PREVALENCE OF ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF NOCTURNAL BLOOD PRESSURE PROFILE OF ASTHMA PATIENTS ACCORDING TO THERAPY AND SEVERITY OF T…
2020
Background: several studies report an increased risk for asthmatic subjects to develop arterial hypertension and the relationship between these two diseases, frequently co-existing, still has some unclear aspects. Methods: The BADA (blood pressure levels, clinical features and markers of subclinical cardiovascular damage of asthma patients) study is aimed to evaluate the prevalence of the cardiovascular comorbidities of asthma and their impact on the clinical outcome. The main exclusion criteria were the presence of other respiratory diseases, current smoking, any contraindication to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Results: The overall percentage of asthmatics having also hyper…
Tackling wicked problems in performance management and governance of public health: an empirical analysis of COVID-19 vaccination strategies
2023
PurposePublic health strategies and activities are intrinsically complex. According to the literature, this “wickedness” depends on the different interests and expectations of the stakeholders and the community, the fragmented governance of the related services and the challenges in measuring and assessing public health outcomes. Existent performance measures and management systems for public health are not designed to cope with wickedness since they are mainly focused on inputs and outputs, neglecting broader outcomes because of their long-term impact and the poor accountability of results. This research aims to tackle this shortfall by adopting a dynamic performance management (DPM) appro…
Beyond Subsidies: A Study of Sustainable Public Subordinated Debt in Spain
2019
Evidence from business shows that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are fragile. They suffer from a high mortality rate that primarily owes to difficulties in securing financing as a result of major information asymmetries. Despite these difficulties, SMEs provide the economic backbone of all economically developed countries. Aware of the key role of SMEs in national economic stability and of the financial problems that SMEs face, governments have designed a range of financial and tax measures to protect them. These financial measures include a highly specific form of public financing called subordinated debt. This concept refers to debt with the lowest credit seniority, just befor…
Exploring twitter for csr disclosure: influence of ceo and firm characteristics in latin american companies
2018
Social networks, which are characterised by accessibility and interactivity, offer great potential for dialogue between companies and stakeholders, for example as platforms for publishing information on aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this paper, we use a synthetic index to analyse levels of CSR disclosure via Twitter, and identify explanatory variables of this disclosure by studying the demographic characteristics of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and of the company. This synthetic index was based on data for 93 companies located in the four countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru), using categories based on the 2016 Global Reporting Ini…
Badania nad potencjalnym wykorzystaniem pluskwiaków różnoskrzydłych (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) w bioindykacji i monitoringu przyrodniczym
2023
This paper presented the results of the studies on true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) alongside evaluating their potential usefulness in biomonitoring and bioindication. The studies were carried out in May and August of 2017. Three research sites situated at various distances from the full-scale plants (Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn SA, Zakłady Chemiczne Petrochemia-Blachownia SA, Zakłady Koksownicze ArcelorMittal Poland Zdzieszowice) and the control area out of reach of the emission of chemical pollutants, i.e. the meadows in the Chrząstowice area of Natura 2000, have been selected for studies. All studied meadows were classified within the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class. As a resu…
Electro-conversion as sustainable method for the fine chemical production from the biopolymer lignin
2018
Lignin, one of the most abundant polymers in nature, qualifies itself by the polyphenolic structure as potential renewable feedstock for the production of bio-based aromatic fine chemicals. However, the natural complexity and degradation stability of lignin make the depolymerization a highly challenging task. Several efforts have been pursued for the selective degradation of the biopolymer into suitable compounds. However, there are only a few technical approaches for the degradation of lignin to aromatic fine chemicals. Organic electrosynthesis is the synthetic method that enables the direct use of electricity for the production of valuable compounds. Moreover, electro-organic synthesis re…
The PAH composition in limpets (Patella vulgate L.) from the coasts of Sicily (Italy)
2006
This article examines the presence, distribution, nature and sources of 19 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), in Patellae (patella vulgate L.) and seaweed (vulva) sampled in different stations of Sicilian coastal environments and analyzed for their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content. Analysis was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with selected ion monitoring (SIM), after saponification of the sample and clean up of the extract. In the limpets the total concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from 34 to 750 μg/Kg of dry matrix. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the replicas on the concentrations of individual compounds ranged fr…
The Role of Lectins in Finfish: A Review
2019
The immune system of vertebrates involves both innate and acquired immune responses. The innate immunity is more generalized with robust response whereas the other has a highly specific response to infectious pathogens. Because of the lack of specialized lymphatic organs, innate immunity is an important mode of defense in fishes. The less specific innate immune system acts mainly through complement pathway which depends on pattern-based recognition of “self” and “non-self” targets by host lectins and associated proteins. This ultimately results in the clearance of target cells. Lectins are glycoproteins which possess at least one carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) that specifically and r…
Copper Isotope Fractionation during Complexation with Insolubilized Humic Acid
2010
The bioavailability, mobility, and toxicity of Cu depend on Cu speciation in solution. In natural systems like soils, sediments, lakes, and river waters, organo-Cu complexes are the dominating species. Organo-complexation of Cu may cause a fractionation of stable Cu isotopes. The knowledge of Cu isotope fractionation during sorption on humic acid may help to better understand Cu isotope fractionation in natural environments and thus facilitate the use of Cu stable isotope ratios (delta(65)Cu) as tracer of the fate of Cu in the environment. We therefore studied Cu isotope fractionation during complexation with insolubilized humic acid (IHA) as a surrogate of humic acid in soil organic matter…
