Angle and Height Estimation Technique for Aerial Vehicles using mmWave FMCW Radar

2021

In this article, we present a novel angle and height estimation technique for aerial vehicles using mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Radar. In the proposed method, Radar’s antennas are oriented vertically to measure the elevation angle of arrival of the aerial vehicle from ground station. Height of the aerial vehicle and horizontal distance of the aerial vehicle from Radar station on ground are estimated using the measured radial range and the elevation angle of arrival.

Fast fringe pattern phase demodulation using FIR Hilbert transformers

2016

This paper suggests the use of FIR Hilbert transformers to extract the phase of fringe patterns. This method is computationally faster than any known spatial method that produces wrapped phase maps. Also, the algorithm does not require any parameters to be adjusted which are dependent upon the specific fringe pattern that is being processed, or upon the particular setup of the optical fringe projection system that is being used. It is therefore particularly suitable for full algorithmic automation. The accuracy and validity of the suggested method has been tested using both computer-generated and real fringe patterns. This novel algorithm has been proposed for its advantages in terms of com…

Novel Three-Phase Multi-Level Inverter with Reduced Components

2019

A new multilevel converter topology is proposed in this paper. Low component count and compact design are the main features of the proposed topology. Furthermore, the proposed converter is a capacitor-, inductor-, and diode-free configuration, allowing reducing the converter footprint, increasing the lifetime and simplifying the control strategy. Further, a comparative study is carried out to highlight the merits of the proposed circuit as compared to existing multilevel topologies. Finally, simulation results for the three-level version using different modulation strategies are presented.

Performance Evaluation of a Three- Phase Five-Level Quasi-Z-Source Cascaded H-Bridge for Grid-Connected Applications

2018

In the field of the PV generation, Quasi-Z-source cascaded H-bridge (qZS-CHB) inverters are promising due to their features of modularity and high voltage conversion ratio. Thus, new topology structures and innovative modulation techniques are continuously being developed to improve the performance in terms of voltage stress and harmonic content. This paper proposes an innovative modulation technique that allows reducing the voltage stress and a specially designed grid-connected control strategy is also introduced. Through simulations in MATLAB, it has been validated that the performance of a three-phase five-level qZS-CHB is improved with the proposed solution.

A method to estimate the path gains and propagation delays of underwater acoustic channels using the arrival phase information of the multipath compo…

2017

Abstract We propose a method for the estimation of the channel parameters of underwater acoustic channels (UACs) by using a pseudo-noise (PN) sequence. For the channel sounding, the PN sequence is coherently modulated on a carrier frequency by using a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation scheme. For the demodulation, the arrival phases of the received BPSK signals must be known at the receiver. In practice, however, the arrival phases of the received signal are unknown. We propose to demodulate the received BPSK signal by using an hypothetical arrival phase, which will be increased from 0 to 2 π . The demodulated signal obtained by using the hypothetical arrival phase is then correla…

UnipaBCI a novel general software framework for brain computer interface

2017

The increasing interest in Brain Computer Interface (BCI) requires new fast, reliable and scalable frameworks that can be used by researchers to develop BCI based high performance applications in efficient and fast ways. In this paper is presented "UnipaBCI", a general software framework for BCI applications based on electroencephalogra-phy (EEG) that can fulfill these new needs. A visual evoked potentials (VEP) application has also been developed using the proposed framework in order to test the modular architecture and the overall performance. Different types of users (beginners and experts in BCI) have been involved during the "UnipaBCI" experimental test and they have exhibited good and…

Out-of-Band Signaling Scheme for High Speed Wireless LANs

2007

In recent years, the physical layer data rate provided by 802.11 Wireless LANs has dramatically increased thanks to significant advances in the modulation and coding techniques employed. However, previous studies show that the 802.11 MAC operation, namely the distributed coordination function (DCF), represents a limiting factor: the throughput efficiency drops as the channel bit rate increases, and a throughput upper limit does indeed exist when the channel bit rate goes to infinite high. These findings indicate that the performance of the DCF protocol will not be efficiently improved by merely increasing the channel bit rate. This paper shows that the DCF performance may significantly bene…

A Kalman Filter Approach for Distinguishing Channel and Collision Errors in IEEE 802.11 Networks

2008

In the last years, several strategies for maximizing the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 networks have been proposed in literature. Specifically, it has been shown that optimizations are possible both at the medium access control (MAC) layer, and at the physical (PHY) layer. In fact, at the MAC layer, it is possible to minimize the channel waste due to collisions and backoff expiration times, by tuning the minimum contention window as a function of the network congestion level. At the PHY layer, it is possible to improve the transmission robustness, by selecting a suitable modulation/coding scheme as a function of the channel quality perceived by the stations. However, the feasibility…

A Novel Symmetrical Boost Modulation Method for qZS-based CHB Inverters

2020

Quasi-Z-source cascaded H-bridge (qZS-CHB) inverters are arising as an innovation in the field of the electrical conversion for PV applications. This type of converters inherit the advantages of multilevel inverters and single-stage configuration. In this context, this paper proposes a novel symmetrical boost modulation strategy for qZS CHB multilevel inverters to increase the performance in terms of voltage stresses and power quality. The novelty lies in the adoption of a different concept to generate the shoot-through states compared to the traditional methods. Simulation analysis in a grid connected application to evaluate the benefits of this boost method is performed in the MATLAB/PLEC…

Selective Harmonic Elimination in a 5-Level Single Phase Converter with FPGA Based Controller

2018

Multilevel converters are becoming popular in high-power applications such as motor drives, renewable energy systems and distribution systems. Among all modulation techniques, selective harmonic elimination methods offer high quality voltage waveforms with operations at low switching frequency, hence, they are especially suitable for high-power applications. In this paper, a new analytical expression for the SHE problem formulated for a five-level converter is introduced, which is able to calculate the exact value of the switching angles. After a mathematical description of the proposed approach, this manuscript reports simulation and experimental results and analysis showing achievable res…
