Hydrokinetic simulations of nanoscopic precursor films in rough channels

2009

We report on simulations of capillary filling of high-wetting fluids in nano-channels with and without obstacles. We use atomistic (molecular dynamics) and hydrokinetic (lattice-Boltzmann) approaches which point out clear evidence of the formation of thin precursor films, moving ahead of the main capillary front. The dynamics of the precursor films is found to obey a square-root law as the main capillary front, z^2(t) ~ t, although with a larger prefactor, which we find to take the same value for the different geometries (2D-3D) under inspection. The two methods show a quantitative agreement which indicates that the formation and propagation of thin precursors can be handled at a mesoscopic…

Wait-and-switch stochastic model of the non-Debye relaxation. Derivation of the Burr survival probability

2006

Abstract Stochastic mechanism of relaxation, in which a dipole waits until a favourable condition for reorientation exists, is discussed. Assuming that an imposed direction of a dipole moment may be changed when a migrating defect reaches the dipole, we present a mathematically rigorous scheme relating the local random characteristics of a macroscopic system to its effective relaxation behaviour. We derive a relaxation function (the Burr survival probability) that is characterized by the stretched exponential or the power-law behaviour.

Zeno dynamics and high-temperature master equations beyond secular approximation

2013

Complete positivity of a class of maps generated by master equations derived beyond the secular approximation is discussed. The connection between such class of evolutions and physical properties of the system is analyzed in depth. It is also shown that under suitable hypotheses a Zeno dynamics can be induced because of the high temperature of the bath.

Resonant Transitions Due to Changing Boundaries

2019

The problem of a particle confined in a box with moving walls is studied, focusing on the case of small perturbations which do not alter the shape of the boundary (\lq pantography\rq). The presence of resonant transitions involving the natural transition frequencies of the system and the Fourier transform of the velocity of the walls of the box is brought to the light. The special case of a pantographic change of a circular box is analyzed in dept, also bringing to light the fact that the movement of the boundary cannot affect the angular momentum of the particle.

New trends in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics: classical and quantum systems

2020

The main aim of this special issue is to report recent advances and new trends in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of classical and quantum systems, from both theoretical and experimental points of view, within an interdisciplinary context. In particular, the nonlinear relaxation processes in the dynamics of out-of-equilibrium systems and the role of the metastability and environmental noise will be overviewed. Three main areas of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics will be covered: slow relaxation phenomena and dissipative dynamics; long-range interactions and classical systems; quantum systems. New trends such as quantum thermodynamics and novel types of quantum phase transitions occ…

Time-dependent perturbation treatment of independent Raman schemes

2007

The problem of a trapped ion subjected to the action of two or more independent Raman schemes is analysed through a suitable time-dependent perturbative approach based on the factorization of the evolution operator in terms of other unitary operators. We show that the dynamics of the system may be traced back to an effective Hamiltonian up to a suitable dressing. Moreover, we give the method to write the master equation corresponding to the case wherein spontaneous decays occur.

Nonstationary distributions and relaxation times in a stochastic model of memristor

2020

We propose a stochastic model for a memristive system by generalizing known approaches and experimental results. We validate our theoretical model by experiments carried out on a memristive device based on multilayer structure. In the framework of the proposed model we obtain the exact analytic expressions for stationary and nonstationary solutions. We analyze the equilibrium and non-equilibrium steady-state distributions of the internal state variable of the memristive system and study the influence of fluctuations on the resistive switching, including the relaxation time to the steady-state. The relaxation time shows a nonmonotonic dependence, with a minimum, on the intensity of the fluct…

A tomographic approach to non-Markovian master equations

2010

We propose a procedure based on symplectic tomography for reconstructing the unknown parameters of a convolutionless non-Markovian Gaussian noisy evolution. Whenever the time-dependent master equation coefficients are given as a function of some unknown time-independent parameters, we show that these parameters can be reconstructed by means of a finite number of tomograms. Two different approaches towards reconstruction, integral and differential, are presented and applied to a benchmark model made of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a bosonic bath. For this model the number of tomograms needed to retrieve the unknown parameters is explicitly computed.

Unifying approach to the quantification of bipartite correlations by Bures distance

2014

The notion of distance defined on the set of states of a composite quantum system can be used to quantify total, quantum and classical correlations in a unifying way. We provide new closed formulae for classical and total correlations of two-qubit Bell-diagonal states by considering the Bures distance. Complementing the known corresponding expressions for entanglement and more general quantum correlations, we thus complete the quantitative hierarchy of Bures correlations for Bell-diagonal states. We then explicitly calculate Bures correlations for two relevant families of states: Werner states and rank-2 Bell-diagonal states, highlighting the subadditivity which holds for total correlations…
