Major autohemotherapy as a treatment modality for alveolar osteitis

2018

Purpose.
Alveolar osteitis is the most common post-odontectomy complication. Although blood clot disintegration is known to be the cause of the condition, an agreement is lacking regarding a treatment of choice. The aim of the current study therefore was to evaluate major autohemotherapy as one treatment method.

 Patients and Methods.
A total of 183 patients were categorized into 4 groups (I, II, III, and IV) according to pain severity (mild, moderate, severe, or agonizing, respectively). Major autohemotherapy was performed for all patients by withdrawing 225mL of patient's blood and mixing them with 225mL of Oxygen-Ozone gas (where Ozone concentration was 50µg/mL ga…

Multimodality imaging approach to paradoxical embolism: a cauliflower mass on the Eustachian valve

2020

The Eustachian valve was first described by Bartolomeo Eustachio (Italian anatomist) at 1552. It is an embryological remnant of the inferior vena cava valve that prenatally directs the oxygenated blood from inferior vena cava across the patent foramen ovale (PFO) into systemic circulation. Generally, following birth, after the closure of the foramen ovale it gradually regresses and not have a specific function, but it may persist in some patients as a floating membrane in the right atrium (RA), a nonpathological functionless structure.1 The prevalence of Eustachian valve in the normal population is unknown. Generally, it is an incidental finding without any significant pathophysiological co…

Common and uncommon pitfalls in pancreatic imaging: it is not always cancer.

2015

Despite advances in multimodality imaging of pancreas, there is still overlap between imaging findings of several pancreatic/peripancreatic disease processes. Pancreatic and peripancreatic non-neoplastic entities may mimic primary pancreatic neoplasms on ultrasound, CT, and MRI. On the other hand, primary pancreatic cancer may be overlooked on imaging because of technical and inherent factors. The purpose of this pictorial review is to describe and illustrate pancreatic imaging pitfalls and highlight the basic radiological features for proper differential diagnosis.

Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the uterus and the breast: report of three cases

1995

The authors describe one case of a rare primitive non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the uterus, and two cases of primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the breast. Histologically, the uterine lymphoma, although clinically confined to the uterus, was a diffuse large cell lymphoma, group G according to the Working formulation for Clinical Usage. The two cases of breast lymphoma were a centrocytic-centroblastic and a lymphoplasmocytoid non-Hodgkin lymphoma, respectively. All cases were initally treated with radical surgery plus radiotherapy, but the first patient showed an early recurrence at distant sites, which required systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy. The patient with uterine non-Hodgkin lymphoma received a…

Cytoreductive surgery and mitomycin C hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy with CO2 recirculation (HIPEC-CO2) for colorectal cancer peritoneal m…

2021

Peritoneal dissemination from colorectal cancer (CRC) has long been associated with unfavorable prognosis. However, in the last decades, the combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) was able to obtain up to 30% 5-year survival rate in selected centers. Despite the wide diffusion of CRS and HIPEC, until now, there are no clear recommendations on the drug of choice for HIPEC nor its technique, and safety and efficacy data of HIPEC regimens and techniques are lacking. We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 26 CRS and mitomycin C HIPEC with CO2 recirculation (HIPEC-CO2) for CRC peritoneal metastasis…

Effects of hormone replacement therapy and high-impact physical exercise on skeletal muscle in post-menopausal women: a randomized placebo-controlled…

2001

An age-related decline in muscle performance is a known risk factor for falling, fracture and disability. In women, a clear deterioration is observed from early menopause. The effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in preserving muscle performance is, however, unclear. This trial examined the effects of a 12-month HRT and high-impact physical exercise regimen on skeletal muscle in women in early menopause. A total of 80 women aged 50–57 years were assigned randomly to one of four groups: exercise (Ex), HRT, exercise+HRT (ExHRT) and control (Co). The exercise groups participated in a high-impact training programme. The administration of HRT (oestradiol/noretisterone acetate) or placebo …

Medications between psychiatric and addictive disorders

2016

International audience; Introduction : Many epidemiological studies have revealed a frequent co-occurrence of psychiatric and substance use disorders. The term used in the literature to refer to this co-occurrence is dual diagnosis. The high prevalence of dual diagnosis has led physicians to observe the effects of medication prescribed to treat psychiatric disorders on the co-occurring substance use disorder and vice versa. The concept of medications between psychiatric and addictive disorders stems from these clinical observations, alongside which, however, it has developed from the observation that both psychiatric and substance use disorders share common neurobiological pathways and trig…
