Neuronal and neuroendocrine mechanisms of social rank and stress coping in teleost fish
2015
Fights for social dominance are stressful and results in an activation of the brain serotonergic system. Subordinate animals in an established dominance hierarchy are characterized by a chronic elevation of brain serotonergic activity, an effect that seems to mediate the behavioural inhibition observed in these animals. By contrast, social dominance has been associated with elevated dopaminergic activity, and dopamine (DA) has behavioural effects to some extent opposing those of serotonin (5HT). In addition to effects of the social environment, brain monoaminergic functions are controlled by genetic factors. For instance, zebrafish (Danio rerio) classified as bold, showing a propensity for …
Essential oils as multi-target compounds for novel food safety strategies
This research work has been developed in the context of the potencial applications of essential oils as multi-target compounds for novel food safety strategies, such as active packaging technologies. Essential oils are aromatic oils derived from plants and usually extracted by hydrodistillation when intended to be used in food. There is an increasing interest in the antimicrobial properties of essential oils due to the possibility of using them to replace ‘synthetic’ preservatives in food or, in general, to reduce viable numbers of pathogens along the food chain.
Estudi de la immunogenicitat de Norovirus humans i de la seua interacció amb receptors cel·lulars
2014
Noroviruses (NoVs) are the main cause of sporadic cases and outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (Tam et al., 2012; Gastanaduy et al., 2013) and are globally associated with a large burden of disease (Patel et al., 2008). NoVs are a highly diverse group of viruses, although over the past two decades most reported NoV outbreaks and epidemics have been caused by NoV GII.4 genotype. Phylogenetic analyses of the GII.4 strains circulating in the last 20 years have shown that this genotype can be divided into distinct variants, which peak and wane over time in a similar pattern to that described for influenza viruses (Buesa et al., 2008; Siebenga et al., 2009; Koelle et al., 2006). In recent years …
Composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Achillea falcata L. (Asteraceae).
2005
The composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Achillea falcata L. (Asteraceae) growing wild in Lebanon was analysed by GC and GC–MS; 58 compounds, representing 94.4% of the oil, were identified. Isomers of the cyclobutane ethanol, 1-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl), grandisol (21.4%) and fragranol (16.8%) were the main components of the oil. Also abundant were artemisia ketone (5.2%), terpinen-4-ol (4.5%) and 1,8-cineole (4.0%). The essential oil shows inhibitory activity mainly against Gram-positive bacteria.
A synthetic derivative of antimicrobial peptide holothuroidin 2 from mediterranean sea cucumber (Holothuria tubulosa) in the control of Listeria mono…
2019
Due to the limited number of available antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered antimicrobial candidates to fight difficult-to-treat infections such as those associated with biofilms. Marine environments are precious sources of AMPs, as shown by the recent discovery of antibiofilm properties of Holothuroidin 2 (H2), an AMP produced by the Mediterranean sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa. In this study, we considered the properties of a new H2 derivative, named H2d, and we tested it against seven strains of the dangerous foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. This peptide was more active than H2 in inhibiting the growth of planktonic L. monocytogenes and was able to interf…
Chemical composition, antioxidant and anticholinesterase activity of the essential oil of algerian cachrys sicula L
2021
In this work, in order to explore a new Algerian medicinal plant used in traditional medicine, the essential oil of the leaves of Cachrys sicula L. (Apiaceae) collected from Algeria, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty-two compounds were identified accounting for 98.6% of the total oil, which is characterized by a high content of monoterpene hydrocarbons (74.8%). The main constituents of the essential oil were β-pinene (17.9%), sabinene (17.8%), myrcene (12%), and α-pinene (11.4%). In vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil was assayed by three methods, namely ABTS•+, metal chelating, and DPPH• assays. The antioxidant activity of the oil was higher in the AB…
Smad7 controls resistance of colitogenic T cells to regulatory T cell-mediated suppression.
2008
Background & Aims Foxp3-expressing regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a key role in the maintenance of the gut immune homeostasis, and an intact transforming growth factor (TGF)-β signaling is required for their function. In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the TGF-β signaling is impaired because of high expression of the inhibitory molecule Smad7. Although no intrinsic defects in Tregs function have been shown in IBD, it is still unknown whether colitogenic T cells are susceptible to Treg-mediated suppression. In this study, we have investigated whether IBD mucosal CD4+ T cells are resistant to Tregs and whether Smad7 is involved in this process. Methods IBD lamina propria mononuclear cells …
A metal-responsive interdigitated bilayer for selective quantification of mercury( ii ) traces by surface plasmon resonance
2016
Reusable surface plasmon resonance chips allowing the quantitative and selective detection of mercury(II) ions in water at the 0.01 nM level are reported. The surface-modified gold sensor consists of a rarefied self-assembled monolayer of octanethiol topped with a Langmuir–Blodgett monolayer of an amphiphilic and highly-specific chelator. The interdigitated architecture confers to the bilayer a high packing density, surface coverage, and binding-group accessibility.

Looking for the best immune-checkpoint inhibitor in pre-treated NSCLC patients: An indirect comparison between nivolumab, pembrolizumab and atezolizu…
2017
Immune-checkpoint inhibitors represent the new standard of care in patients with advanced NSCLC who progressed after first-line treatment. This work aim to assess any difference in both efficacy and safety profiles among Nivolumab, Pembrolizumab and Atezolizumab in pre-treated NSCLC patients. Randomized clinical trials comparing immune-checkpoint inhibitor versus docetaxel in pre-treated patients with advanced NSCLC were included and direct comparison meta-analysis of selected trials have been performed. Subsequently the summary estimates of Nivolumab, Pembrolizumab and Atezolizumab emerging from the direct meta-analysis were selected to provide the pooled estimates of hazard ratio (HR) and…
