Sepiolite-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites: Thermal, mechanical, and morphological behavior

A bisphenol A-based epoxy resin was modified with pristine sepiolite and an organically surface-modified sepiolite and thermally cured using two different curing agents: an aliphatic and a cycloaromatic diamine. The nanocomposites were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), rheology, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy. The initial sepiolite–epoxy mixtures show a better dispersion for the sepiolite-modified system that forms a percolation network structure. Mechanical properties have also been determined. Siliceous spicules enhance fracture-resistance and stiffness of pre-colonial Amazonian ceramics

AbstractPottery was a traditional art and technology form in pre-colonial Amazonian civilizations, widely used for cultural expression objects, utensils and as cooking vessels. Abundance and workability of clay made it an excellent choice. However, inferior mechanical properties constrained their functionality and durability. The inclusion of reinforcement particles is a possible route to improve its resistance to mechanical and thermal damage. Compressibility and phase stability of iron-rich ankerite

ABSTRACT: The structure of the naturally occurring, iron-rich mineral Ca₁․₀₈(₆)Mg₀.₂₄(₂)Fe₀.₆₄(₄)Mn₀.₆₄(₄)(CO₃)₂ ankerite was studied in a joint experimental and computational study. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 20 GPa were complemented by density functional theory calculations. The rhombohedral ankerite structure is stable under compression up to 12 GPa. A third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields V₀ = 328.2(3) ų, bulk modulus B₀ = 89(4) GPa, and its first-pressure derivative B'₀ = 5.3(8)-values which are in good agreement with those obtained in our calculations for an ideal CaFe(CO₃)₂ ankerite composition. Quasihyperbolic boundary conditions and capacity: Uniform continuity of quasiconformal mappings

We prove that quasiconformal maps onto domains which satisfy a suitable growth condition on the quasihyperbolic metric are uniformly continuous when the source domain is equipped with the internal metric. The obtained modulus of continuity and the growth assumption on the quasihyperbolic metric are shown to be essentially sharp. As a tool, we prove a new capacity estimate.

Boundary blow-up under Sobolev mappings

We prove that for mappings $W^{1,n}(B^n, \R^n),$ continuous up to the boundary, with modulus of continuity satisfying certain divergence condition, the image of the boundary of the unit ball has zero $n$-Hausdorff measure. For H\"older continuous mappings we also prove an essentially sharp generalized Hausdorff dimension estimate.

Geometric mean and triangles inscribed in a semicircle in Banach spaces

AbstractWe consider the triangles with vertices x, −x and y where x,y are points on the unit sphere of a normed space. Using the geometric means of the variable lengths of the sides of these triangles, we define two geometric constants for Banach spaces. These constants are closely related to the modulus of convexity of the space under consideration, and they seem to represent a useful tool to estimate the exact values of the James and Jordan–von Neumann constants of some Banach spaces.

Objectives: To evaluate and compare the flexural strength and the elastic moduli of three provisional crown materials (methyl methacrylate based autopolymerized resin, bis acryl composite based autopolymerized resin and urethane dimethacrylate based light polymerized resin) after storing in artificial saliva and testing at intervals of 24 hours and 7 days.
