Assessing the lighting systems flexibility for reducing and managing the power peaks in smart grids
2020
Abstract The application of “shiftable” or “modulable” load (i.e. washing machine, dishwasher, etc.) in a Smart Grid, can provide energy saving or modify the power flows in the grid, allowing a reduction of the electrical power peak. This paper explores the possibility to modulate the indoor artificial lighting to support this reduction. The study examines the impact of two different measures of power shaving. On the one hand, the change of Correlated Colour Temperature of the light source, and, on the other hand, the dimming of its luminous flux. The possibility to merge the above-mentioned technical solutions is also analyzed. Based on these strategies, several daily schedules of lighting…
Analysis of Load Match in Nearly Zero Energy Buildings
2018
The concept of load matching refers to the degree of agreement or disagreement of the on-site generation with the building load profiles: it can be increased and optimised with modifications on both the energy demand and generation. In this context, the paper presents the load match analysis of a case study: a modular housing construction (it has an area of 45 m 2 and S/V ratio equal to 2.75 m −1 ) built in Messina (Italy). Moreover, in order to optimize the design of the next test module to be built, a parametric analysis was performed considering different scenarios on the generation side, to explore the effectiveness of the solutions sets used in current design and plan different solutio…

Performance of LoRa technology: link-level and cell-level performance
2020
Abstract LoRa is a chirp spread spectrum technology that is becoming very popular for low-power wide-area networks, with high-density devices. In this chapter, we study the capacity of LoRa in rejecting different interfering signals. First, we analyze LoRa modulation numerically demonstrating that channel captures appear easily and that collisions between packets modulated with different spreading factors (SFs) are not uncommon. We validate such findings in experiments based on commercial devices and software-defined radios. Second, we model the network capacity obtainable in a typical LoRa cell: we show that high SFs can be seriously influenced by inter-SF collisions and that fading has a …
Human-ambient interaction through Wireless Sensor Networks
2009
Recent developments in technology have permitted the creation of cheap, and unintrusive devices that may be effectively employed for instrumenting an intelligent environment. The present work describes a modular framework that makes use of a class of those devices, namely wireless sensors, in order to monitor relevant physical quantities and to collect users' requirements through implicit feedback. A central intelligent unit extracts higher-level concepts from raw sensory inputs, and carries on symbolic reasoning based on them. The aim of the reasoning is to plan a sequence of actions that will lead the environment to a state as close as possible to the users' desires, taking into account b…
Modular Middleware for Gestural Data and Devices Management
2017
In the last few years, the use of gestural data has become a key enabler for human-computer interaction (HCI) applications. The growing diffusion of low-cost acquisition devices has thus led to the development of a class of middleware aimed at ensuring a fast and easy integration of such devices within the actual HCI applications. The purpose of this paper is to present a modular middleware for gestural data and devices management. First, we describe a brief review of the state of the art of similar middleware. Then, we discuss the proposed architecture and the motivation behind its design choices. Finally, we present a use case aimed at demonstrating the potential uses as well as the limit…
A Modular Architecture for Adaptive ChatBots
2011
We illustrate an architecture for a conversational agent based on a modular knowledge representation. This solution provides intelligent conversational agents with a dynamic and flexible behavior. The modularity of the architecture allows a concurrent and synergic use of different techniques, making it possible to use the most adequate methodology for the management of a specific characteristic of the domain, of the dialogue, or of the user behavior. We show the implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype: a set of modules exploiting different knowledge representation techniques and capable to differently manage conversation features has been developed. Each module is automatically trigg…
SMCP: a Secure Mobile Crowdsensing Protocol for fog-based applications
2020
Abstract The possibility of performing complex data analysis through sets of cooperating personal smart devices has recently encouraged the definition of new distributed computing paradigms. The general idea behind these approaches is to move early analysis towards the edge of the network, while relying on other intermediate (fog) or remote (cloud) devices for computations of increasing complexity. Unfortunately, because both of their distributed nature and high degree of modularity, edge-fog-cloud computing systems are particularly prone to cyber security attacks that can be performed against every element of the infrastructure. In order to address this issue, in this paper we present SMCP…
Investigation on Cascode Devices for High Frequency Electrical Drives Applications
2019
In the last years a widespread development in the market of electrical drives employing high-speed electrical machines has occurred in various industrial fields, due to the extremely high power density that can be reached. Nevertheless, to maintain output power quality without using bulky filtering networks, DC-AC converters should be controlled by means of higher PWM switching frequencies. New switching device technologies, such as Field Effect Transistors based on SiC and GaN, are therefore gathering momentum in order to comply with the higher working frequencies. To operate under high frequencies and at the same time at high voltage levels, alternative circuital configurations for switch…
A Modular Framework for Versatile Conversational Agent Building
2011
This paper illustrates a web-based infrastructure of an architecture for conversational agents equipped with a modular knowledge base. This solution has the advantage to allow the building of specific modules that deal with particular features of a conversation (ranging from its topic to the manner of reasoning of the chatbot). This enhances the agent interaction capabilities. The approach simplifies the chatbot knowledge base design process: extending, generalizing or even restricting the chatbot knowledge base in order to suit it to manage specific dialoguing tasks as much as possible.
