Ion-ion correlation and charge reversal at titrating solid interfaces

2009

Confronting grand canonical titration Monte Carlo simulations (MC) with recently published titration and charge reversal (CR) experiments on silica surfaces by Dove et al. and van der Heyden it et al, we show that ion-ion correlations quantitatively explain why divalent counterions strongly promote surface charge which, in turn, eventually causes a charge reversal (CR). Titration and CR results from simulations and experiments are in excellent agreement without any fitting parameters. This is the first unambiguous evidence that ion-ion correlations are instrumental in the creation of highly charged surfaces and responsible for their CR. Finally, we show that charge correlations result in "a…

Superfluid density and quasi-long-range order in the one-dimensional disordered Bose–Hubbard model

2015

We study the equilibrium properties of the one-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model by means of a gauge-adaptive tree tensor network variational method suitable for systems with periodic boundary conditions. We compute the superfluid stiffness and superfluid correlations close to the superfluid to glass transition line, obtaining accurate locations of the critical points. By studying the statistics of the exponent of the power-law decay of the correlation, we determine the boundary between the superfluid region and the Bose glass phase in the regime of strong disorder and in the weakly interacting region, not explored numerically before. In the former case our simulations are in agreem…

Monte Carlo investigation of electron spin relaxation in GaAs crystals during low-field transport

2011

A great emerging interest within the condensed matter physics is the use of electron spin in semiconductor-based spintronic devices to perform both logic operations, communication and storage. In order to make spintronics a feasible technology, sufficiently long spin lifetimes and the possibility to manipulate, control and detect the spin polarization are required. The loss of spin polarization before, during and after the necessary operations is a crucial problem into spin device design; thus, a full understanding of the role played by the lattice temperature, the doping density and the amplitude of the applied electric field on the electron spin dynamics in semiconductors is essential for…

Ideal and physical barrier problems for non-linear systems driven by normal and Poissonian white noise via path integral method

2016

Abstract In this paper, the probability density evolution of Markov processes is analyzed for a class of barrier problems specified in terms of certain boundary conditions. The standard case of computing the probability density of the response is associated with natural boundary conditions, and the first passage problem is associated with absorbing boundaries. In contrast, herein we consider the more general case of partially reflecting boundaries and the effect of these boundaries on the probability density of the response. In fact, both standard cases can be considered special cases of the general problem. We provide solutions by means of the path integral method for half- and single-degr…

Independence between developmental stability and canalization in the skull of the house mouse.

2000

The relationship between the two components of developmental homeostasis, that is canalization and developmental stability (DS), is currently debated. To appraise this relationship, the levels and morphological patterns of interindividual variation and fluctuating asymmetry were assessed using a geometric morphometric approach applied to the skulls of laboratory samples of the house mouse. These three samples correspond to two random-bred strains of the two European subspecies of the house mouse and their F1 hybrids. The inter- and intraindividual variation levels were found to be smaller in the hybrid group compared to the parental ones, suggesting a common heterotic effect on skull canali…

Experimental Study of the Multipactor Effect in a Partially Dielectric-Loaded Rectangular Waveguide

2019

This letter presents the experimental study of the multipactor threshold in a partially dielectric-loaded rectangular waveguide, whose results validate a multipactor model recently developed by the authors, which includes the charge distribution appearing on the dielectric surface during the multipactor discharge. First, the variation of the multipactor RF voltage threshold has been theoretically analyzed in different waveguide configurations: in an empty waveguide, and also in the cases of a one-sided and two-sided dielectric-loaded waveguides. To reach this aim, an in-house Monte Carlo simulation tool has been developed. The Secondary Electron Yield (SEY) of the metallic and dielectric ma…

On the performance of the Chow-Lin procedure for quarterly interpolation of annual data: Some Monte-Carlo analysis

2003

Most of the countries of the OECD offer quarterly estimates of their national growth or of their Gross National Product. Official Statistical Agencies in western countries have to deal with the problem of estimating Quarterly National Accounts series congruently with Annual National Accounts. In Spain, the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica uses the Chow-Lin disaggregation method, which is based on information provided by a group of high-frequency related variables, to estimate the quarterly components of National Accounts from annual components. In this paper, we analyse the relative quality of the estimates obtained through the Chow-Lin procedure, under different sets of hypotheses.

Subcutaneous Veins Depth Estimation Method Using Monte Carlo Simulations

2015

International audience; Subcutaneous veins localization is basic and important step for any intravenous medication administration. Due to different physiological characteristics, mainly darker skin tone, scars or dehydrated condition of patients, medical staff face difficulty in veins localization. Through near infrared imaging technology the veins can be visualized due to high contrast between veins and skin tissue in this modality. Information on the depth of veins is equally important for proper catheterization or venipuncture procedures. Patients have different veins depth due to the different amount of fat present in the subcutaneous layer. The depth of veins from the skin surface cann…

Energy Efficiency Evaluation of Cellular Networks Based on Spatial Distributions of Traffic Load and Power Consumption

2013

Energy efficiency has gained its significance when service providers' operational costs burden with the rapidly growing data traffic demand in cellular networks. In this paper, we propose an energy efficiency model for Poisson-Voronoi tessellation (PVT) cellular networks considering spatial distributions of traffic load and power consumption. The spatial distributions of traffic load and power consumption are derived for a typical PVT cell, and can be directly extended to the whole PVT cellular network based on the Palm theory. Furthermore, the energy efficiency of PVT cellular networks is evaluated by taking into account traffic load characteristics, wireless channel effects and interferen…
