Monitoring and Market Power in Loan Markets
2000
Whether or not banks are engaged in ex ante monitoring of customers may have important consequences for the whole economy. We approach this question via a model in which banks can invest in either information acquisition or market power (product differentiation). The two alternatives generate different predictions, which are tested using panel data on Finnish local banks. We find evidence that banks’ investments in branch networks and human capital (personnel) contribute to information acquisition but not to market power. We also find that managing customers’ money transactions enhances banks ability to control their lending risks.
The Real Effect of Financial Crises in the European Transition Economies
2009
The aim of this work is to assess the impact of financial crises on output for 11 European transition economies (CEECs). The results suggest that financial crises have a significant and permanent effect, lowering long-term output by about 17 percent. The effect is more important in smaller countries, with relative higher dependence on external financing, and in which the banking sector noticed more important financial disequilibria. We also found that fiscal policy measures have been the most efficient tools in dealing with the crises, while the role of monetary policy instruments has been rather blinded. Exchange rate resulted to be more a propagator than a crises absorber, while the IMF c…
Finansinis stabilumas ir koncentracija: besivystančios Europos tyrimas
2016
Value Creation When Acquiring Public vs Private Firms. Spanish Evidence
2013
We investigate shareholder value creation of Spanish listed firms in response to announcements of acquisitions of unlisted companies and compare this experience to the purchase of listed firms over the period 1991–2011. Similar to foreign markets, acquirers of listed targets earn insignificant average abnormal returns. However, acquirers of listed targets that perform a first bid show significant negative abnormal returns. Acquirers of unlisted targets gain significant positive average abnormal returns. When we relate these results to company and transaction characteristics our evidence suggests that the listing status effect is mainly associated with the fact that unlisted firms tend to be…
The Effects of Internationalization on CEO Compensation
2004
This study examines the relation between the internationalization of firms and CEO compensation. Starting from a sample of Norwegian and Swedish listed firms, we analyze the effects of internationalization as manifest in the capital market (international cross-listing), the market for corporate control (foreign board membership), and the product and service market (export and foreign sales). We conclude that all three markets contribute positively to the compensation level of CEOs. We argue that part of the higher CEO compensation in internationally oriented firms - as compared to less internationalized firms within the same country - reflects a risk premium for reduction in job security.Pu…
A Model for Estimating Cash Flows in Firms Backed by Venture Capital
2013
Venture Capital only backs firms for a short period of time. When the time to exit arrives, the firm must inevitably be valued in order to obtain a basis for negotiating the exit price. Discounted cash flow is precisely one of the valuation methods that are used most by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
On the Relevance of Agency Conflicts in SME Debt Maturity Structure
2015
Previous theoretical research asserts that an optimal policy of debt maturity structure mitigates the various agency conflicts that arise through debt contracts. We test this hypothesis on Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), which are very sensitive to agency problems. Such problems mainly arise between owners and debt providers, due to SMEs recording high growth and having few fixed assets and informational asymmetry. We provide evidence on the relevant effect of underinvestment, asset substitution, and overinvestment problems on SME debt structure. Results appear to be robust to both the endogeneity problem of explanatory variables and the censored dependent variable.
Exchange Rate and Inflation Risk Premia in the UME
2012
This paper tests the effects of exchange rate and inflation risk factors on asset pricing in the European Union (EU) stock markets. This investigation is motivated by the results of Vassalou (2000) [Journal of International Money and Finance, 19, 433-70] showing that both exchange rate and foreign inflation are generally priced in equity returns, and the opportunity to evaluate the causality between these sources of risk after the elimination of the EU currency risks because of the adoption of the single currency. Our results show that both exchange rate and inflation risks are significantly priced in the pre- and post-euro periods. Moreover, the size of exchange rate and inflation risk pre…
Reshaping Monetary Policy after the Great Crash: John H. Williams at the NY FED
2020
John H. Williams was an influential economist and central banker in the interwar years. A Harvard University professor since 1929 specialized in international trade and monetary economics, he joined the NY Fed in 1933 and became its vice-President in 1936. This paper aims to provide a general assessment of Williams’ contributions to monetary and fiscal policy during his tenure at the NY FED. We shall try to do so by following a twofold perspective: i. establish connections between Williams’ more theoretical works, his interpretations of the great depression and some policy decisions enacted by the FED in the 1930s; ii. provide new archival evidence on what was the part Williams played in th…
Moving closer? Comparing regional adjustments to shocks in EMU and the United States
2020
Highlights • Interstate migration is the main adjustment channel to labor demand shocks for the US. • EMU countries adjust through changes in labor force participation and unemployment. • Price flexibility is more important as a shock absorber for EMU. • Risk-sharing mechanisms have been more effective in the US than in the EMU. • The strength of these channels has increased for EMU ad declined for the United States.
