Heavy metal ion induction of adhesion molecules and cytokines in human endothelial cells: the role of NF-kappaB, I kappaB-alpha and AP-1.
1997
We analyzed the influence of heavy-metal ions on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) in comparison to proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Adhesion molecule and cytokine expressions are upregulated by heavy-metal exposure. Expression of E-selectin on the cell surface was strongly induced by 1-mM concentrations of NiCl2 and CoCl2, whereas ZnCl2 and CrCl3 had no influence. Furthermore, it is shown that NiCl2 induces mRNA expression of E-selectin, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, IL-6 and IL-8 in a 1-mM concentration. The transcription factor NF-kappaB is known to be involved in the regulation of adhesion molecule expression in endothelial …
Increased expression of ICAM-1, E-selectin, and VCAM-1 by cultured human endothelial cells upon exposure to haptens.
1992
Contact allergens induce several accessory signals which promote the activation of antigen-specific T cells. One of these signals is the increased expression of adhesion molecules on antigen-presenting cells and endothelial cells. Epicutaneous application of non-toxic doses of 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) onto the skin of non-sensitized individuals elicited progressive staining for ICAM-1 on dermal microvascular endothelial cells. To elucidate the question of whether contact allergens can act directly on endothelial cells to elevate their expression of surface structures that bind leukocytes, confluent monolayers of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were incubated with the contact a…
Comparative study assessing effects of sonic hedgehog and VEGF in a human co-culture model for bone vascularisation strategies.
2011
The morphogen sonic hedgehog (Shh) seems to mediate adult repair processes in bone regeneration and vascularisation. In this study we investigated the effects of Shh on co-cultures consisting of human primary osteoblasts and outgrowth endothelial cells in terms of angiogenic activation and vessel maturation in comparison to the treatment with the commonly used proangiogenic factor, VEGF. Both, stimulation with VEGF or Shh, leads to an increase in the formation of microvessel-like structures compared to untreated controls. In contrast to VEGF, proangiogenic effects by Shh could already be observed after 24 h of treatment. Nevertheless, after 14 days the angiogenic activity of OEC was compara…
Chapter 7 - Sensory interactions in wine: effect of nonvolatile molecules on wine aroma and volatiles on Taste/Astringency perception
2012
International audience; It is widely accepted that sensory interactions can, and do, occur during wine consumption. To this concern, many studies have dealt with aroma-taste interactions which have been attributed to physicochemical interactions in the product itself, interactions at the receptor level or cognitive interactions. Although the understanding of these interactions has grown during last years and it has been demonstrated that they are strongly product-dependent, investigations have seldom gone beyond that of model solutions with a reduced number of components (volatile and/or nonvolatile molecules). Recently some investigations carried out in this field have been conducted with …
Applications of light-matter interaction in nanosciences
2009
In this thesis, light matter interaction in nanoscale has been studied from various aspects. The interaction between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and optically active organic molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Sulforhodamine 101 and Coumarine 30) and semiconducting nanocrystals (quantum dots) is studied in the weak coupling regime. In particular, a photon-SPP-photon conversion with spatially separated inand outcoupling was demonstrated by using molecules. Also, a frequency downconversion for propagating SPPs was presented by utilization of vibrational relaxation of organic molecules. A strong coupling regime was reached for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and SPP despite the broad absorption linewidth of R6G…
The foaming properties of camel and bovine whey: The impact of pH and heat treatment
2018
International audience; he effect of heat treatment (70 degrees C or 90 degrees C for 30 min) on the foaming and interfacial properties of acid and sweet whey obtained from bovine and camel fresh milk was examined. The maximum foamability and foam stability were observed for acid whey when compared to sweet whey for both milks, with higher values for the camel whey. This behavior for acid whey was explained by the proximity of the pI of whey protein (4.9-5.2), where proteins were found to carry the lowest negative charge as confirmed by the zeta potential measurements. Interfacial properties of acid camel whey and acid bovine whey were preserved at air water interface even after a heat trea…
Resonant activation in polymer translocation: new insights into the escape dynamics of molecules driven by an oscillating field
2010
The translocation of molecules across cellular membranes or through synthetic nanopores is strongly affected by thermal fluctuations. In this work we study how the dynamics of a polymer in a noisy environment changes when the translocation process is driven by an oscillating electric field. An improved version of the Rouse model for a flexible polymer has been adopted to mimic the molecular dynamics, by taking into account the harmonic interactions between adjacent monomers and the excluded-volume effect by introducing a Lennard–Jones potential between all beads. A bending recoil torque has also been included in our model. The polymer dynamics is simulated in a two-dimensional domain by num…
Excitonic States in Semiconducting Two-dimensional Perovskites
2018
Hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites have emerged as efficient semiconductor materials for applications in photovoltaic solar cells with conversion efficiency above 20 \%. Recent experiments have synthesized ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) organic perovskites with optical properties similar to those of 2D materials like monolayer MoS$_2$: large exciton binding energy and excitonic effects at room temperature. In addition, 2D perovskites are synthesized with a simple fabrication process with potential low-cost and large-scale manufacture. Up to now, state-of-the-art simulations of the excitonic states have been limited to the study of bulk organic perovskites. A large number of atoms in the …
