid. Dicarboxylic acids with a short …

Limiting concepts in extensional flow

1975

A characteristic feature of extensional flows is their potential capability of determining a stable, oriented structure in liquid materials containing elongated particles. With reference to flexible linear macromolecules, either in solution or as polymer melts, the limiting conditions under which such an oriented structure is actually possible are critically reviewed. It is seen that orientation can be obtained either when entanglements are present, i.e. when the polymer molecules form some sort of network, or, if the molecules behave entirely individually, only under very special circumstances. Further, if the objective is the “freezing” of the oriented structure in a partly crystalline, h…

Response to Comment on “Characterizing the N-Terminal Processing Motif of MHC Class I Ligands”

2008

The possibility that ERAAP plays a role in limiting the presentation of peptides derived from signal peptides may be tempting from an immunologist’s view. In eukaryotic cells, signal peptides have a mean length of 22 amino acids and are removed by signal peptide peptidases from the N terminus of

A radical mechanism is proposed for the formation of the 1,2-polymer 2 in the “spontaneous” polymerization of 4-vinylpyridinium salts 4-VP.HX (X=NO3, ClO4, HSO4, I) in aqueous solution on the basis of strong inhibition by oxygen and other radical inhibitors. Quantitative investigation of the influence of oxygen on the formation of the 1,2-polymer allowed the derivation of a formal kinetic scheme for the initiation and polymerization steps which is consistent with a free radical mechanism. Dependence of the average molecular weight of 2 on monomer concentration is in agreement with this model. Dependence of the inhibition time on the oxygen concentration as well as an acceleration of the fin…
