Abscess of the orbit arising 48 h after root canal treatment of a maxillary first molar
2006
Aim To discuss a rare, but severe complication arising following routine root canal treatment. Summary An orbital abscess is reported that occurred following routine root canal treatment. A young, healthy female patient, with no history of chronic paranasal infection had undergone root canal treatment of the right maxillary first molar. On hospital admission, she presented with extensive periorbital swelling and discreet diplopia. Computed tomography imaging identified massive purulent sinusitis and subsequent involvement of the orbit via the inferior and medial orbital wall within 48 h after completion of root canal treatment. Immediate surgical drainage of the maxillary sinus and the or…
Comparison of the effect of ginger and aloe vera mouthwashes on xerostomia in patients with type 2 diabetes: A clinical trial, triple-blind
2021
Background Ginger and aloe vera are two medicinal herbs mostly used to produce mouthwash. This study aimed to compare the effects of ginger and aloe vera mouthwashes on the xerostomia in patients referred to Bandar Abbas diabetes clinic (Iran). Material and Methods In this triple-blind clinical trial, three groups (n=35 patients in each group) were studied. One group was given aloe vera mouthwash, the other group used ginger mouthwash, and the control group was only given normal saline. All the mouthwashes were used 20 ccs three times daily for 14 consecutive days. The symptoms and severity of xerostomia were measured before and after the intervention by the questionnaire proposed by Fox et…
Formation of supramolecular aggregates by hydrogen bonding based on bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid
1997
Hydrogen bonds between bispyrimidine and bisbarbituric acid in equal molar ratio can lead to the formation of supramolecular aggregates. This is established by TEM, IR and DSC measurements. Additionally, WAXS pattern showed that the aggregate is of laminar structure. Both the hydrolysis of this system and termination of the aggregate's growth were studied.
Thermodynamic Behavior of Non-Ionic Tri-block Copolymers in Water at Three Temperatures
2006
Apparent molar volumes (V Φ) of aqueous solutions of some copolymers, based on ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) units, were determined as functions of concentration at three temperatures. Viscosity measurements were also carried out on some of these systems. The effects studied include how the molecular architecture and the molecular weight affect the aggregation of the copolymer, keeping constant the EO/PO ratio. Modeling of the volumetric data yielded the partial molar volume of the copolymer in the standard (V°) and the aggregated (V M) states, as well as the equilibrium constant for micellization and the aggregation number. Analysis of the viscosity data supported the insigh…
Mass action model for solute distribution between water and micelles. Partial molar volumes of butanol and pentanol in dodecyl surfactant solutions
1986
The densities of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol were measured in aqueous solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyldimethylamine oxide and the partial molar volumes at infinite dilution of the alcohols in aqueous surfactants solutions were obtained. The observed trends of this quantity as a function of the surfactant concentration were rationalized using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution between the aqueous and the micellar phase. At the same time, the model was revised to account for the alcohol effect on the surfactant micellization equilibrium. The partial molar volume of alcohols in the aqueous and in the micellar phases and the ratios between the binding constan…
Thermodynamic properties of alcohols in a micellar phase. Binding constants and partial molar volumes of pentanol in sodium dodecylsulfate micelles a…
1984
Densities of the ternary system water-sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS)-pentanol and of the binary systems butanol-octane and pentanol-octane were measured at 15, 25, and 35 °C. The apparent molar volume of pentanol in the ternary system was analyzed using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution in micellar solutions. The partial molar volume of alcohol bound to the micelles and the ratio between the binding constant and the aggregation number of the surfactant are calculated. The partial molar volume binding constant, is discussed in terms of solubilization sites of the alcohol in the micelles whereas the binding constant is compared with that derived from the Nernstian partition const…
The pesticides use and the risk for head and neck cancer: A review of case-control studies
2020
Background Tobacco, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection are the most common risk factors for head and neck cancer (HNC). Despite of this, recent evidences are growing on the association between long-term exposure to pesticides and the risk of chronic diseases, including different types of cancer. The present review evaluated in current literature evidence of an association between exposure to pesticides and the occurrence of HNCs. Material and Methods A literature search of the case-control studies was conducted in the PubMed, Web of science and Cochrane databases. Methodological quality of each study was rated with the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN 50) checklist. Res…
Group contributions to the infinite dilution partial molar volumes of alkanes, alcohols, and glycols in polar organic solvents
1997
Densities of binary mixtures of polar organic solvents with alcohols were measured at 25‡C. The solvents studied were N,N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and formamide while alcohols were butanol, pentanol, hexanol, and 1,4-butanediol. Density measurements of hydrocarbons (from pentane to dodecane and some heptane isomers) + N,N-dimethylformamide were also performed. From these data the apparent molar volumes of alcohols and hydrocarbons as functions of concentration were calculated. The standard partial molar volumes were obtained by extrapolation to infinite dilution and are discussed in terms of group contributions.
Characterization and quantitation of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates and carboxylic acids by capillary electrophoresis with indirect photometric det…
2003
The separation, characterization, and determination of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates (AES) and fatty acids (C10-C16) in background electrolytes (BGEs) containing acetonitrile (ACN)-water mixtures is addressed. Due to inhibition of the ionization of the carboxylate groups, the migration time and the resolution between the fatty acids decreased when the water content of the BGE was reduced, but efficiency and resolution between the AES oligomers improved. The migration times increased and resolution improved by substituting 5% ACN by an equivalent amount of dioxane. A complete separation of the two surfactant classes, up to the AES oligomers with 8 ethylene oxide units (EOs) with respect t…
A systematic review and meta-analysis on the effectiveness of xenograft to prevent periodontal defects after mandibular third molar extraction.
2021
Background To evaluate the use of guided bone regeneration with xenograft to prevent periodontal defect in the distal aspect of the second molar after the surgical removal of the mandibular third molar. Material and Methods Three electronic databases (Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Scopus) were searched in April 2020. Randomized clinical trials in non-smokers and healthy patients, with at least six months follow-up, comparing periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment level, alveolar bone level and adverse events were selected by two independent investigators. The risk of bias assessment of the selected studies was evaluated by means of the Cochrane Collaboration’s Tool. Finally, a meta-a…
