Lexical and conceptual components of stem completion priming in patients with Alzheimer's disease
1999
This study evaluated the hypothesis of dissociation between normal lexical but deficient conceptual repetition priming in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). For this purpose, we administered to patients with AD and age-matched normal controls the Stem Completion task. In Experiment 1, the level of word processing during study was manipulated by requiring subjects to count vowels (graphemic condition) or generate meanings (semantic condition) of target words. In Experiment 2, the presentation modality was varied during the study to obtain an intramodal and crossmodal repetition priming. Probably due to a floor effect of performance in the graphemic condition, in Experiment 1, AD patient…
Comparison of conventional and dense dispersion managed systems for 160 Gb/s transmissions
2006
International audience; In this paper, we carry out, by numerical simulations and experiments on recirculating loop.. a comparative analysis of the performances of two types of dispersion management techniques for 160 Gb/s transmission systems, which correspond to short-period dispersion maps (dense dispersion management) and long-period dispersion maps (conventional dispersion management), respectively. We show that the dense dispersion management system suffers performance degradation by the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and fiber splicing losses, in a more dramatic manner than in the system with long-period map. We experimentally find that, at constant PMD, dense dispersi…
In-fiber time-resolved acousto-optics
2014
Time-resolved in-fiber acousto-optics permit the measurement of sub-ppm perturbations of the modal dispersion curves along sections of fiber exceeding 1 m long, with a spatial resolution in the order of few cm.
Designing a photonic crystal fibre with flattened chromatic dispersion
1999
Using a full-vector modal method, the authors have identified a region of nearly zero flattened chromatic dispersion in a specially designed photonic crystal fibre. The approach permits an accurate control of the dispersion features of these fibres in terms of their structural parameters.
Parabolic pulse generation with active or passive dispersion decreasing optical fibers
2007
International audience; We experimentally demonstrate the possibility to generate parabolic pulses via a single dispersion decreasing optical fiber with normal dispersion. We numerically and experimentally investigate the influence of the dispersion profile, and we show that a hybrid configuration combining dispersion decrease and gain has several benefits on the parabolic generated pulses.
Sloped-wall thin-film photonic crystal waveguides
2005
The effect of the slope of the groove walls in the behavior of thin-film one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides is extensively studied. In this respect, we point out its influence on the modal dispersion relations and then on the bandgap structure in general. Likewise, we also prove the lack of accuracy in the evaluation of the bandgap edges when material dispersion is ignored. The extreme importance of both facts, the wall slope and the material dispersion, in the analysis and design of realistic photonic crystal devices is emphasized. In particular, we exploit the wall slope as a new design parameter. By suitably choosing the value of the above parameter, sloped-wall photonic crystal…
Control of the chromatic dispersion of photonic crystal fibers for supercontinuum and photon pairs generation
2011
The interplay between chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects is crucial for an efficient exploitation of non linear propagation in photonic crystal fibers (PCF). Once a PCF preform has been prepared, changing the parameters that control the fabrication process it is possible to adjust the dispersion properties of the fiber. In addition, it is particularly useful to develop postprocessing techniques that enable a fine adjustment of the dispersion along a section of PCF. The tapering of PCF, using a fusion and pulling technique, has been established as a rather useful technique to engineer the dispersion properties along tens of centimeters. Some of our recent experiments demonstrate that…
Designing the properties of dispersion-flattened photonic crystal fibers
2001
We present a systematic study of group-velocity-dispersion properties in photonic crystal fibers (PCF's). This analysis includes a thorough description of the dependence of the fiber geometrical dispersion on the structural parameters of a PCF. The interplay between material dispersion and geometrical dispersion allows us to established a well-defined procedure to design specific predetermined dispersion profiles. We focus on flattened, or even ultraflattened, dispersion behaviors both in the telecommunication window (around 1.55 microm) and in the Ti-Za laser wavelength range (around 0.8 microm}. We show the different possibilities of obtaining normal, anomalous, and zero dispersion curves…
Acousto-Optic Interaction for Accurate Two-Mode Optical Fibers Characterization
2016
Accurate characterization of two-mode fibers by acousto-optic interaction is reported. Difference of modal index, group delay, and dispersion between the guided modes is obtained. Properties of the vector modes comprising the LP11 mode are investigated.
Dissipative soliton resonance in a full polarization-maintaining fiber ring laser at different values of dispersion
2016
We investigated the dissipative solitons resonance in an ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser in which all the elements are polarization maintaining (PM). A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror was used as a mode-locker. The cavity included a normal dispersion single-mode fiber (SMF) and an anomalous dispersion photonic crystal fiber. The change of the length of the PM SMF allows the variation of the net-normal dispersion of the cavity in the range from 0.022 ps2 to 0.262 ps2. As the absolute value of the net-normal dispersion increases from 0.022 ps2 to 0.21 ps2, a square-shaped single pulse transformed to a single right-angle trapezoid-shaped pulse, and, at the dispersion of 0.262 ps2, to …
