Impact of obesity and aging on crestal alveolar bone height in mice

2018

Obesity and aging are associated with periodontitis, which represents a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, i.e. the periodontium. However, if both risk factors also have a negative impact on crestal alveolar bone in a clinically healthy periodontium, has yet to be elucidated and was analyzed in this in-vivo study. Eight C57BL/6 mice were fed a normal diet during the entire study. Half of these mice were sacrificed at week 19 (group 1: younger lean mice), whereas the other half of the animals were sacrificed at week 25 (group 2: older lean mice). In addition, four mice were fed a high-fat diet until their sacrifice at week 19 (group 3: younger obese mice). Mandible…

Prognostic Factors after Endodontic Microsurgery: A Retrospective Study of 111 Cases with 5 to 9 Years of Follow-up

2021

A study was performed of the healing rate of teeth subjected to endodontic microsurgery after a minimum follow-up of 5 years with an analysis of the influence of different pre- and postoperative factors on the outcome. This was a retrospective study of patients subjected to endodontic microsurgery with the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) for retrograde filling between January 2011 and December 2015. In patients with multiple treated teeth, only 1 random tooth was selected for the statistical analysis. Clinical and radiographic parameters were used to assess healing. Simple binary logistic regression models were used to analyze the influence of patient age and sex, the type of tooth, …

A novel approach to determining physicochemical and absorption properties of 6-fluoroquinolone derivatives: experimental assessment

2002

The ToSS MoDe approach is used to estimate the n-octanol/buffer partition coefficient, the apparent intestinal absorption rate constant and intestinal permeability from a 6-fluoroquinolone data set. Improved in silico methods for predicting a drug's ability to be transported across biological membranes and other biopharmaceutical properties is highly desirable to optimize new drug development. The physicochemical property (Log P) of 26 6-fluoroquinolone derivatives and the absorption properties (Log K(a) and Log P(eff)) of 21 derivatives were well described by the present approach. The models obtained confirm the important role of lipophilicity in the absorption process and its relation wit…

Macaque remains from the early Pliocene of the Iberian Peninsula

2018

Macaques dispersed out of Africa into Eurasia in the framework of a broader intercontinental faunal exchange that coincided in time with the sea level drop associated with the Messinian Salinity Crisis. They are first recorded in Europe (Italy and Spain) by the latest Miocene, being subsequently recorded all over Europe, albeit sparsely, throughout the Pliocene and Pleistocene. These fossil European macaques are attributed to several (sub)species of the extant Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus). In Iberia, fossil macaques are best documented by Macaca sylvanus florentina from various Early Pleistocene sites, whereas their published Pliocene record is very scarce. Here we report the oldest po…

Hypertonic Saline in Conjunction with High-Dose Furosemide Improves Dose-Response Curves in Worsening Refractory Congestive Heart Failure.

2015

Introduction Diuretic responsiveness in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) is better assessed by urine production per unit diuretic dose than by the absolute urine output or diuretic dose. Diuretic resistance arises over time when the plateau rate of sodium and water excretion is reached prior to optimal fluid elimination and may be overcome when hypertonic saline solution (HSS) is added to high doses of furosemide. Methods Forty-two consecutively hospitalized patients with refractory CHF were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to furosemide doses (125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg) so that all patients received intravenous furosemide diluted in 150 ml of normal saline (0.9%) in the first step (0–24 h…

Degree of severity of molar incisor hypomineralization and its relation to dental caries

2017

AbstractMolar incisor hypomineralization is a developmental defect of dental enamel associated with rapid caries progression. In order to discover whether molar incisor hypomineralization predisposes to dental caries, a cross-sectional cohort study was conducted in a sample of 414 children aged between eight and nine years. It was found that 24.2% of the children presented molar incisor hypomineralization. Of these, 72% had a mild form and 28% a severe form. Caries prevalence was greater among the children with severe form (60.7%) than in those with mild form (43.1%) or no molar incisor hypomineralization (45.5%). The caries indices were higher in out molar incisor hypomineralization (1.18)…

Maxillary Sinus Anatomy: A Cadaveric Study With Clinical Implications

2009

This study measured maxillary sinus volume, evaluated the location of the semilunar hiatus in correlation to the nasal floor, and the incidence, location, and height of antral septa and discusses their clinical implications. Maxillary sinus volume was quantified in 65 cadavers (130 sinuses) by water application through the semilunar hiatus and measuring the used amount. The location of the semilunar hiatus was identified as distance from the nasal floor. The septa were counted, evaluated, and the size measured from the antral floor. The medium maxillary sinus volume was 12.5 mL (range, 5-22 mL). The medium location of the semilunar hiatus was 25.6 mm above the nasal floor (range, 18-35 mm).…

Dexketoprofen/tramadol: randomised double-blind trial and confirmation of empirical theory of combination analgesics in acute pain

2015

Background Combination analgesics are effective in acute pain, and a theoretical framework predicts efficacy for combinations. The combination of dexketoprofen and tramadol is untested, but predicted to be highly effective. Methods This was a randomised, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, single-dose trial in patients with moderate or severe pain following third molar extraction. There were ten treatment arms, including dexketoprofen trometamol (12.5 mg and 25 mg) and tramadol hydrochloride (37.5 mg and 75 mg), given as four different fixed combinations and single components, with ibuprofen 400 mg as active control as well as a placebo control. The study objecti…

4-Hydroxynonenal, a lipid peroxidation product, induces relaxation of human cerebral arteries.

1994

The relaxant effect of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), a lipid peroxidation product, on human cerebral arteries was studied. Addition of 4-HNE to artery rings promoted no contraction, and after stimulation with prostaglandin F2α (PFG2α; 10−7-3 × 10−6 M), 100% relaxation was obtained with 3 × 10−5 M 4-HNE. Inhibition of nitric oxide formation with NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (l-NAME; (10−4 M), as well as prostaglandin synthesis with indomethacin (3 × 10−6 M), partially prevented 4-HNE-induced relaxation, but each of these substances separately failed to inhibit complete relaxation. Addition of both inhibitors together reduced 4-HNE-induced relaxation to ≈50%, but relaxation cou…

MATRICES OF A HYDROPHOBICALLY FUNCTIONALIZED HYALURONIC ACID DERIVATIVE FOR THE LOCOREGIONAL TUMOUR TREATMENT

2015

A hyaluronic acid (HA) derivative bearing octadecylamine and acylhydrazine functionalities has been here employed for the production of a paclitaxel delivering matrix for locoregional chemotherapy. Through a strategy consisting in a powder compression and a plasticization with a mixture water/ethanol, a physically assembled biomaterial, stable in solutions with physiologic ionic strengths, has been produced. Two different drug loading strategies have been adopted, by using paclitaxel as chemotherapic agent, and obtained samples have been assayed in terms of release in enhanced solubility conditions and in vitro and in vivo tumoural cytotoxicity. In particular sample with the best releasing …
