The cloud-point temperatures (T-cl's) of trans-decahydronaphthalene(TD)/polystyrene (PS, (M) over bar (w) = 270 000) solutions were determined by light scattering measurements over a range of temperatures (1-16degreesC), pressures (100-900 bar), and compositions (4.2-21.6 vol.-% polymer). The system phase separates upon cooling and T-cl was found to increase with rising pressure for constant composition. In the absence of special effects, this finding indicates positive excess volume for the mixing. Cloud screening and multitemporal unmixing of MERIS FR data

The operational use of MERIS images can be hampered by the presence of clouds. This work presents a cloud screening algorithm that takes advantage of the high spectral and radiometric resolutions of MERIS and the specific location of some of its bands to increase the cloud detection accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides a per-pixel probabilistic map of cloud abundance rather than a binary cloud presence flag. Observations of high concentrations of I2and IO in coastal air supporting iodine-oxide driven coastal new particle formation

[1] Theoretical studies have predicted that concentrations of gaseous I2 and IO of the order of 80–100 ppt and 40–50 ppt, respectively, are required in coastal air to account for photochemically-driven coastal new-particle formation events to occur. However, measurements reported to date (i.e., ∼20 ppt I2, ≤ 10 ppt IO) have not supported the required model predictions. Here, we present measurements of high concentrations of I2 and IO in N.E. Atlantic marine air on the west coast of Ireland. The maximum mixing ratios of daytime I2 and IO over the seaweed beds during low tide were 302 ppt and 35 ppt, respectively. We show experimentally a new type of parametric instability associated with the original phenomenon of beam self-cleaning in multimode fibers. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

We demonstrate the nonlinear condensation of classical optical waves. The condensation is observed directly, as a function of nonlinearity and wave kinetic energy, in a self-defocusing photorefractive crystal.
Enthalpy of Solution of Nonionic Solutes in Organized Systems

The standard enthalpies of solution of alcohols in micellar solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide were obtained by direct measurements and by enthalpies of mixing. The observed trends were analyzed with a previously reported model. From the resulting equations, the distribution constant, standard enthalpy of transfer from aqueous to the micellar phase and the standard enthalpy of solution in micellar phase can be calculated at the same time using a linear least-squares analysis. The model seems to hold well also in the case of short chain surfactants and microheterogeneities in spite of the fact that the micellization equilibrium is treated as a pseudo-phase transition.
Phase transitions in nonadditive hard disc systems: a Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo Study

we study the properties of a model fluid in two dimensions with Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) techniques, in particular we analyze the entropy-driven phase separation in case of a nonadditive symmetric hard disc fluid. By a combination of GEMC with finite size scaling techniques we locate the critical line of nonadditivities as a function of the system density, which separates the mixing/demixing regions and compare with a simple analytical approximation.
