Quantitative comparison of mean field mixing laws for conductivity and dielectric constants of porous media

2003

Abstract Exact numerical solution of the electrostatic disordered potential problem is carried out for four fully discretized three-dimensional experimental reconstructions of sedimentary rocks. The measured effective macroscopic dielectric constants and electrical conductivities are compared with parameter-free predictions from several mean field type theories. All these theories give agreeable results for low contrast between the media. Predictions from local porosity theory, however, match for the entire range of contrast.

An Adaptive Parallel Tempering Algorithm

2013

Parallel tempering is a generic Markov chainMonteCarlo samplingmethod which allows good mixing with multimodal target distributions, where conventionalMetropolis- Hastings algorithms often fail. The mixing properties of the sampler depend strongly on the choice of tuning parameters, such as the temperature schedule and the proposal distribution used for local exploration. We propose an adaptive algorithm with fixed number of temperatures which tunes both the temperature schedule and the parameters of the random-walk Metropolis kernel automatically. We prove the convergence of the adaptation and a strong law of large numbers for the algorithm under general conditions. We also prove as a side…

Generalised Maxwell-Garnett equation: application to electrical and chemical transport.

2006

In this paper we discuss the implementation of different equilibrium concentrations in each of the phases into the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium formula for diffusion in heterogeneous media. We put the derivation given by Kalnin et al., J. Phys. Chem. Solids, 2002, 63, 449, on safer grounds and extend it to non-dilute carrier concentrations. The relation to Maxwell’s mixing rule is also elaborated. It is shown that the formula can not only successfully be applied to conductivity problems but also to describe steady state chemical diffusion in heterogeneous media such as polycrystalline samples. The comparison with the brick layer model corroborates these points but also shows that—in the…

The Second APOKASC Catalog: The Empirical Approach

2018

We present a catalog of stellar properties for a large sample of 6676 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and \textit{Kepler} asteroseismic data analyzed using five independent techniques. Our data includes evolutionary state, surface gravity, mean density, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them. We employ a new empirical approach for combining asteroseismic measurements from different methods, calibrating the inferred stellar parameters, and estimating uncertainties. With high statistical significance, we find that asteroseismic parameters inferred from the different pipelines have systematic offsets that are not removed b…

Implementation of a global P-recovery system in urban wastewater treatment plants

2019

[EN] Current wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) paradigm is moving towards the so-called water resource recovery facilities in which sewage is considered a source of valuable resources. In particular, urban WWTPs are crucial systems to enhance phosphorus (P) recycling. This paper evaluates the implementation of a P-recovery system in Calahorra WWTP combining the operation of a new sludge line configuration coupled to a struvite crystallisation reactor at demonstration-scale. This new configuration consisted in the elutriation in the gravity thickener of the mixed sludge contained in the mixing chamber in order to reduce the phosphate load to the anaerobic digestion. The results indicated t…

Fe-periclase reactivity at Earth's lower mantle conditions: Ab-initio geochemical modelling

2017

Intrinsic and extrinsic stability of the (Mg, Fe) O solid mixture in the Fe-Mg-Si-O system at high P, T conditions relevant to the Earth's mantle is investigated by the combination of quantum mechanical calculations (Hartree-26 Fock/DFT hybrid scheme), cluster expansion techniques and statistical thermodynamics. Iron in the (Mg, Fe) O binary mixture is assumed to be either in the low spin (LS) or in the high spin (HS) state. Un-mixing at solid state is observed only for the LS condition in the 23-42 GPa pressure range, whereas HS does not give rise to un-mixing. LS (Mg, Fe) O un-mixings are shown to be able to incorporate iron by subsolidus reactions with a reservoir of a virtual bridgmanit…

Surface segregation trends in transition metal alloys

2013

In this work, we revisit the problem of predicting the surface segregation trends in binary transition metal alloys from the knowledge of the basic features of the pure component $d$-band electronic structure within tight-binding approximation. In contrast to previous trend studies, the present one includes, within the fourth-moment approximation (FMA) of the tight-binding scheme, both the difference in the average band energies (diagonal disorder) and the difference in the band widths (off-diagonal disorder) of the two components. We show that treating on the same footing these two effects is essential for a correct prediction of surface segregation. The presented study, giving a natural l…

Counter-propagating frequency mixing with Terahertz waves in diamond

2013

Frequency conversion by means of Kerr nonlinearity is one of the most common and exploited nonlinear optical processes in the UV, visible, IR, and mid-IR spectral regions. Here we show that wave mixing of an optical field and a terahertz wave can be achieved in diamond, resulting in the frequency conversion of the terahertz radiation either by sum- or difference-frequency generation. In the latter case, we show that this process is phase matched and most efficient in a counterpropagating geometry.
