Abstract The individual cytotoxicity of cadmium chloride, iron sulphate and chromium nitrate has been investigated by using the freshwater ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis. The metabolic enzymes and antioxidant defense biomarkers were assessed. The results obtained reveal that their metal salts have perturbed the physiology and morphology of T. pyriformis. Also, the biomarkers assessed were sensitive to the presence of metal salts and this sensitivity was metal salt and dose dependant. To estimate the impact of their metal salts on mitochondria, we studied their effects in vivo and in vitro on the d -β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) (EC 1.1.1.30) inner mitochondrial membrane enzyme. Intrinsic apoptosis is orchestrated by a group of proteins that mediate the coordinated disruption of mitochondrial membranes. Bax is a multi-domain protein that, upon activation, disrupts the integrity of the mitochondrial outer membrane by forming pores. We strategically introduced glutamic acids into a short sequence of the Bax protein that constitutively creates membrane pores. The resulting BaxE5 peptide efficiently permeabilizes membranes at acidic pH, showing low permeabilization at neutral pH. It is generally assumed that turnover of the keratin filament system occurs by exchange of subunits along its entire length throughout the cytoplasm. We now present evidence that a circumscribed submembranous compartment is actually the main site for network replenishment. The fatty acid composition of the seed oils of six pomegranate (Punica granatum L) cultivars was qualitatively and quantitatively determined by gas chromatography. The seeds contained oil in the range 51-152 mg kg -1 dry matter. Intervarietal differences in fatty acid composition were demonstrated (fatty acid esters as % (w/w) total fatty acid esters. Sour varieties had the highest while sour-sweet varieties had the lowest oil content. Eleven fatty acids were identified. In all varieties, the predominant fatty acids were linoleic (25.2-38.6%) and oleic acid (24.8-35.5%) followed by palmitic (18.2-22.6%), stearic (6.9-10.4%) and linolenic acid (0.6-9.9%). Summary Mitochondria were isolated and roughly purified from bean seedlings (phaseolus vulgaris) treated with different red light (660 nm) irradiation programmes. Etiolated seedlings were irradiated for short terms or grown in red light. The mitochondria from differently treated seedlings were analysed for their phospholipid and fatty acid patterns. The mitochondrial phospholipid patterns from green and etiolated seedlings were rather similar. This was also valid for the fatty acids from the phospholipid fraction whereas the fatty acid patterns of the glycolipids showed differences.
