Prophylaxis of radiogenic sialadenitis and mucositis by coumarin/troxerutine in patients with head and neck cancer--a prospective, randomized, placebo…

2001

To study the efficacy of coumarin/troxerutine for the protection of salivary glands and mucosa during irradiation. Design: Prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. Setting: University hospital, Germany. Patients: 48 patients who had radiotherapy to the head and neck. Main outcome measures: Salivary gland scintigraphy and acute side-effects of radiotherapy (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) score). Results: 23 patients (11 experimental, 12 placebo) completed the study. The global efficacy measure combining scintigraphy and RTOG score favoured the experimental arm (P= 0.07). The RTOG score showed significantly fewer acute side-effects of radiation in the experime…

Incidence rate of metastases in the oral cavity: a review of all metastatic lesions in the oral cavity

2021

Background Metastases in the oral cavity are rare and account for only 1 to 3% of all malignant lesions in this area. The primary location from which most metastases have been described in the oral cavity in adult patients include lungs, breasts, kidneys and colon. Material and Methods A systematic search of the literature was carried out following the PRISMA statement in PubMed database. Clinical trials and case series published in the last 10 years [2010-2020] were eligible to be selected. The headings and keywords used in the searches were “cancer” AND “oral metastases”, “incidence” AND “oral metastases”, “oral metastases” AND “jaw bone”, “oral metastases” AND “soft tissue”. Dermoid and epidermoid cysts of the oral cavity : a 48-year retrospective study with focus on clinical and morphological features and review of main …

2020

Background Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are slow-growing, benign developmental cysts that arise from ectodermal tissue and can occur anywhere in the body. Less than 7% of these cysts involve the head and neck region, with only 1.6% of cases presenting in the oral cavity. To evaluate the clinical and histopathological features of dermoid (DCs) and epidermoid (ECs) cysts stored in the archives of a referred Oral Pathology Service over a 48-year-period, and to review current concepts about these cysts. Material and Methods All DCs and ECs were reviewed, and clinical data were obtained from the patient records. Fourteen cases of DCs and thirteen cases of ECs were re-evaluated microscopically by…

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx.

2003

A case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx is reported. The lesion was located in the base of the tongue and grossly presented a characteristic finger-like pattern of growth. The clinicopathological profile of the neoplasm is presented and the differential diagnosis with other exophytic squamous cell carcinomas is discussed.

Ovarian Endometrioid-like Yolk Sac Tumor Treated by Surgery Alone, with Recurrence at 12 Years

1999

Abstract We describe the case of a stage Ia endometrioid-like yolk sac tumor (YST) of the ovary, which was originally misdiagnosed as a malignant struma ovarii and not treated with adjuvant chemotherapy. After 12 years, a contralateral dermoid cyst was excised along with a small omental nodule of partially necrotic and calcified endometrioid-like YST. No tumor was detected in several other biopsy specimens, and a peritoneal lavage was negative for tumor cells. Since there was no evidence of remaining tumor and the serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) level was normal after the second operation, the patient was followed. Serial serum AFP levels remained normal for 4 months. At a second-look laparotomy …

Long-term outcome of treatment with dacarbazine, cisplatin, interferon-α and intravenous high dose interleukin-2 in poor risk melanoma patients

1998

Melanoma patients with very advanced disease are usually excluded from chemoimmunotherapy trials; however, the efficacy of intensive treatment regimens needs to be established for this patient population. This study aimed to evaluate the response rate and survival achieved with chemoimmunotherapy in very advanced melanoma patients. Forty-two patients received dacarbazine (250 mg/m2, days 1-3), cisplatin (30mg/m2, days 1-3), interferon-alpha (10 Mio IU/m2 subcutaneously, days 1-5) and intravenous interleukin-2 (18 Mio IU/m2 over 6 h, 12 h then 24 h, followed by 13.5 MioIU/m2 in 72 h). In cases of brain metastases (n = 12) radiation therapy was added. Ten patients (24%) achieved a partial res…

Immunohistochemical expression of ubiquitin and telomerase in cervical cancer

2009

Artículo publicado en: Virchows Arch (2009) 455:235–243. DOI 10.1007/s00428-009-0818-7 Ubiquitin and telomerase immunohistochemical expression patterns in cervical cancer were compared with normal cervical tissue samples. Eighty-one cervical cancer cases and 22 normal exo–endocervical tissue were examined with polyclonal antibody for ubiquitin and 44G12 clone for telomerase using tissue microarrays. The results were interpreted using a semiquantitative scale The average age of patients was 50.67 years. The most frequent histological types were moderately differentiated epidermoid carcinoma (43.5%), according to the degree of differentiation, and endocervical adenocarcinoma (42.1%). Immunohi…

Familial adenomatosis polyposis-related desmoid tumours treated with low-dose chemotherapy: Results from an international, multi-institutional, retro…

2019

[Introduction] Desmoid tumour (DT) is a locally aggressive fibroblastic proliferative disease representing the most common extraintestinal manifestation of familial adenomatosis polyposis (FAP). As data on the activity of chemotherapy in these patients are limited, we examined the outcomes of patients treated with low-dose methotrexate (MTX)+vinca alkaloids (vinorelbine or vinblastine).

The sigma rectum pouch (Mainz pouch II)

1996

A low-pressure reservoir for urine is created by antimesenteric splitting and side-to-side anastomosis of the rectosigmoid, the expectation being to obtain better continence rates and better protection of the upper tract than are achievable by ureterosigmoidostomy. Between 1990 and August 1993 the procedure was performed in 73 patients (59 adults and 14 children) whose mean age was 43.5 years. The indications were malignancy (n = 55), bladder exstrophy/epispadias (n = 14), trauma (n = 3), and sinus urogenitalis (n = 1). Of the 73 patients, 69 were followed for a mean period of 127 (range, 1-34) months. In all, 5 early complications were encountered (6.8%). In addition, 8 late complications …
