Modelling the influence of nanoparticles in the phase behaviour of an epoxy/polystyrene mixture

Abstract The cloud point temperatures of four series of epoxy/polystyrene blends have been experimentally determined as a function of polymer mass and system composition. The phase diagrams show an UCST behaviour, increasing incompatibility as the molar mass increases. The Flory–Huggins theory with a concentration-dependent interaction parameter has been developed to study the compatibility of two polymers in presence of spherical nanoparticles. On the Role of Drop Break Up for Coalescence Processes and Morphology Development in Polymer Blends under Shear

Drop sizes and drop-size distributions were determined as a function of time at constant shear rates, γ, by means of an optical shear cell in combination with an optical light microscope after preshearing the samples at high γ. Zinc isotope variations in archeological human teeth (Lapa do Santo, Brazil) reveal dietary transitions in childhood and no contamination from gloves

International audience; Zinc (Zn) isotope ratios of dental enamel are a promising tracer for dietary reconstruction in archeology, but its use is still in its infancy. A recent study demonstrated a high risk of Zn contamination from nitrile, and latex gloves used during chemical sample preparation. Here we assess the potential impact of the use of such gloves during enamel sampling on the Zn isotope composition of teeth from a population of early Holocene hunter gatherers from Lapa do Santo, Lagoa Santa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Pb(II) adsorption by a novel activated carbon - alginate composite material. A kinetic and equilibrium study.

The adsorption capacity of an activated carbon – calcium alginate composite material (ACAA-Ca) has been tested with the aim of developing a new and more efficient adsorbent material to remove Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH = 5, in NaCl medium and in the ionic strength range 0.1–0.75 mol L−1. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP-ASV) technique was used to check the amount of Pb(II) ion removed during kinetic and equilibrium experiments. Torque rheometry investigation of model transreactions involving condensation polymers: I. Polyesters

The chemical transformations taking place when poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) or poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) are blended in the melt with different low molar mass substances containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amine functional groups have been investigated as models of the transreactions, undergone by the polyesters in reactive blending operations. The polyester molecular weight changes caused by the alcoholysis, acidolysis, aminolysis, and esterolysis reactions have been monitored by torque-rheometry, using a Brabender Plasticorder static mixer. Suzuki polycondensation with a hairpin monomer.

Two straight monomers were subjected to an AA/BB-type Suzuki polycondensation with a hairpin-shaped 1,8-anthrylene monomer as the counterpart leading to a novel polyarylene which should have the preferred conformation of a folded chain. The molar masses were determined by gel permeation chromatography and dynamic light scattering and found to be M(w) = 14,000 and M(n) = 7,000. MALDI-TOF MS analysis of a fraction provides a fingerprint of the step-growth nature of this polymerization.

Molecular parameters of hyperbranched polymers made by self-condensing vinyl polymerization. 1. Molecular weight distribution

The molecular weight distribution (MWD) and its moments are calculated for hyperbranched polymers formed by self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) of monomers (“inimers”) with the general structure AB*, where A is a vinyl group and B* is an initiating group. The calculated MWD is extremely broad, the polydispersity index (PDI) being equal to the number-average degree of polymerization:  Pw/Pn = Pn. It is twice as broad as that for the polycondensation of AB2 type monomers. If the fraction of unreacted monomer is not taken into account, the MWD becomes somewhat narrower, P‘w/P‘n ≈ 0.40P‘n. Enthalpy of Solution of Nonionic Solutes in Organized Systems

The standard enthalpies of solution of alcohols in micellar solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide were obtained by direct measurements and by enthalpies of mixing. The observed trends were analyzed with a previously reported model. From the resulting equations, the distribution constant, standard enthalpy of transfer from aqueous to the micellar phase and the standard enthalpy of solution in micellar phase can be calculated at the same time using a linear least-squares analysis. The model seems to hold well also in the case of short chain surfactants and microheterogeneities in spite of the fact that the micellization equilibrium is treated as a pseudo-phase transition.

The dynamical region of the measured calibration curves is investigated using the results of the theory published previously. The kinetic constants of the flow-equilibrium are calculated from the measurements according to two different models for a spontaneous polymer diffusion of the transported P-mer from sol into gel of the Phase Distribution Chromatography (PDC)-column. The corresponding lateral concentration profiles in the gel are found by analytical integration of Fick's second law under the corresponding boundaries.
