Enterococcal meningitis caused by Enterococcus casseliflavus. First case report

2005

Abstract Background Enterococcal meningitis is an uncommon disease usually caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium and is associated with a high mortality rate. Enterococcus casseliflavus has been implicated in a wide variety of infections in humans, but never in meningitis. Case presentation A 77-year-old Italian female presented for evaluation of fever, stupor, diarrhea and vomiting of 3 days duration. There was no history of head injury nor of previous surgical procedures. She had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years, for which she was being treated with steroids and methotrexate. On admission, she was febrile, alert but not oriented to time and place. H…

Estimation of Vegetation Structure Parameters From SMAP Radar Intensity Observations

2021

In this article, we present a multipolarimetric estimation approach for two model-based vegetation structure parameters (shape A and orientation distribution ψ of the main canopy elements). The approach is based on a reduced observation set of three incoherent (no phase information) polarimetric backscatter intensities (|S HH | 2 , |S HV | 2 , and |S VV | 2 ) combined with a two-parameter (A P and ψ) discrete scatterer model of vegetation. The objective is to understand whether this confined set of observations contains enough information to estimate the two vegetation structure parameters from the L-band radar signals. In order to disentangle soil and vegetation scattering influences on th…

Multi-Resource Management for Multi-Tier Space Information Networks: A Cooperative Game

2019

With the drastic increase of space information network (SIN) traffic and the diversity of network traffic types, the optimal allocation of the scarce network resources is of great significance for optimizing the SIN system capability. In this paper, we propose a multi-resource management method for multi-tier SIN using the cooperative Nash bargaining solution. Since the original problem is a non-convex problem, we firstly make logarithmic transition, and then find a tightest lower bound function to convert the initial problem into a convex one. In order to carry out the optimal bandwidth and power allocation in SIN, we construct a joint bandwidth and power allocation (JBPA) algorithm. Simul…

Molecular phylogeny of Camphorosmeae (Camphorosmoideae, Chenopodiaceae): Implications for biogeography, evolution of C4-photosynthesis and taxonomy

2011

Camphorosmeae constitute a species-rich tribe of Chenopodiaceae-Camphorosmoideae that consists mostly of subshrubs and annuals, distributed in steppes and semi-deserts of Australia, Eurasia, North Africa, southern Africa and North America. We study (1) the relationships of Camphorosmeae to major lineages of the closely related Salsoloideae and (2) the diversification of the tribe with focus on the non-Australian members using sequence variation of five different markers (rbcL gene, ndhF gene, atpB-rbcL spacer, psbB-psbH spacer, ITS) and morphological characters. The cpDNA analyses revealed six early-branching lineages in Camphorosmoideae/Salsoloideae (Camphorosmeae, Salsoleae s.str., Caroxy…

Sensor Node Network for Remote Moisture Measurement in Timber Based on Bluetooth Low Energy and Web-Based Monitoring System

2021

This paper proposes an IoT system based on wireless BLE connectivity to monitor the moisture content of wood, using a compact and low-cost moisture device that relies on a resistance measurement method valid for an ultra-wide range of resistance values. This device is digitally controlled with a BLE-incorporated micro-controller characterized by its small size and low power consumption, providing long-life battery. The proposed system consists of two main parts: first, the BLE moisture device including the moisture content measurement and wireless capability (BLE)

Naphthyridine Derivatives as a Model System for Potential Lithium-Sulfur Energy-Storage Applications

2015

Naphthyridines have been identified as structural elements in sulfurized polyacrylonitrile, which is a common electrode material in lithium–sulfur batteries. Some dibenzonaphthyridine derivatives with a fused dithiolo moiety were prepared as model compounds for battery studies. These heterocyclic systems were prepared via the corresponding diphenyldicarbamide intermediate. Followed by naphthyridione formation, stepwise installation of the dithiolane subunit occurred in a straightforward manner. In the solid state, the heteroaromatic system is completely planar and was thoroughly characterized. Initial battery cycling tests indicated a potential use of such structural motifs in sulfur–lithiu…

Temsirolimus in Combination with Bendamustine and Rituximab (BeRT) for the Treatment of Relapsed Mantle Cell and Follicular Lymphoma: Final Phase I/I…

2016

Abstract Background: mTOR inhibition has been shown to be effective in various subtypes of malignant lymphomas (Smith et al, JCO 2010). Furthermore, in relapsed MCL a phase III trial demonstrated superiority of Temsirolimus to chemotherapy. Although novel treatment options as Ibrutinib have changed the treatment landscape for MCL, no curative potential could be shown for this approach and novel concepts continue to be needed. Several trials provided promising results when Temsirolimus is combined with agents like Rituximab (Ansell et al, Lancet Oncology 2011) or chemoimmunotherapy, as shown in part I (phase I) of the reported trial (Hess, Leukemia, 2015). We now report the final analysis of…

Crystal structure of 5-(5,6-dihydrobenzo[4,5]imidazo[1,2-c]quinazolin-6-yl)-2-methoxyphenol

2015

In the molecule of the title compound, C21H17N3O2, the 5,6-dihydrobenzimidazo[1,2-c]quinazoline moiety is disordered over two orientations about a pseudo-mirror plane, with a refined occupancy ratio of 0.863 (2):0.137 (2). The dihedral angles formed by the benzimidazole ring system and the benzene ring of the quinazoline group are 14.28 (5) and 4.7 (3)° for the major and minor disorder components, respectively. An intramolecular O—H...O hydrogen bond is present. In the crystal, molecules are linked by O—H...N hydrogen bonds, forming chains running parallel to [10-1].
