Study Design: This retrospective study examined panoramic radiographs and clinical records of 9,000 patients who presented consecutively at our oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics between January 1998 and January 2009. In addition to demographic data (patient sex and age), data was compiled on the number and location of impacted missing maxillary and mandibular premolars, retained deciduous molars, associated pathologies and symptoms, and treatment methods. Results: A total of 105 impacted maxillary or mandibular premolars were o…

The prevalence of root dilacerations in a Turkish population

2009

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of root dilaceration in a Turkish dental patient population with respect to sexes and dental localization in relation between sex and this anomaly. Study Design: A retrospective study was performed using periapical radiography of 2,124 patients ranging in age from 15 to 65. All data (age, sex and systemic disease or syndrome) was obtained from the files. These patients were analyzed for root dilaceration. Descriptive characteristics of sexes, jaws, and dental localization were recorded. The Pearson chi-squared test was used. Results: Of 2,251 patients, 214 (9.5%) had root dilaceration. Root dilacerations were determined in 27…

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain after impacted third molar surgery.

2018

Background The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on pain after the impacted third molar surgery. Material and Methods The study was carried out on 30 patients attending the outpatient department of the oral and maxillofacial surgery. Both sides’ impacted mandibular third molars were taken into consideration, and a total of 60 impacted third molars were undergone surgical extraction. After the first surgery, patients were given analgesic, antibiotics, and mouthwash as a routine treatment procedure. Following the second surgery, TENS was applied over the painful area of the cheek for patients in addition to routine tr…

Evaluation of the surgical difficulty in lower third molar extraction.

2009

The ability to predict the surgical difficulty of lower third molar extraction facilitates the design of treatment plans by minimizing complications and improving the preparation of patients and assistants in terms of the postoperative management of inflammation and pain. The aims of this study were to evaluate the value of panoramic radiographs in predicting lower third molar extraction difficulty and technique and to determine if the experience of the practitioner had any influence on this predictive ability. Fourteen dental practitioners with varying levels of experience evaluate the difficulty of lower third molar extraction in a group of patients using a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS…

Comparative trial between the use of amoxicillin and amoxicillin clavulanate in the removal of third molars

2014

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the use of amoxicillin (1g) vs amoxicillin and clavulanate (875/125mg) after extraction of retained third molars for prevention of infectious complications. Study Design: The study involved 546 patients attending for removal a retained third molar and divided in to two groups: Group 1 - amoxicillin and clavunate (875/125mg) group (n=257) and Group 2 - amoxicillin (1g) group (n=289). All patients were recalled for investigating the possibility of infection, presence of diarrhea and further analgesic intake. Results: From a total of 546 patients, the frequency of infection was 1.4%, without no statistically differences be - tween the two gr…

Oroantral communications : a retrospective analysis

2009

Objetive. To analyze characteristics, clinical evolution and surgical techniques of oroantral communication (OAC). Study Design. We included all patients operated at the University Central Hospital (Oviedo, Spain) between 1996 and 2007. The variables assessed were age, sex, medical history, OAC size, sinus disease, surgical technique, duration of hospitalization and post-surgical evolution. Results. We analyzed 12 patients (7 men and 5 women) with an average age of 47.5 years. The most frequent cause of oroantral communication was the extraction of the first upper molar. The average size of fistula was 0.9 cm. Buccal flap repair was used in 7 patients, palatal rotation-advancement flap in 4…

Evaluation of the anaesthetic properties and tolerance of 1:100,000 articaine versus 1:100,000 lidocaine. : a comparative study in surgery of the low…

2011

Objectives: To evaluate the anaesthetic properties and tolerance of articaine versus lidocaine at equal vasoconstrictor concentration. Study Design: A total of 96 male and female patients who underwent surgical treatment of the lower third molar participated. Patients were randomly assigned to articaine hydrochloride with epinephrine 1:100,000 and lidocaine hydrochloride with epinephrine 1:100,000. The variables analysed were latency period, duration of anaesthetic effect, tolerance and adverse reactions. Results: Both the latency period and the duration of anaesthetic effect were greater for articaine, although the differences were not statistically significant. Latency: mean difference of…

Effect of intra-alveolar placement of 0.2% chlorhexidine bioadhesive gel on the incidence of alveolar osteitis following the extraction of mandibular…

2014

Alveolar osteitis (AO) is a common complication after third molar surgery. One of the most studied agents in its prevention is chlorhexidine (CHX), which has proved to be effective. Objectives: The aim of this randomized double-blind clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of 0.2% bioadhesive chlorhexidine gel placed intra-alveolar in the prevention of AO after the extraction of mandibular third molars and to analyze the impact of risk factors such as smoking and oral contraceptives in the development of AO. Study Design: The study was a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial performed in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit of Hospital Vall d’Hebron and was approved by the Ethics Committee. A…
