A study on the aminomercuration-nucleophilic demercuration of --1,5-cyclooctadiene; stereoselective synthesis of 2,6-disubstituted-9-aza bicyclo[3.3.…

1992

Abstract The aminomercuration of cis - cis -1,5-Cyclooctadiene with a series of mercury(II) salts followed by nucleophilic displacement of mercury by aromatic amines, water and nitrate ion has been studied. As a result, bicyclic triamines, aminoalcohols and nitrate esters have been obtained respectively in clean processes which occur under total stereoelectronic control by involvement of a tricyclic aziridium ion to afford a single stereoisomer in each case. The influence of the counter ion and the basicity of the amine on the tandem aminomercuration-demercuration is discussed.

Crystal structure and morphology of polymers from solid-state reactions

1975

Some solid-state reactions which give rise to the formation of polymer crystals are discussed and the observation of the nascent polymer morphology is used as a guide-line to learn about the reaction mechanism of solid-state polymerizations. Examples for the following three different mechanisms are treated in detail: (a) crystallization succeeding polymerization, (b) simultaneous polymerization and crystallization, and (c) polymerization in solid solution. The nascent morphology of poly(alkylene)s obtained by Ziegler-Natta catalysis is taken as an example for crystallization succeeding polymerization. Another example is the cationic polymerization of 1,3,5-trioxane from solution. In this ca…

Oxyfunctionalization of Aliphatic Esters by Methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane

1996

The oxidation of lineal, cyclic, and bicyclic aliphatic p-chlorobenzoic and p-chorobenzenesulfonic acid esters 2 with methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane (TFDO) (1) occurs at positions in the hydrocarbon chain distant from the directing group with a significant degree of selectivity to give the corresponding keto or hydroxy esters. Compounds 2 are relatively deactivated with respect to this oxidation due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the ester moiety. Methylene Cα−H and Cβ−H bonds remain unchanged in all cases, but tertiary Cβ−H bonds undergo oxidation with TFDO (1). Stereoelectronic factors are used to explain the faster reaction rate in competition experiments for the oxidation of en…

Interaction of Oxygen Partial Pressure and Energy Metabolism with the Relaxation Rate of Inorganic Phosphate: A 31P NMR Study

1990

It is well known that oxygen molecules present in liquid or solid samples can shorten NMR spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of the nucleus under investigation. Several studies have shown large decrements of 1H, 13C, and 19F relaxation times mediated by the O2 molecule (Lees and Muller, 1961; Ohuchi et al., 1979; Fishman et al., 1989). The positions of the 3lp atoms in phosphate compounds are stereometrically similar to some 13C atoms in organic compounds, and thus an effect of oxygen on the 31P T1 is expected. Recently, we have shown (Okunieff et al., 1988) that oxygen breathing can significantly reduce the T1 of 31p in the inorganic phosphate molecule (Pi). The degree to which this change…

Zero- to Ultralow-Field NMR Spectroscopy of Small Biomolecules.

2021

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a well-established analytical technique used to study chemicals and their transformations. However, high-field NMR spectroscopy necessitates advanced infrastructure, and even cryogen-free benchtop NMR spectrometers cannot be readily assembled from commercially available components. We demonstrate construction of a portable zero-field NMR spectrometer employing a commercially available magnetometer and investigate its applications in analytical chemistry. In particular, J-spectra of small representative biomolecules [13C]-formic acid, [1-13C]-glycine, [2,3-13C]-fumarate, and [1-13C]-d-glucose were acquired, and an approach relying on the prese…

Aggregation Processes and Formation of Silico-calco-alkaline Gels under High Ionic Strength

2002

This paper presents a systematic in situ study of the process of formation of silico-calco-alkaline gels starting from a liquid colloidal solution containing different alkaline ions and different calcium concentration until the final gel state. The combined use of X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) and dynamical rheometry techniques lead to a consistent description of the structure of the aggregates and of the mechanisms of aggregation involved in gel formation. SAS results indicate that the aggregates are fractal objects, their structure strongly depending on calcium ion concentration. The differences in gelation kinetics for systems containing different alkaline ions were attr…

ChemInform Abstract: trans- and cis-Bicyclo(n.1.0)alk-2-ynes of Medium Ring Size.

2010

Starting from cycloalkenes, the cis- or trans-cyclopropano anellated cycloalkynes 2–7 of medium ring size were synthesized. The triple bonds were introduced in the final reaction step either by the fragmentation of the corresponding 1,2,3-selenadiazoles or by direct dehydration of a ketone (Scheme 2). The cis-fused bicycles 2 and 3 and the trans-fused bicycles 5, 6 and 7 could be isolated in a pure state. The intermediary existence of the most strained system trans-bicyclo[7.1.0]dec-2-yne (4) was proven by trapping reactions.

Self-Diffusion of Small Molecules into Rubbery Polymers: A Lattice Free-Volume Theory

2010

In the framework of the Free Volume Theory, a new equation was derived for the evaluation of self-diffusion coefficients of small molecules in polymers above the mixture glass transition temperature. The derivation of the equation turned out to be straightforward once the equivalence between the free-volume and the unoccupied volume given by Thermodynamic Lattice Theories is assumed. A parameter evaluation scheme is proposed, which is substantially simpler compared to the conventional Vrentas-Duda approach, even without losing generality. The key assumption is discussed and its consistency is verified from a numerical viewpoint. A comparison with experimental solvent self-diffusion coeffici…

Chemistry of Desiccant Properties of Carbohydrate Polymers as Studied by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ie302199k The combination frequency of water molecule in near-infrared spectroscopy is very useful for studying water molecular adsorption on solid surfaces. The absorption is purely from water molecules, and the variation in the absorption bands reflects the change in the environment of the water molecules on a surface. This variation, in turn, reflects the nature of the functional groups on the surface. Recently, Christy used this information in combination with second-derivative techniques to probe the surface of hydrothermally tre…
