Phonon-induced spin relaxation of conduction electrons in silicon crystals

2014

Experimental works managing electrical injection of spin polarization in n-type and p-type silicon have been recently carried out up to room-temperature. In spite of these promising experimental results, a comprehensive theoretical framework concerning the influence of transport conditions on phonon-induced electron spin depolarization in silicon structures, in a wide range of values of lattice temperature, doping concentration and amplitude of external fields, is still at a developing stage. In order to investigate the spin transport of conduction electrons in lightly doped n-type Si crystals, a set of semiclassical multiparticle Monte Carlo simulations has been carried out. The mean spin …

Competing species system as a qualitative model of radiation therapy

2016

To examine complex features of tumor dynamics we analyze a competing-species lattice model that takes into account the competition for nutrients or space as well as interaction with therapeutic factors such as drugs or radiation. Our model might be interpreted as a certain prey–predator system having three trophic layers: (i) the basal species that might be interpreted as nutrients; (ii) normal and tumor cells that consume nutrients, and (iii) therapeutic factors that might kill either nutrient, normal or tumor cells. Using a wide spectrum of parameters we examined survival of our species and tried to identify the corresponding dynamical regimes. It was found that the radiotherapy influence…

Simplified model to evaluate the fate of micropollutants in an integrated urban drainage system: sensitivity analysis

2016

The paper presents the sensitivity analysis of an integrated urban water quality system by means of the global sensitivity analysis (GSA). Specifically, an home-made integrated model developed in previous studies has been modified in order to include the micropollutant assessment (namely, sulfamethoxazole - SMX). The model takes into account also the interactions between the three components of the system: sewer system (SS), wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the receiving water body (RWB). The analysis has been applied to an experimental catchment nearby Palermo (Italy): the Nocella catchment. Five scenarios each characterized by different combinations of sub-systems (i.e., SS, WWTP and…

Dynamics of surface of lipid membranes: theoretical considerations and the ESR experiment.

2016

The effect of the surface layer of model membranes on their physical properties was discussed in this paper. The research involved a physical ESR experiment with the use of spin probes and computer simulation based on the Monte Carlo technique. Liposomes formed during the process of sonication of lecithin were scanned in an ESR spectrometer. The membrane surface layer model, represented by the system of electric dipoles arranged in rectangular or hexagonal matrices, was studied. The final states of computer simulations were presented as textures. It was found that in the gel phase some ordered domain structures are formed, while in the liquid–crystal phase we got complex textures comprising…

Formation of irreversibly bound annexin A1 protein domains on POPC/POPS solid supported membranes

2008

AbstractThe specific interaction of annexin A1 with phospholipid bilayers is scrutinized by means of scanning force and fluorescence microscopy, quartz crystal microbalance, ellipsometry, and modeled by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that POPC/POPS bilayers exhibit phase separation in POPC- and POPS-enriched domains as a function of Ca2+ concentration. Annexin A1 interacts with POPC/POPS bilayers by forming irreversibly bound protein domains with monolayer thickness on POPS-enriched nanodomains, while the attachment of proteins to the POPC-enriched regions is fully reversible. A thorough kinetic analysis of the process reveals that both, the binding constant of annexin A1 at …

Customer benefits of demand-side management in the Nordic electricity market

2016

The increasing share of renewable energy sources is likely to lead to price effects in Nordic electricity market, resulting especially in increased volatility of spot and imbalance prices. The greater price volatility and amount of required balancing power increase the need for Demand-Side Management (DSM) in the electricity market and may as well increase the financial benefits of DSM participants. In this research I study the DSM in electricity mar-ket and evaluate how large the financial benefits of DSM participants could be. Monte Carlo simulation method is used to simulate imbalance prices with different volatilities for Finland and Sweden. The results show that increasing volatility m…

Robust design of a sheet stamping process: approaches to control the inner process variability

2011

The robustness investigation has become a crucial issue in the design of the sheet metal forming operations. The uncontrollable effects of some noise variables heavily influence the final process results, often evolving up to the failure of the process design. Therefore, tools able to handle such variability are worth developing with the aim to minimize the scattering of the investigated process performances despite of the process design. Moreover, the stamping process operations are usually characterized by objectives with conflicting behaviors and a set of compromise solutions, referred as Pareto front, is finally obtained instead of a global optimum. Therefore, the question becomes more …

Evolutionary dynamics of imatinib-treated leukemic cells by stochastic approach

2008

The evolutionary dynamics of a system of cancerous cells in a model of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is investigated by a statistical approach. Cancer progression is explored by applying a Monte Carlo method to simulate the stochastic behavior of cell reproduction and death in a population of blood cells which can experience genetic mutations. In CML front line therapy is represented by the tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib which strongly affects the reproduction of leukemic cells only. In this work, we analyze the effects of a targeted therapy on the evolutionary dynamics of normal, first-mutant and cancerous cell populations. Several scenarios of the evolutionary dynamics of imatinib-tr…

Improvement of neutron sensitivity for lithium formate ESR dosimeters: A Monte Carlo analysis

2023

This work presents the computational analysis of the sensitivity improvements that could be achieved in lithium formate monohydrate (LFM) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) dosemeters exposed to neutron beams. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed on LFM pellets exposed to neutron beams with different energy spectra at various depths inside a water phantom. Various computations were carried out by considering different enrichments of 6Li inside the LFM matrix as well as addition of different amounts of gadolinium oxide inside the pellet blend. The energy released per unit mass was calculated with the aim of redicting the increase in dose achievable by the addition of sensitizers in…
