The boson peak

The vibrational properties of glasses in the THz range differ very much from what is expected from Debye's elasticity theory: the density of states (DOS) deviates from Debye's ω2 law [the “boson peak” (BP)], the sound velocity shows a negative dispersion in the BP frequency regime and there is a strong increase in the sound attenuation near the BP frequency. These anomalies are related to an anomalous temperature dependence of the specific heat and thermal conductivity in the 10 K regime. On the saddle loop bifurcation

It is shown that the set of C∞ (generic) saddle loop bifurcations has a unique modulus of stability γ ≥]0, 1[∪]1, ∞[ for (C0, Cr)-equivalence, with 1≤r≤∞. We mean for an equivalence (x,μ) ↦ (h(x,μ), ϕ(μ)) with h continuous and ϕ of class Cr. The modulus γ is the ratio of hyperbolicity at the saddle point of the connection. Already asking ϕ to be a lipeomorphism forces two saddle loop bifurcations to have the same modulus, while two such bifurcations with the same modulus are (C0,±Identity)-equivalent.

Higher-order correlation functions and nonlinear response functions in a gaussian trap model.

The four-time correlation function of a general dynamical variable obeying Gaussian statistics is calculated for the trap model with a Gaussian density of states. It is argued that for energy-independent variables this function is reminiscent of the four-time functions that have been discussed earlier in the interpretation of the results of four-dimensional NMR experiments on supercooled liquids. Parameter properties and stellar population of the old open cluster NGC 3960

We present a $BVI$ photometric and astrometric catalogue of the open cluster NGC 3960, down to limiting magnitude $V\sim22$, obtained from observations taken with the Wide Field Imager camera at the MPG/ESO 2.2 m Telescope at La Silla. The photometry of all the stars detected in our field of view has been used to estimate a map of the strong differential reddening affecting this area. Our results indicate that, within the region where the cluster dominates, the $E(V-I)$ values range from 0.21 up to 0.78, with $E(V-I)=0.36$ ($E(B-V)=0.29$) at the nominal cluster centroid position; color excesses $E(V-I)$ up to 1 mag have been measured in the external regions of the field of view where field …

On the Path and Area J<sub>x1</sub>-Integral Components and their Relationship to the Out-of-Plane Constraint in Elastic Cracked Plates

In this paper, the path and area components of the Jx1-integral, JP and JA, in three dimensional elastic cracked plates under mode-I loading are investigated aiming at relating them to the out-of-plane constraint conditions resulting from different specimen thicknesses. It is concluded that the JP and JA components of the Jx1-integral vary in the region where the out-of-plane constraint extends. Sufficiently far from the crack front, these integrals tend to stabilize, indicating that the thickness constraint vanishes and that a 2D-like stress and strain fields have been reached. Elasticity of Poissonian fiber networks

An effective-medium model is introduced for the elasticity of two-dimensional random fiber networks. These networks are commonly used as basic models of heterogeneous fibrous structures such as paper. Using the exact Poissonian statistics to describe the microscopic geometry of the network, the tensile modulus can be expressed by a single-parameter function. This parameter depends on the network density and fiber dimensions, which relate the macroscopic modulus to the relative importance of axial and bending deformations of the fibers. The model agrees well with simulation results and experimental findings. We also discuss the possible generalizations of the model. Peer reviewed

The elastic body model: a pedagogical approach integrating real time measurements and modelling activities

In this paper, we describe a pedagogical approach to elastic body movement based on measurements of the contact times between a metallic rod and small bodies colliding with it and on modelling of the experimental results by using a microcomputer-based laboratory and simulation tools. The experiments and modelling activities have been built in the context of the laboratory of mechanical wave propagation of the two-year graduate teacher education programme of Palermo’s University. Some considerations about observed modifications in trainee teachers’ attitudes in utilizing experiments and modelling are discussed.

Abstract In this study, we investigated the peculiarities of moisture absorption and moisture-induced effects on the elastic and viscoelastic flexural properties of epoxy resin and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) filled with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Short-term cyclic creep-recovery tests of moistened epoxy and CFRP filled with MWCNTs revealed improvements in creep resistance for both materials. The addition of MWCNTs to the epoxy resin suppressed the moisture absorption by the material, causing a reduction in the diffusion coefficient by 31% and equilibrium moisture content by 15%.
