Optimal control of the atmospheric arc of a space shuttle and numerical simulations with multiple-shooting method
2005
This article, continuation of previous works, presents the applications of geometric optimal control theory to the analysis of the Earth re-entry problem for a space shuttle where the control is the angle of bank, the cost is the total amount of thermal flux, and the system is subject to state constraints on the thermal flux, the normal acceleration and the dynamic pressure. Our analysis is based on the evaluation of the reachable set using the maximum principle and direct computations with the boundary conditions according to the CNES research project\footnote{The project is partially supported by the Centre National d'Etude Spatiales.}. The optimal solution is approximated by a concatenat…
Minimum fuel control of the planar circular restricted three-body problem
2012
The circular restricted three-body problem is considered to model the dynamics of an artificial body submitted to the attraction of two planets. Minimization of the fuel consumption of the spacecraft during the transfer, e.g. from the Earth to the Moon, is considered. In the light of the controllability results of Caillau and Daoud (SIAM J Control Optim, 2012), existence for this optimal control problem is discussed under simplifying assumptions. Thanks to Pontryagin maximum principle, the properties of fuel minimizing controls is detailed, revealing a bang-bang structure which is typical of L1-minimization problems. Because of the resulting non-smoothness of the Hamiltonian two-point bound…
Interconnectivity of habitats in soil: combining X-ray micro tomography and thin sectioning to reveal fungal-soil structure interactions
2007
International audience; The extreme heterogeneity and interconnectivity of the 3-dimensional pore space within soil makes it a unique habitat for the diverse microbial population and has a pivotal role in microbial interactions. Manipulation and quantification of the 3-dimensional pore space and the spatial distribution of micro-organisms is therefore essential if we are to fully understand microbial interactions. Here we pack soil microcosms at different bulk-densities to manipulate soil structure and use x-ray micro tomography and soil thin sections to analyse the effect on the connectivity of the pore volume and on fungal exploration.

A new invariant-based method for building biomechanical behavior laws - Application to an anisotropic hyperelastic material with two fiber families
2013
Abstract In this article, we present a general constructive and original approach that allows us to calculate the invariants associated with an anisotropic hyperelastic material made of two families of collagen fibers. This approach is based on mathematical techniques from the theory of invariants: • Definition of the material symmetry group. • Analytical calculation of a set of generators using the Noether’s theorem. • Analytical calculation of an integrity basis. • Comparison between the proposed invariants and the classical ones.
A physical-based constitutive model for surface integrity prediction in machining of OFHC copper
2017
International audience; Due to the rising interest in predicting machined surface integrity and sustainability, various models for metal cutting simulation have been developed. However, their accuracy depends deeply on the physical description of the machining process. This study aims to develop an orthogonal cutting model for surface integrity prediction, which includes a physical-based constitutive model of Oxygen Free High Conductivity (OFHC) copper. This constitutive model incorporates the effects of the state of stress and microstructure on the work material behavior, as well as a dislocation density-based model for surface integrity prediction. The coefficients of the constitutive mod…
An alternative space-time meshless method for solving transient heat transfer problems with high discontinuous moving sources
2016
International audience; The aim of this work is the development of a space-time diffuse approximation meshless method (DAM) to solve heat equations containing discontinuous sources. This work is devoted to transient heat transfer problems with static and moving heat sources applied on a metallic plate and whose power presents temporal discontinuities. The space-time DAM using classical weight function is convenient for continuous transient heat transfer. Nevertheless, for problems including discontinuities, some spurious oscillations for the temperature field occur. A new weight function, respecting the principle of causality, is used to eradicate the physically unexpected oscillations.
A spatially explicit model to simulate soil microbial communities’ dynamics at an agricultural landscape scale
2021
Soil microorganisms play a major role in soil functions and are an efficient indicator to evaluate the impact of agricultural practices on soil quality. Biogeographical studies over wide scales ranging from landscape to countries have concluded that soil microbial abundance and soil prokaryotic richness is following a heterogeneous distribution in space under the dependence of soil properties (e.g. pH, soil texture, organic matter content) and agricultural practices. The goal of this study is the creation of a model that can predict dynamics of soil microbial communities depending on the agricultural management over time. For this, we focus on a monitored landscape (Fénay landscape, 1.200 h…
Artificial Potential Field Simulation Framework for Semi-Autonomous Car Conception
2017
International audience; Artificial potential field is investigated to provide a high level of synergy between driver and semi-autonomous vehicle. This article presents a framework developed to test the performances of this approach. Stand-alone performances of this system is tested for a lane keeping and cruise control application. Performances are promising and future development is discussed.
