2021
The subject of children at the table is related to that of conviviality on two levels. Firstly, at the level of the acquisition of social rules concerning the ways of being at the table, the codes of the meal, the recognition of appropriate behaviour in different contexts (at home, outside, formal, informal, etc.), in short, the "have to". Secondly, at the level of the acquisition of a general know-how, represented by all the somatic behaviours necessary for the consumption of the meal: learning to chew solid food, to drink from a glass, to use cutlery, to handle plates, bowls, soup plates, and so on. In this essay, we will analyse table objects designed for children (glasses, cutlery, plat…
“Dear Young People, don’t vote”. Seniors in political advertisements: irony and/or legitimation
2019
The widespread representation of older people in popular culture as passive and inert has been challenged in a range of recent studies and publications (Nussbaum / Coupland 2004, Caprara et al. 2013). In view of the increasing number of older adults in today’s society, the notion of aging has received significant attention in the public sphere where common assumptions and stereotypes are challenged and potential scenarios are presented. As it has been discussed from different academic perspectives over the past twenty years, older people’s collective condition is undergoing important sociological and cultural changes, making the elderly - among other things - an enticing political reservoir…
Seniors’ social image: the representation of ageing in electoral campaigns
2019
This study builds on previous research on ageing representation in relation to common assumptions and stereotypes (Schneider & Ingram 1993; Holladay & Coombs 2004, Kaid & Garner 2004), in order to provide an overview of the ways in which older adults have been addressed and exploited in US political (i.e. electoral) campaigns. Considering campaign ads as multimodal texts, Kress & van Leeuwen’s social semiotic approach (2001) is used to examine how multimodal elements convey seniors’ images. In addition, this analysis draws on legitimation theory (van Leeuwen 2008) to analyse which legitimation tactic is employed to convey meanings through the voice of elderly people. In this…

Chaining in interpreted interaction : Finnish Sign Language interpreting in an English-medium educational setting
2016
Interaction is always multimodal. Multimodality means that meanings are conveyed by using different semiotic resources, such as language, gestures, facial expressions, written text and pictures. Even though it is considered that also interpreted interaction is multimodal, this aspect of the interpreters’ work is often neglected in research and focus on how interpreters utilize multimodality in their work is called for. In this study one English-medium lecture that is interpreted into Finnish Sign Language is analyzed. The lecture’s duration is approximately one hour. The focus is on one multimodal phenomenon: chaining. Chaining means that different semiotic resources are utilized, for examp…

Reading skills are more and more required to succeed professional examination. French crane drivers are concerned with this problem. In order to help them, we have conducted a study with three main steps. First, we carried out a cognitive work analysis. Second, we test several analogical modalities of written presentations focusing on the construction of a specific simulator. Finally, two experiments are presented showing a significative effect of this simulator on the comprehension of cranes technical documentation.
Analysis and evaluation of the inclusive model in infant and primary centre support systems
2016
