Genetic and morphological differentiation ofDikerogammarusinvaders and their invasion history in Central Europe
2002
SUMMARY 1. Biological invasions often involve close taxonomic relatives either as native/invader pairs or as invader/invader pairs. Precise identification and differentiation of species is therefore of paramount importance to reconstruct the invasion history. Genetic studies are indispensable in the case of morphologically conservative taxonomic groups. 2. We analysed the Pontocaspian freshwater amphipods Dikerogammarus that have successfully invaded the benthos of large Central European rivers. Taxonomic uncertainties were clarified by phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial 16S and COI genes. The three-way partitioning of allozyme genotypes in a syntopic population further corroborated the…
Quantification of denitrifying bacteria in soils by nirK gene targeted real-time PCR.
2004
Abstract Denitrification, the reduction of nitrate to nitrous oxide or dinitrogen, is the major biological mechanism by which fixed nitrogen returns to the atmosphere from soil and water. Microorganisms capable of denitrification are widely distributed in the environment but little is known about their abundance since quantification is performed using fastidious and time-consuming MPN-based approaches. We used real-time PCR to quantify the denitrifying nitrite reductase gene (nirK), a key enzyme of the denitrifying pathway catalyzing the reduction of soluble nitrogen oxide to gaseous form. The real-time PCR assay was linear over 7 orders of magnitude and sensitive down to 102 copies by assa…
Metamorphic evolution and zircon geochronology of early Proterozoic granulites in the Aravalli Mountains of northwestern India
2005
Granulites including a charnockite suite, mafic granulites, pelitic granulites, metanorite dykes and their retrograde varieties occur as discontinuous shear zone-bounded bodies within the Archaean basement comprising a granite gneiss–amphibolite–metasedimentary rock association in the central part of the Aravalli Mountains, northwest India. The entire suite, named the Sandmata Complex, preserves a complex history of tectonothermal evolution. Except for their strongly foliated margins, the granulite bodies are largely massive. Partial melting in the ‘country rocks’ led to the development of migmatite gneisses close to the contact of the granulite, a feature not as common in the rocks further…
Characterization of an early metamorphic stage through inclusions in zircon of a diamondiferous quartzofeldspathic rock from the Erzgebirge, Germany
2003
About 1000 zircon grains from a diamondiferous quartzofeldspathic rock of the Saxonian Erzgebirge were investigated for inclusions using optical microscopy and confocal laser-Raman spectroscopy. Cathodoluminescence imagery was applied to characterize the growth zone of zircon where the inclusions occurred. The most abundant inclusion minerals are microdiamonds. Coesite was not detected. However, garnet and jadeite occur as rare inclusions in zircon cores where diamonds are lacking. Jadeite was detected for the first time in quartzofeldspathic rocks from the crystalline complex of the Erzgebirge. The compositions of the pristine garnets in the zircons are similar to those of core areas of mi…
Development of a database for the rapid and accurate routine identification of Achromobacter species by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-t…
2019
International audience; Objectives: Achromobacter spp. are emerging pathogens in respiratory samples from cystic fibrosis patients. The current reference methods (nrdA-sequencing or multilocus sequence typing) can identify 18 species which are often misidentified by conventional techniques as A. xylosoxidans. A few studies have suggested that matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) provides accurate identification of the genus but not of species. The aims of this study were (a) to generate a database for MALDI-TOF/MS Bruker including the 18 species, (b) to evaluate the suitability of the database for routine laboratory identification, and …

Influence of the suspension of continued treatment with flurazepam and amobarbital on two discrimination learning schedules.
1977
The authors have studied the effect of the suspension of chronic treatment with flurazepam and amobarbital on the operant behavior of rats that for the first time were in the presence of two fixed-interval discrimination schedules. With the sound discrimination schedule, the responses emitted by the treated animals had characteristics similar to those of control animals. With the temporal discrimination schedule, though it is not possible to distinguish between learning rates, modifications in the intensity of the effect (increases in lever pressing) indicate that, considering the doses, the action of flurazepam is slight and that of amobarbital clear and statistically significant.
Determination of amobarbital and secobarbital in plasma samples using micellar liquid chromatography
2000
A new liquid chromatographic procedure for the determination of amobarbital and secobarbital in plasma samples is proposed. The method uses a Spherisorb octadecylsilane ODS-2 C18 analytical column, a guard column of similar characteristics and 0.04 M CTAB solution buffered at pH 7.5 containing 3% 1-propanol as micellar mobile phase. The UV detection was carried out at 250 nm. Butabarbital was used as internal standard. Plasma samples preparation only required adequate dilution with the mobile phase before injection into the chromatographic system. The limits of detection were 0.2 and 0.4 mg/L for amobarbital and secobarbital, respectively. The proposed method allows the determination of amo…
Biocoenosis and induration of freshwaterRivulariastromatolites in a temperate climate
1997
Freshwater Rivularia haematites (D.C.) Agardh and Rivularia biasolettiana Menegh‐ini stromatolites were collected from the Plateau de Langres and Lac d'Annecy (France) and investigated experimentally. In addition to cyanobacteria, the community of organisms consists of Desmococcus (green algae) and many bacteria including Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Pseudomonas diminuta for Rivularia haematites, and Achromobacter group B and Pseudomonas acidovorans for Rivularia biasolettiana. Stromatolite induration is not confined to calcification and may locally exhibit apatite or gypsum crystals, with the latter appearing only in cultures exposed to light. The effect of certain microorganisms of the b…
Role of AxyZ Transcriptional Regulator in Overproduction of AxyXY-OprZ Multidrug Efflux System in Achromobacter Species Mutants Selected by Tobramycin
2017
ABSTRACT AxyXY-OprZ is an RND-type efflux system that confers innate aminoglycoside resistance to Achromobacter spp. We investigated here a putative TetR family transcriptional regulator encoded by the axyZ gene located upstream of axyXY-oprZ . An in-frame axyZ gene deletion assay led to increased MICs of antibiotic substrates of the efflux system, including aminoglycosides, cefepime, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and erythromycin, indicating that the product of axyZ negatively regulates expression of axyXY-oprZ . Moreover, we identified an amino acid substitution at position 29 of AxyZ (V29G) in a clinical Achromobacter strain that occurred during the course of chronic respiratory tract…
