Abstract In this article, we present a thorough numerical comparison between unsymmetric and symmetric radial basis function collocation methods for the numerical solution of boundary value problems for partial differential equations. A series of test examples was solved with these two schemes, different problems with different type of governing equations, and boundary conditions. Particular emphasis was paid to the ability of these schemes to solve the steady-state convection-diffusion equation at high values of the Peclet number. Objective: To evaluate the effects of a low-frequency sound wave therapy programme on functional capacity, blood circulation and bone metabolism of the frail elderly. Design: Single-blind, randomized, controlled trial. Setting: Two senior service centres. Subjects: Forty-nine volunteers (14 males and 35 females) aged 62—93 years with up to 12 diagnosed diseases were allocated in either the intervention group (n = 30) or control group (n = 19). Starting from a recent proposal of a nonlinear Maxwell-Cattaneo equation for the heat transport with relaxational effects at nanoscale, in a special case of thermal-wave propagation we derive a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the amplitudes of the heatflux perturbation. The complete integrability of the obtained equation is investigated in order to prove the existence of infinite conservation laws, as well as the existence of infinite exact solutions. In this regards, we have considered the simplest nontrivial solutions, namely, the bright and dark (thermal) solitons, which may be interesting for energy transport and for information transmission in phononic circuits. Abstract Statistical analysis of stands of trees as a whole need suitable methods of spatial statistics. Obviously, trees within a stand affect development and survival of their neighbours. They interact and therefore have to be considered as a system of dependent random variates from an unknown stochastic process. Systems biology aims at deciphering the functioning of biological systems on the basis of the knowledge of their molecular components and the relations between such components. To address the issues involved, high-throughput technologies are used.
