PurposeAims to present recent activities in numerical modeling of cold crucible melting process.Design/methodology/approach3D numerical analysis was used for electromagnetic problem and 3D large eddy simulation (LES) method was applied for fluid flow modeling.FindingsThe comparative modeling shows, that higher H/D ratio of the melt is more efficient when total power consumption is considered, but this advantage is held back by higher heat losses through the crucible walls. Prediction of flow fields in a dual-impeller stirred vessel

Numerical simulations were connected for the flow field in a baffled tank stirred by a dual Rushton impeller. For this geometry, LDV measurements show a characteristic dependence of the flow patterns upon the position of the impellers. Two advanced modeling approaches were tested. Abstract The main feature of unbaffled stirred tanks is the highly swirling liquid motion, which leads to the formation of a central vortex on the liquid free surface, when the vessel is operated without top-cover (Uncovered Unbaffled Stirred Tanks, UUST). Sound source separation techniques are known to be very useful in many applications. High fidelity and audio oriented applications are a challenging issue in this topic, however, existing algorithms are far from performing with such a high quality. In this paper, a subjective and objective evaluation are carried out for several algorithms designed for dealing with stereo music mixtures. The performance of these algorithms applied to acoustic scene resynthesis in a Wave Field Synthesis system is discussed.

Phytoplankton assemblages in reservoirs: Is it chemical or physical constraints which regulate their structure?

Data on phytoplankton assemblages and the correspondent environmental variables, collected in a limnological investigation carried out on 21 Sicilian reservoirs between 1987 and 1988, were ordered to clarify which physical (light availability, mixing depth), chemical (nutrient availability) and biological (grazing pressure) parameters modulate the structure of the assemblages.
