Identifying modularity structure of a genetic network in gene expression profile data

2009

Aim of this paper is to define a new statistical framework to identify central modules in Gaussian Graphical Models (GGMs) estimated by gene expression data measured on a sample of patients with negative molecular response to Imatinib. Imanitib is a drug used to treat certain types of cancer that in many statistical studies has been reported to have a significant clinical effect on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase as well as in blast crisis. For central module in a GGM we intend a module containing genes that are defined differently expressed.

Robustness of dynamic gene regulatory networks in Neisseria

2014

Gene regulatory networks are made of highly tuned, sparse and dynamical operations. We consider the case of the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium, a causative agent of life-threatening infections such as meningitis, and aim to infer a robust net- work of interactions across sixty proteins based on a detailed time course gene expres- sion study. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with L1 penalized maximum likelihood under a structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynamics, known presence or absence of links in the graphical model or equality constraints on the parameters. The authors developed a new optimization algo…

Design and analysis of discrete choice experiments for models with response time

2013

Settore SECS-S/02 - Statistica Per La Ricerca Sperimentale E TecnologicaA sector of conjoint analysis (experimental design in marketing research) is made of the so called choice experiments. In choice experiments respondents undergo a questionnaire which is nowadays mostly submitted through the internet. The questionnaire proposes to the respondent a sequence of choice sets each one including two or more profiles being a profile a specific combination of attribute levels. The respondent selects the preferred profile for each choice set. Responses given by a sample of respondents are analysed through suitable methods aimed to eventually find the best combination of attribute levels. One method of analysis adopts the Multinomial Logit (MLN) model. In this article the authors show the results of the MLN analysis compared with another model of analysis which uses an additional response which can be easily recorded by electronically submitted questionnaires. In practice modern survey platforms like “Qualtrics” (the one used for this work) can record the so called “response latency” i.e. the time taken by the respondent to make the choice and select the most preferred profile in the choice set. Thanks to a response latency model further refined in this work it is possible to deduce the relative weight of importance of the profiles for each choice set and respondent. This type of response can be used in place of the dichotomous choice variable in the MLN model. The two models and methods of analysis are deeply compared and it is critically discussed when it is better to use one or the other method. As a result a more reliable estimate of the optimal profile comes up implying lower risks for new investments and marketing decisions.

Analysis of clickstream data with mixture hidden markov models

2021

Clickstream data is an important source of information for businesses, however it is not easy to …

Does family of origin make a difference in occupational outcomes?

2022

Disadvantages faced by parents adversely affect their children’s chances of success in the labour market. We study the influence of intergenerational transmission of parental socio-economic background on the educational attainment and occupational outcome of children, also considering gender differences. To tackle such a complex system of relationships across the outcome variables (both exogenous and endogenous), we adopt a path analysis model. In particular, we study the intergenerational transmission of disadvantage using the innovative and rich AD SILC database, which shows the evolution of occupational outcomes over eight years (measured by wages in 2011 and 2018). Our findings indicate…

Resident’s Perceptions of Tourism Influence on Quality of Life: a Multilevel approach.

2015

This study aims to evaluate whether individual perceptions of tourism’s effects on quality of life (TQOL) are related to the degree of tourism activity in the host community, as well as to residents’ personal characteristics, by a multilevel model. Data from a survey performed in Sicily have been analyzed. The model revealed that the level of tourism activity have an influence on the way residents perceive the effect tourism in their community, as measured by TOQL index.

The Emergence of Women as Main Earners in Europe

2014

This paper conducts a cross-sectional empirical research aimed at documenting the emergence of a new family model characterized by women who earn the largest share of their household income. We show that in Europe, couples with women as the main earner have started to represent a non-negligible share of the population and identify the key characteristics of couples in which women are the main earner in comparison to equal-earner couples and to couples in which men are the main earner. We undertake a comparative approach using micro-level data from the European Social Survey on 19 countries and two time periods (2004 and 2010).
