Monoterpenes in grape juice and wines.

The importance of monoterpenes on varietal flavour of wines has been reviewed. These compounds were mainly found linked to sugar moieties in the grape juice and wines, showing no olfactive characteristics. In this way, mechanisms to liberate terpenes were studied, making a comparative study between acidic and enzymic hydrolysis of terpene glycosides. Finally, analytical techniques developed to study these compounds, in both free or glycosidically forms, and also to fractionate glycosidic precursors, have been discussed.
Dynamics of macromolecules grafted in spherical brushes under good solvent conditions

Spherical polymer brushes have a structure intermediate between star polymers and polymer brushes on flat substrates, and are important building blocks of polymer nanoparticles. Molecular dynamics simulations are presented for isolated spherical polymer brushes under good solvent conditions, varying the grafting density as well as the chain length, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model of flexible chains. We complement previous work on the static properties of the same model by analyzing the chain dynamics, studying the motions of monomers in relation to their position along the grafted chains, and extract suitable relaxation times. From the cell membranes of the sponge Geodia cydonium a component was isolated and purified which inhibits the aggregation factor isolated from the same source; the component was termed anti-aggregation receptor. This molecule was characterized as a glycoprotein (54% neutral carbohydrate) and its molecular weight is in the range of 180,000 One biological site of the anti-aggregation receptor was determined to be D-galactose. Indirect evidence presented seems to indicate that this molecule is present in an active form in aggregation-deficient cells and absent in aggregation-susceptible cells.

Abstract Legumes increase the plant-available N pool in soil, but might also increase NO3− leaching to groundwater. To minimize NO3− leaching, N-release processes and the contribution of legumes to NO3− concentrations in soil must be known. Our objectives were (1) to quantify NO3−-N export to >0.3 m soil depth from three legume monocultures (Medicago x varia Martyn, Onobrychis viciifolia Scop., Lathyrus pratensis L.) and from three bare ground plots. Two new mu-methoxo-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes with a N-substituted sulfonamide, [Cu(mu-OMe)(L)(NH(3))](2) (1) and [Cu(mu-OMe)(L)(DMSO)](2) (2) [HL, N-2-(4-methylbenzothiazole)benzenesulfonamide], have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray difraction analyses. An organic/inorganic hybrid salt is obtained by combination of the photochromic nitroprusside complex with the organic donor TTF. The organic part shows an unprecedented 2D organization formed by an orthogonal arrangement of TTF hexamers and monomers. However, the donor layers are formed by pairs of moderately interacting dimeric (TTF)22+ units surrounded by neutral TTF molecules in such a way that the charge is localized and the compound is a semiconductor. Short contacts between the organic layers and the nitroprusside anions are present that may affect the photophysical properties of the nitroprusside.
