Elasticity and long-term behavior of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)/montmorillonite (MMT) composites

2014

Abstract Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) nanocomposites with various amounts of montmorillonite clay (MMT) have been manufactured by using twin screw extrusion. By rising MMT weight content Wf up to 1 wt.% it is possible to increase yield strength and ultimate strength of the composite by 17% and 27% respectively in comparison to neat rPET. Introduction of MMT in the rPET leads also to considerable increase of the modulus of elasticity E. Relationship E(Wf), however, is non-linear and is characterized by slow-down in E growth along with increasing MMT content. At low nanofiller content experimental results are sufficiently well described by using the method of Mori–Tanaka and the…

Elastic Modulus and Thermal Conductivity of Thiolene/TiO2 Nanocomposites

2017

Metal oxide based polymer nanocomposites find diverse applications as functional materials, and in particular thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposites are promising candidates for dental restorative materials. The important mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, however, are still not well understood. In this study, the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of thiol-ene/TiO2 nanocomposite thin films with varying weight fractions of TiO2 nanoparticles are investigated by using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and 3ω measurements, respectively. As the TiO2 weight fraction increases from 0 to 90%, the effective elastic longitudinal modulus of the films increases from 6.2 to 37…

Morphology and Properties of Polyethylene/Clay Nanocomposite Drawn Fibers

2008

The influence of an elongational flow on the morphology of PE/clay nanocomposite drawn fibers was studied. An increase of the elastic modulus and the tensile strength as well as a decrease of the elongation at break are observed with increasing draw ratio. The applied elongational gradient orients the polymer chains and the clay particles along the spinning direction. When the applied flow results in the formation and the orientation of exfoliated nanoparticles, a pronounced increase of the mechanical properties is observed. The dispersed clay particles can be broken and oriented by the extensional flow, which might indicate a flow induced intercalated/exfoliated morphology transition.

Mechanical and thermomechanical properties of radiation modified poly(ethylene-octene)/Ni-Zn ferrite nanocomposites

2013

Poly(ethylene-1-octene) copolymer (POE) composites filled with nickel-zinc ferrite nanoparticles have been modified by exposure to an electron beam at doses up to 500 kGy. The influence of radiation dose and ferrite content on mechanical properties has been investigated. Thermomechanical properties – thermorelaxation stresses formed in thermal heating and thermo residual stresses resulting in the process of full setting and cooling of materials have been investigated for radiation cross-linked oriented (extended up to 100%) composite samples. Increase of concentration of ferrite particles and increase of radiation dose affects a notable increase of elastic modulus and reduces the deformabil…

Nanoindentation response analysis of Cu-rich carbon–copper composite films deposited by PVD technique

2015

Abstract The micromechanical properties of sputter deposited amorphous carbon–copper (a-C/Cu) composite films with different carbon content (6.8–19.8 at.%) were investigated. Atomic force and electron microscopy studies confirmed that the a-C/Cu films have a two-phase microstructure of amorphous sp 2 /sp 3 -bonded carbon as a composite matrix with embedded copper nanocrystallites encapsulated in a graphene shell. Load–displacement curves obtained in nanoindentation experiments followed Meyer's law with the exponent varying slightly within the interval 2.0–2.2 depending on the penetration depth and carbon content. The reverse indentation size effect was observed which was most likely the res…

Real-time measurements of sliding friction and elastic properties of ZnO nanowires inside a scanning electron microscope

2011

Abstract A real-time nanomanipulation technique inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to investigate the elastic and frictional (tribological) properties of zinc oxide nanowires (NWs). A NW was translated over a surface of an oxidised silicon wafer using a nanomanipulator with a glued atomic-force microscopic tip. The shape of the NW elastically deformed during the translation was used to determine the distributed kinetic friction force. The same NW was then positioned half-suspended on edges of trenches cut by a focused ion beam through a silicon wafer. In order to measure Young’s modulus, the NW was bent by pushing it at the free end with the tip, and the interaction f…

Mechanical properties of the nanometer scale pre-crystalline order of a poly (ethylene terepthalate) / poly (ethylene naphthalene) blend

2006

A previous study carried out on PET has shown that this polymer undergoes a continuous structural modification over a wide cooling rate interval when solidified from the melt[1] assuming a semi-crystalline structure below 2 K s 1 and a completely amorphous one above 100 K s 1. Most important was the existence of a state of intermediate order between the above cooling rates which was evidenced by the absence of crystalline reflections in the WAXS patterns and the occurrence of SAXS maxima[2] and exothermic peak areas (DSC) in the cooling rate range above 2 K s 1. Microhardness (MH) measurements revealed that this phase affects the mechanical properties[3] plausible if one thinks of crystalli…

Mechanical characterization of dry asphalt rubber concrete for base layers by means of the four bending points tests

2012

The mechanical characterisation of the asphalt concrete in terms of both the fatigue resistance and the stiffness modulus is necessary to use any design method of the flexible road pavements. Even more the determination of these mechanical properties is necessary if the asphalt concrete investigated is an innovative material as a dry asphalt rubber concrete DARC (i.e. a bituminous mixture with rubber via dry process). Such material is less known and investigated than the asphalt rubber concrete via wet process, even if its application implies peculiar economical and environmental advantages such as no specialized equipment or significant plant modifications and large quantity of recycled wa…

X-ray micro-tomography based FEM modelling of hygroexpansion in PLA composites reinforced with birch pulp fibres

2017

This article presents a microscale modelling approach coupled with X-ray computed micro-tomography for the evaluation of material properties of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced by birch pulp fibers under the effect of moisture. The results in terms of elastic moduli and hygroexpansion deformation were found in good agreement with the measurements taken at different levels of water uptake.
