Properties of the F0F1 ATPase Complex from Rhodospirillum rubrum Chromatophores, Solubilized by Triton X-100

1979

1. A cold-stable oligomycin-sensitive F0F1 ATPase complex from chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum FR 1 was solubilized by Triton X-100 and purified by gel filtration. 2. The F0F1 complex is resolved by sodium dodecyl sulfate electrophoresis into 14 polypeptides with approximate molecular weights in the range of 58000--6800; five of these polypeptides are derived from the F1 moiety of the complex which carries the catalytic centers of the enzyme. 3. The purified F0F1 complex is homogeneous according to analytical ultracentrifugation and isoelectric focusing. 4. The molecular weight as determined by gel filtration is about 480 000 +/- 30 000. S020,w is 1.45 +/- 0.1 S and the pI is 5.4. 5…

Follia e figurazioni del mostruoso in Down Below di Leonora Carrington

2016

This paper analyses the figuration of monstrosity in Leonora Carrington's surreal memoir Down Below. By focusing on the author's remembering of her experience at a Spanih asylum during World War II, we are going to concentrate our exam on the representation of monstrosity both at a mind and physical level.

Ecologie évolutive de la malaria aviaire : effets des caractéristiques de l'hôte et de l'environnement

2012

Host-parasite interactions are one of the main topics in evolutionary sciences. This complex coevolution depends on several trade-offs and can be influenced by environmental factors. Here, we propose to study host-parasite interactions with a multi-level approach, using experimental and natural population studies, focusing on avian malaria parasites. First, we studied the effect of host characteristics, and more precisely the immune system. The immune system confers benefits in terms of protection against the parasite, but can also generated immunopathological costs. Life history traits, like age or social status, appear to modify parasitemia but not prevalence. In a second part, we evaluat…

Comparison of speed-vacuum method and heat-drying method to measure brain water content of small brain samples

2016

Abstract Background A reliable measurement of brain water content (wet-to-dry ratio) is an important prerequisite for conducting research on mechanisms of brain edema formation. The conventionally used oven-drying method suffers from several limitations, especially in small samples. A technically demanding and time-consuming alternative is freeze-drying. New method Centrifugal vacuum concentrators (e.g. SpeedVac/speed-vacuum drying) are a combination of vacuum-drying and centrifugation, used to reduce the boiling temperature. These concentrators have the key advantages of improving the freeze-drying speed and maintaining the integrity of dried samples, thus, allowing e.g. DNA analyses. In t…

Coronary artery calcium and physical performance as determinants of mortality in older age: The AGES-Reykjavik Study

2013

Background. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) and physical performance have been shown to be associated with mortality, but it is not clear whether one of them modifies the association. We investigated the association between the extent of CAC and physical performance among older individuals and explored these individual and combined effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and non-CVD mortality. Methods. We studied 4074 participants of the AGES–Reykjavik Study who were free from coronary heart disease, had a CAC score calculated from computed tomography scans and had data on mobility limitations and gait speed at baseline in 2002–2006 at a mean age of 76 years. Register-based mortalit…

[(11)C]PR04.MZ, a promising DAT ligand for low concentration imaging: Synthesis, efficient (11)C-O-methylation and initial small animal PET studies.

2009

PR04.MZ was designed as a highly selective dopamine transporter inhibitor, derived from natural cocaine. Its binding profile indicates that [{sup 11}C]PR04.MZ may be suited as a PET radioligand for the non-invasive exploration of striatal and extrastriatal DAT populations. As a key feature, its structural design facilitates both, labelling with fluorine-18 at its terminally fluorinated butynyl moiety and carbon-11 at its methyl ester function. The present report concerns the efficient [{sup 11}C]MeI mediated synthesis of [{sup 11}C]PR04.MZ from an O-desmethyl precursor trifluoroacetic acid salt with Rb{sub 2}CO{sub 3} in DMF in up to 95 {+-} 5% labelling yield. A preliminary {mu}PET-experim…

Trends in colorectal cancer incidence: a period and birth-cohort analysis in a well-defined French population.

2011

Abstract Background France stands among high-risk areas for colorectal cancer. Different trends in CRC incidence are reported around the world. The aim of this study was to provide temporal trends in CRC incidence over a 30-year period in a French well-defined population. Methods Between 1976 and 2005, 17,028 new cases were registered by the Burgundy digestive cancer registry. The mean variations in age-standardized incidence rates were estimated using a Poisson regression adjusted for age for each gender and location. The cumulative risk by birth cohort of developing a cancer over the age range 0-74 years was estimated using an age-cohort model. Results Incidence rates for right and left c…

HPV DNA and survivin expression in epithelial oral carcinogenesis: a relationship?

2004

Abstract HPV has been thought to be involved in the development of several oral diseases, such as premalignant mucosal lesions and oral carcinoma. Survivin is a recently characterized IAP protein, which is abundantly expressed in most solid and haematological malignancies, but undetectable in normal adult tissues. Aim of this study was to investigate survivin expression and HPV presence in oral premalignant lesions and oral carcinoma. 47 samples of oral tissue including 11 squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC), 16 oral leukoplakias (OL) and 20 normal oral mucosa specimens, after investigation of HPV presence by nested PCR (consensus MY/GP primers) and viral genotype identification by direct seque…

Overexpression of cyclin D1 and interaction between p27Kip1 and tumour thickness predict lymph node metastases occurrence in lower lip squamous cell …

2005

We have attempted to identify those subgroups of patients most likely to develop lymph node metastases from squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip (LLSSC). A total of 97 subjects, who did not undergo elective neck dissection, were recruited into the 60-month disease-free survival study. After univariate analysis, tumour size, histological grading, maximal thickness, perineural invasion and immunoreactivity to cyclin D1 and p27Kip1 proteins proved to be significant factors. Tests of the effect of interaction between p27Kip1 LI and tumour thickness yielded that the impact of tumour thickness on the risk of lymph node metastases was modified by the percentage of p27Kip1 positive cells. Subse…
